Savatage have started to use guitarist and sound engineer Paul O'Neill as a producer on the previous record, and ever since they became inseparable, moving on towards much more ambitious, bombastic, neoclassical, progressive sound already on this timeless opus [1989] - sure thing the move was intentional, they did not want to be considered just another heavy metal band anymore, but regardless of that this versatile record is over impressive even if they drop certain amount of metal and authentic spirit of heaviness on certain ballads, involving classical music elements into the picture, yet keeping their trademark addictive element to maintain at a very high expressive level; recent digipak edition comes with a remastered sound, liner notes by vocalist Jon Oliva in the booklet, and two acoustic bonuses tracked in 2010
