much like the overcast and murky weather that Seattle is known for, Alice In Chains music is dour, plumbing the darker side of life that is cluttered with dashed hopes and inner turmoil - an outstanding self-titled third longplay [1995] continues along the gloomy path, peppered by nihilistic lyrics and guitarist Jerry Cantrell's weighty playing, causing the songs to achieve a startling, staggering, palpable impact, where snake-charming like Heaven Beside You is juxtaposed to nerve-itching Grind; imagery of drug addiction transformed into prophetic reality floats through several tracks, and the darkened hues coloring the sound make it a perfect rainy day record, the last featuring the late Layne Staley, leaving an indelible mark and cementing their name in history of alternative music forever; recent limited European gatefold sleeve double highlighter yellow vinyl edition with pro-printed inner sleeves and authentic layout marks thirtieth anniversary of this exceptional recording
