regardless of previous history-altering releases, for his fourth studio full-length [1991] Chuck Schuldiner collects a new brilliant line-up of guitarist Paul Masvidal and drummer Sean Reinert [both from Cynic] along the virtuoso Steve DiGiorgio [Sadus] on bass, altogether massively moving towards a complex, sophisticated, intricate kind of death metal, certainly expected from such a gathering of exceptional musicians; first met with mixed reactions, mostly due to step away from ferocity of previous material, this album was at least a decade ahead of its time, now considered an ultimate, timeless classic, where each song is a statement of its own, and where philosophy gets a guise; recent twentieth anniversary marking double disc re-issue comes with a remixed and remastered sound, additional Kiss God of Thunder cover, no less than twenty unreleased instrumental and demo versions of album songs on second disk, part of them yet featuring Bill Andrews and Terry Butler, and booklet featuring loads of vintage photos plus liner notes by Paul Masvidal and Jim Morris
