Und hier die erste "richtige" Langspielplatte der litauischen Einmann-Formation LUCTUS. Der Litaue knallt dem geneigten Hörer auf "Jauciant Pabaiga Arti" eine ordentliche Ladung Black Metal im Stile der alten Schule um die Ohren. Wer sich zu den Fans des Thrash-beeinflussten Black Metal der frühen Neunziger zählt, darf jetzt aufpassen; der Rest bekommt hier nichts geboten, was er nicht schon mal woanders gehört hätte.
Hier und da gibt es Gitarrenleads zu belauschen, die sich in die Richtung von SKYFORGERs Folk-Anleihen drängen, ansonsten wären da noch CARPATHIAN FOREST und Vergleichbares zu nennen. LUCTUS, im Großen und Ganzen von Kommander L. betrieben, gehen dabei etwas schneller zu Werke als besagte Norweger, die Führung der Melodien deutet auch mehr in die Richtung des klassischen Black Metal als in Black'n'Roll-Gefilde und nicht zuletzt wird ein guter Teil des Grooves kompromisslosen Blastbeats geopfert.
Das Repertoire von LUCTUS ist darüber hinaus recht schnell erschöpft. Die Stücke besitzen untereinander nur wenig Wiedererkennungswert, obwohl Kommander L. das Vorhandene vergleichsweise abwechslungsreich arrangiert hat, die melodischen Leads gut verteilt sind und die Dynamik zwischen den eingestreuten langsameren Teilen und dem obligatorischen Geholze gelungen ausgewogen geworden ist. Das kann aber nicht darüber hinwegtäuschen, dass abgesehen von Intro und Abschluss die Lieder beinahe (untereinander) austauschbar, mindestens aber ohne eigenen Charakter daherkommen. Daran ist zum Großteil schuld, dass LUCTUS nur gut reproduzieren, abgesehen davon Eigenes aber nicht vorhanden ist. Das führt im vorliegenden Falle, wie so oft, zu einer Platte, die von vorneherein nur für Genrefans interessant ist, weil abgesehen vom Abspulen bekannter Stilmittel schlicht keine Überstücke dabei sind. Die Freude über eine besonders erhebende Leadmelodie oder eine gelunge Midtempopassage stellt sich dann und wann ein, währt aber nie länger als bis zum nächsten Abschnitt, sodass unterm Strich nichts steht, was dem Album eigen wäre. Besagte Genrefreunde können mit dem Scheibchen aber durchaus glücklich werden. Außer Frage steht nämlich, dass der Herr weiß, wie Musik dieses Schlags zu klingen hat. Mindestens den eigenen Ansprüchen dürfte er hiermit voll und ganz gerecht geworden sein. [6 / 10]

Quando mi vedo recapitare un disco prodotto dalla Ledo Takas, al novanta su cento so gia cosa devo aspettarmi: dell'ottimo black metal proveniente dai paesi baltici, intriso della storia e cultura di quelle terre lontane per me cosi ricche di fascino. E' cosi anche per la one man band chiamata Luctus, basata su tematiche prevalentemente legate alla guerra, vista come fonte di purificazione e progresso. Il nome del gruppo, scritto in latino, non deve farvi pensare semplicemente a un mezzo per conferire solennita alla proposta. Il mastermind Kommander L. risiede infatti da anni a Roma e si muove con disinvoltura all'interno dell'affollata scena della Capitale, pur senza rinunciare al legame con le proprie origini.
"Jauciant Pabaiga Arti" (vi risparmio la tracklist, in grado di mettere quasi a dura prova anche il sistema di codifica Unicode) ci propone un black vecchio stile, violento, grezzo, ancora legato a ritmiche thrash come piace da sempre in Scandinavia. I tempi spesso sostenuti, marziali, non fanno si che si debba rinunciare sempre e comunque alla melodia, che compare a sprazzi e riesce sempre a convincere. Basti sentire la terza traccia, dove un insistente motivo dal sapore epico accompagna in maniera fluente il maelstrom sonoro condotto da Kommander L. e dal session drummer Kingas.
Guardando il lato tecnico ci troviamo davanti a un'ottima interpretazione sotto tutti i punti di vista: se il songwriting risulta cosi ficcante e anche merito dell'ottima prestazione del duo. Da segnalare la varieta delle chitarre, impegnate anche in lancinanti assoli o brevi intermezzi acustici. Forse un piccolo appunto si potrebbe muovere sulle vocals, un po' troppo canoniche e classiche. Il vero difetto della musica dei Luctus sta nell'originalita, nella puzza di gia sentito che non fa venire voglia di riascoltare tante volte questo dischetto. E' sicuramente l'aspetto su cui bisognera concentrare tutti gli sforzi in futuro, perche per il resto le basi sono gia solide e affermate. [6,5 / 10]

Admittedly, the high score for this album is partly owing to the titles and lyrics being Lithuanian. Were they in English, and hence comprehensible, to this writer the album’s grade would likely be lower. Nationalism, jingoism and similar ignorance are anathema to the spirit of heavy metal and, it is a good guess that, Luctus has plenty of it. In fact, the biography points to the “patriotic” lyrics. Having said that, here are two reasons why Jauciant Pabaiga Arti (‘feeling the end is near’) deserves praise. Firstly, past the intro and outro and predicated on how in this sub-genre the words are rarely intelligible, the album skips the whole Lithuanian folk instrument and melody trend. It is hardly an exclusively Lithuanian problem, but every wanna-be nation’s bands seems to wallow in inserting local folklore into heavy metal. In other words, these Lithuanian/Maldavian/Israeli/Finnish/Romanian/huckledydakeldy poseurs insist on inserting a square peg into a round hole. Luctus skips that whole nonsense musically. Secondly, the music is tight, extreme, genuinely powerful and crushing in its own right. With hoarse and deadly vocals built-in, Luctus is a mixture of Impiety and Impaled Nazarene with Kreator’s most extreme lead guitars thrown in for good measure. A nod should also go to the band’s bass guitar sound. Your average Pantera/Dimmu Borgir fan-girl will die listening to this. Great stuff!
The package is well designed and probably full of Lithuanian war imagery and other things one can ignore, the music is fierce and any local village melodies disguised in the distortive power and the vocals are hysterical and extreme to boot. Etwas mehr als ein Jahr nach der eigentlichen Veröffentlichung erreicht uns via Postsendung aus Litauen das Debüt-Album von LUCTUS. Im Falle von „Jauciant Pabaiga Arti“ handelt es sich knapp noch um den aktuellen Longplayer des Solo-Projektes von Kommander L., doch der Nachfolger „Anti All” steht der myspace-Seite des Künstlers zufolge unmittelbar vor seiner Fertigstellung. Das Label Ledo Takas ordnet das Schaffen seines Acts als „Violent Thrashing Black Metal“ ein und diese Sound-Skizze trifft es gut. Mit angezogenem Tempo, kratziger Schrammel-Attitüde, morbider Atmosphäre und heiser gekeiften Vocals geht es durch reduzierte, effektive Stücke, die extremer Underground-Metal im besten Verständnis sind und nicht mehr – aber auch nicht weniger – sein wollen. Grob verortet geht es durch einen Mix zwischen Dark Funeral und Carpathian Forest. Von Vorteil erweist es sich, dass LUCTUS mit einer vergleichsweise klaren, differenzierten Produktion und einer rigorosen Einstellung antreten, was beileibe keine Selbstverständlichkeit ist. Die Mischung aus traditionsbewusstem Old School und in engen Grenzen moderner gehaltenen Momenten überzeugt ebenso. „Jauciant Pabaiga Arti“ wird angesichts seiner Grundhaltung und des gewählten Genres unerwartet abwechslungsreich voran getrieben, wobei die in der litauischen Landessprache belassenen Lyrics einen gewissen Exoten-Bonus mit sich bringen. Nous connaissions déja Luctus par son split CD avec Argharus baptisé  "Sonitus Caeli Ardentis" qui nous avait laissé une bonne impression. Ce groupe discret en Occident existe tout de meme depuis 2002, date de sa premiere démo. Mais Ledo Takas soutient sans faille sa scene extreme UG nationale, en y faisant le tri. Qu’allait donc donner ce premier album du groupe? Luctus me rappelle immanquablement ses compatriotes de Impaled Nazarene. Ses riffs ultra rapides, courts et répétitifs, ses accélérations mortelles ont été brevetées par le label de leur prédécesseur sous le nom de «nuclear metal»; car on sent bien cette touche punk, folle, qui se dégage de ses structures étalées et de ces gueulantes criardes. Mais que faire d’une copie des glorieux Finnois cités plus haut? Que nenni, pas de pale copie ici. Imaginons plutot un I.N. version mélancolique et mélodique: apres une intro qui rappelle le sample de «Cogito Ergo Sum» de I.N. (justement, quel hasard!) beaucoup de riffs, quoique tres rapides, sonnent plus profonds, avec des mélodies qui se calent a merveille sur les rythmiques endiablées. D’autres, toujours bien inspirés, sont plus posés et aerent la musique. La voix est assez polyvalente, avec un cri black honnete assez humain, collant bien a la nostalgie des titres. Les textes sont entierement disponibles…. En finnois! Ce respect des racines me plait, mais dur de comprendre les themes traités, dommage. C’est l’artwork qui va nous donner un indice sur le concept du groupe, illustrant probablement les mythes guerriers locaux. De toute facon, ces 11 titres passent tres bien, c’est l’essentiel. Car la production est tres bonne et rend des guitares bien incisives. Finissons avec l’artwork, tres soigné lui aussi: un beau digipack cartonné. Buy ! [10 / 10 - album of the month]

Nach unzähligen Demos und einer Vielzahl klanglicher Präsenz auf Split-CD’s, wurde der litauische Zorn nun entfesselt. Erstaunlich gut produziert peitschen neun Hassboldien, plus Intro sowie Outro, aus den Lautsprechern. Der dunklen Klangwand werden gekonnt treibende Melodiebögen und thrashige Gitarrensalven unterbreitet. Genaue Parallelen sucht man vergebens, auch wenn Ähnlichkeiten mit Impaled Nazarene oder Carpathian Forest zu ihren härtesten Zeiten nicht zu verleugnen sind.
Roh und dreckig, aber doch strukturiert vermögen die Stücke "Lapkricio Speigas" und "Akimirka pries Mirti" Liebhaber von thashigem Schwarzstahl mitzureissen. Noch schneller und chaotischer verkörpern "Jauciant Pabaiga Arti" und "Zalcio Zvilgsnis" akustisch die Aggression der Litauischen Einmann-Formation. Ohne Atempause wird das Tempo erhöht, Riff für Riff wird dem Zorn freien Lauf gelassen. Bevor das teils monotone Gebolze jedoch beginnt langweilig zu werden, sorgt das stampfende "Tikroves Iliuzija" für die dringend notwendige Abwechslung. In gewohnter Manier und ohne Rücksicht auf Verluste bahnen sich die weiteren Stücke ihren Weg. Wieder rasend schnell ist "Eilinio Mirtis". Eine raue Gitarrenwand, gepaart mit einer tragischen Melodie, sorgt für Weltuntergangsstimmung. Ein Midtempo Part bringt erneut die sonst kaum vorhandene Dynamik in das Stück und zeigt, was Luctus in Punkto Songwriting wirklich zu bieten hat. Genial!
Nach 40 Minuten klingt die rasende Offenbarung mittels relativ langweiligem Outro wieder aus. "Jauciant Pabaiga Arti" hat erstaunliche Ähnlichkeiten mit einem Sommergewitter, welches plötzlich aufkommt, mit voller Wucht alles niedermacht und genau so schnell auch wieder verschwindet. Was übrig bleibt, ist ein Bild der Verwüstung, welches gewaltigen Eindruck hinterlassen hat. Was sich nahezu perfekt anhört, ist in der Praxis "nur" überdurchschnittlich gut. Gut sind vor allem die Ansätze, die Ehrlichkeit, welche dieses Album ausstrahlt und der absolut passende Gesang, welcher in litauischer Landessprache zum Besten gegeben wird. "Jauciant Pabaiga Arti"- ein gelungenes Debütalbum und Leckerbissen für all jede, welchen der moderne und melodiöse Trend zuwider ist. Für alle Anderen bleibt die eintönige Hasstirade schlichtweg nur Durchschnitt. [9 / 13]

"Feeling The End Is Near" - so lautet die Übersetzung des Titels vom aktuellen Longplayer von Luctus, welche damit auf Ledo Takas ihr erstes Vollzeitalbum auf den Markt werfen.
Erste Aufmerksamkeit konnte man schon mit dem Album "Sonitus Caeli Ardentis" erreichen, das seinerzeit als Split-Veröffentlichung mit den Burschen von Argharus erschien. Schon damals zelebrierte man barbarischen Thrash/Black, der aufgrund seiner Heftigkeit überzeugen konnte.
"Jaučiant Pabaigą Arti" dümpelt in etwa in ähnlichen Gewässern, wobei sämtliche Titel in der Heimatsprache vorgetragen werden. Auffallend ist dabei die teils gute Gitarrenarbeit, werden doch einige Songs mit gelungenen Soli aufgewertet. Für diese zeigt sich Kommander L. selbst verantwortlich. Unterstützt wird jener von einem gewissen Kingas, der hier die Felle verdrischt.
Aber auch bei Luctus ist die Zeit nicht stehen geblieben. Im Vergleich zur starken "Sonitus Caeli Ardentis" Scheibe, ist das hier gebotene Material leider schwächer. Irgendwie ist da die Aggression geschwunden und die Songs haben spürbar an Duchschlagskraft verloren. Woran das liegt, vermag ich nicht zu sagen, Fakt ist, dass sich gelegentlich leichte Ermüdungserscheinungen einstellen und wirklich hängen bleibt leider auch nichts. Zwar gibt es mit "Paskutinį Kartą" ein starkes Kaliber und auch birgt der Gesang gewisse Reize, umwerfen tun mich die beiden Burschen mit diesem Werk jedoch keinesfalls.
Luctus wird mit diesem unspektakulären Album kaum aus der Masse des thrashigen Schwarzstahls herausstechen, fehlen doch einfach herausragende Songs, die variabel aus den Boxen donnern und für Begeisterung sorgen. Schade. Wollen wir hoffen, dass Luctus in Zukunft wieder das Brett fahren, womit man in der Vergangenheit ordentlich Staub aufwirbelte. [6 / 10]

Da ich schon die Split Cd mit ARGHARUS besprochen habe, lag es auf der Hand, dass ich das erste, komplette Album der Litauer wieder auf meinem Schreibtisch bekomme. Mir hat der Vorgänger gut gefallen und auch beit den neuen 11 Songs wandelt Kommander L auf dem gleichen musikalischen Kriegspfad weiter. Nach dem Intro gehen LUCTUS wieder in die Vollen und legen wie gewohnt brutal und zügig los. Die Band hat allerdings das hohe Tempo der Split etwas gedrosselt. Das lässt noch mehr Platz für extrem powervolle Midtempo Parts, die wie ein Panzer über einen hinwegrollen. Die klingen wirklich klasse wie beim zweiten Lied. Eingeleitet wird dies meist durch stimmungsvolle Gitarrenarbeit, die stets bemüht ist sehr heavy rüberzukommen. Mich erinnert die Band mit ihrem Old School Black Thrash öfters an ganz alte Skyforger, was durchaus als Kompliment zu verstehen ist. Session-Musiker Kingas macht einen guten Job hinter der Schießbude und auch das Phoenix Studio hat beim Sound wieder einmal hervorragende Arbeit geleistet. Was soll ich noch groß sagen – für mich haben LUCTUS diesmal klar das Rennen vor DISSIMULATION  gemacht. Da stört es auch kaum, dass der Titelsong und das zehnte Lied, „Eilinio Mirtis“,  fast gleich beginnen. Als zusätzlichen Kaufreiz muss man noch die Aufmachung der CD hervorheben. Textlich geht es in dem sehr stimmungsvollen Booklet des Digipaks um Krieg und Endzeitstimmung.  Von meiner Seite aus sollte man dem Debüt der Band eine Chance geben. Das sollte sich doch für einige lohnen.

This is one bone crushing release of black/thrash metal that totally blew me away. God the guitar sound and riffs had my neck working overtime in a matter of seconds. The drummer smashes and smashes his drums into oblivion as he pounds out the sounds.
The vocals are godly as they are sung in a non generic black metal way and it sounds awesome and sings with lots of emotion and feeling sort of cross between Cronos from Venom meeting Tom Warrior (old) Celtic Frost. Production is perfect and this is easily a must have and a fantastic release and mix of black and thrash metal and just oozes that old school sound that I crave. Buy or fry.

Lithuanian Black Thrash of the highest quality is vomited into your ears with relentless ease here, although never trying to be too clever. It must be the Eastern European time lapse that creates this unique take on the Thrash theme as these lands seem years behind every one else [Behemoth and Vader, being some of the rare exceptions] This is guitar riff heaven, a place for those frets to splinter off the neck and impale all who are listening. The production affords a thick guitar sound not dissimilar to the Dark Funeral Blackened attack. The whole concept derives from Kommander L, also in Black crossover band, Fuck Off and Die!. It’s a pretty caustic ride through that Thrashing deathly level of music and one relatively lacking any world domination attributes. The music is generally melodic, accessible and well constructed, although never reaching the heights of orgasmic Metal Heaven. This album is a conceptual work. The author covers on subjects of how this world would look like just few minutes before its very end, and musically it pretty well covers the subject. So, if you favour crunchy thrashing black metal with a punch and a smouldering old school spirit, then look no further. If you are bored senseless with this Thrashing re-awakening go and get the latest Behemoth mcd.

Black/Thrash auf den Punkt gebracht. Erstklassiger brutaler Black Metal, der mal fetzig rockt, mal rockig zerfetzt.
Uärgh! Das gefällt. Musik, die einen unwillkürlich Grunzgeräusche ausstoßen lässt. Dies ist weniger Folge eines Energieüberschusses oder eines ausgeklügelten Publikumseinbezugs, sondern vielmehr die logische Ergänzung der Musik selbst. Eine Reaktion so natürlich und unvermeidlich wie das Ausschütten von Glückshormonen beim Anblick kondensierter Wassertropfen auf einer ungeöffneten Bierflasche oder dem -völlig-rationalen Drang, das Riffing auf Black Sabbath's 'A National Acrobat' mal schick zum Essen auszuführen, nach Hause zu begleiten und dann noch auf einen Kaffee mit raufzukommen. Gutturale Liedakzentuierung ist hier logische Verlängerung der Musik, und sobald diese mal im Raum herumwütet, so verlässt die primitive Lautfolge ganz automatisch die Lungen, formt sich eigenständig durch die Stimmlippen, resoniert unaufhaltsam im Mundraum und explodiert in ihr natürliches Habitat.
"Jauciant Pabaiga Arti" (in etwa: "das Ende nahen fühlen") ist rassiger Blackened Thrash. Punktum. Ausnahmlos in der litauischen Sprache eingeprügelt lässt dieses Album kaum Wünsche offen. Wer seinen Black Metal gern im Ansatz rockig und mit fiesen Thrashriffs zu sich nimmt und/oder wer seinen Thrash mit bösartig verrußtem Gekreische und stark beeinflusst von anderen Black Metal Stileisblüten hat, es bleibt sich praktisch gleich. Dieses Album sollten beiden Parteien und jegliche Graustufen dazwischen freudig willkommen heißen. Die Produktion ist top und wasserdicht und reflektiert an keiner Stelle einen möglichen Wunsch nach einer oldschooligeren, rohen Oberfläche. Vollkommen unnötig, denn dieses Ziel wird trotz des relativ klaren Sounds allein durch die Brutalität und warm-lebhaften Frostigkeit der Musik selbst erreicht.
Die Riffs sind einerseits von einer schneidenden, erbarmungslosen mid-tempo-Gestalt, die sich bei Black/Thrash-Verfechtern wie Bestial Mockery, Gospel Of The Horns oder Hellish Crossfire oft finden lässt, streunen andererseits aber auch weg vom chaotisch-verrohtem Bierdosengenozid jener Bands hinüber zu allgemein schnelleren Takten bis ganz in rein black-ige Tremolo-Zonen. Weiters gibt es zwischen den bestialisch-kontrollierten Soundattacken gut eingesetzte Verschnaufpausen in Form kurzer rein akustischer Zwischenstücke. Insofern ist LUCTUS wohl im Kern eine Black Metal Band, die sich gerne auf greifbareres, einprägsam pointiertes Riffing beruft um ihre Musik von atmosphärischen kontinuierlichen Gitarrentexturen hin zu einem etwas offener testikulären Gedresche zu verschieben, welches komplette Primitivität gekonnt umschifft und gleichzeitig live das Meer der Follikel geradlinig zum wogen bringt. In bester Carpathian Forest- oder (späterer) Immortal-Manier erweist der Black Metal hier dem puren, abstrakten Rock soviel Ehren wie er es sich nur leisten kann ohne seine eigenen Prinzipien und musikalische Identität dabei in den Gulli zu kicken.
'Mors Omnia Solvit', "der Tod löst alle Probleme", ein mechanisch-martialisch klingendes Intro mit den beinahe obligaten gekrächzten lateinischen Proklamationen wirft einen von seinen ruhigen, aber Unheil verheißenden Gestaden ohne konkreten Übergang brutal in eben erwähntes Unheil; namentlich dem recht klassisch schwarzmetallisch beginnenden Titelsong 'Jauciant pabaiga arti'. Es wird mit Ziel und System geblastet, geknüppelt und geshreddert bis schließlich zur Halbzeit die Bremsen greifen und nach Einsetzen eines gedrosselten Riffs das erste von vielen weiteren "Uärgh!"s den Kampf gegen Haarausfall im Genitalbereich ansagt. Wie auch im weiteren Verlauf des Albums wechselt das Lied zwischen diesen sturmartigen Black Metal-Einschüben zu thrashigen Bangern und auch manchmal leicht doomigen, schweren Akkorden. Die Stimme von Mastermind Luctus selbst brilliert in dieser wechselhaften Umgebung mühelos. Aggressives Gegröhle, bösartiges Keifen, hasserfüllte Schreie und quasi-klare Gesangsleistung, je nachdem welcher Typ dem Soundwall im vordergründigen Hintergrund gerade dienlich erscheint, er wird passend integriert.
Kritikpunkte gibt es nicht wirklich, denn die Band und Mastermind Luctus verstehen ihr Handwerk bestens und wissen, wie solch ein facettenreicher Hybrid aus Black und Thrash richtig umzusetzen ist. Der Ablauf der Lieder ist in Sachen Tempoveränderung, Texturen und allgemein Riffeinsatz gut getimed und vermag es immer wieder genau richtig platziert in die Bauchgegend zu schlagen, besonders dann, wenn man gerade glaubt es würde eintönig werden. Ein klare Empfehlung für Fans von -na, wer errät's?- thrashigem Black Metal/Blackened Thrash Metal und praktisch extremeren Spielarten allgemein. Both thumbs up. [8,5 / 10]

The Apocalypse, Lithuanian-style.
Though this is a concept album that looks at "how the world would look just a few minutes before the end", and one explicitly "not about the Apocalypse but rather an explosive ball of thoughts on what would survive in the Apocalypse's face" (!), given that the lyrics all appear to be in Lithuanian, for most listeners it will be a bit academic. Fortunately, Jauciant Pabaiga Arti translates its lyrical theme to the music itself, which is predominantly fast-paced, urgent and foreboding black metal with a clear thrash influence. Despite the aggression and 'black thrash' approach to songwriting (simple, snappy riffs, some well-placed 'Urgh!'s), the songs are infused with an epic edge thanks to the leads and some occasional atmospheric breaks that keep the momentum up nicely. Eastern Europe has made a strong step forward over the last years. With interesting and original sounding bands popping out from every corner. Luctus is a one piece project from Kommander L. which we now may add to the list. The mix between black and thrash metal presented here is from a good quality and sounds damn fine. Nice riffs, riffs and again riffs, recognizable choruses, good instrumentation and for this style more than o.k. production. Highlight for me is the song: "Paskutini Karta" which contributes all these elements and has some war samples in it that really complete the song. The title of this first full-length album from this Lithuanian band translates itself in: "Feeling The End Is Near". The songs all share the same subject. They all cover how this world will look like just few minutes before its very end. A few minutes before the apocalypse. The singing in their native language is something that fits this kind of music and makes them differ from their other foreign colleagues. Not much more to say here. Fans of Aura Noir, Destroyer 666 must give this quality album a chance. [79 / 100]

Debiutancki pelny album dowodzonej przez Kommandera L. formacji LUCTUS przekazuje luzne mysli, ktore wedlug tworcy moglyby powstac tuz przed koncem swiata u wielu z nas. Moge jedynie zawierzyc na slowo wydawcy, ze jest to interesujacy tekstowo koncept-album, gdyz teksty sa wylacznie w jezyku litewskim. Dzieki temu calosc mieni sie przeroznymi barwami i mamy tu jadowite wokale na tle siarczystych riffow, nieliczne prawie epickie i batalistyczne fragmenty, w jakims tam stopniu zainfekowana folkiem melodyke, estetyke starenkiego thrash czy nawet heavy metalu polaczona z bezkompromisowym black metalem i oldskulowym duchem lat 80-ych. Formula niby nie tak swieza i rzadka na obecnej tak zwanej scenie metalowej, jednak tu sprawdza sie znakomicie, choc mozna doczepic sie do paru szczegolow w rodzaju braku angielskich tlumaczen tekstow. Sami jednak widzicie, ze nie tyczy sie to praktycznie w ogole samej muzyki. "Jaučiant Pabaiga Arti" to jedno z najciekawszych dokonan litewskiej sceny metalowej kilku ostatnich lat. PS. Quello che ammiro dei Luctus e la loro purezza. I Luctus non amano contaminare la propria musica: si tratta di un black metal feroce e diretto, che ti prende alla gola senza troppi fronzoli, furioso ed aggressivo. Siamo lontani dal depressivo e dal lo-fi tipicamente norvegese, riferendosi piu che altro allo stile chitarristico e thrashy di matrice svedese, sempre e comunque rimanendo nel solco della tradizione. Ma nonostante la loro scoperta mancanza di originalita, i Luctus sono un gruppo puro, convinto di quello che fa, che incarna perfettamente lo spirito nichilista e distruttore del genere, tra l'altro senza nemmeno ripetere la stessa canzone ad ogni pie sospinto, con un forte tocco di Carpathian Forest e Celtic Frost nei momenti piu groovy. I classici assalti black metal sono sapientemente fusi con le radici thrash e sinanco crust del genere, e la one-man band lituana (oggi trasferitasi in Italia, a quanto pare) sa perfettamente differenziare i propri brani, al punto che i tre quarti d'ora di durata di questo album (il loro primo vero e proprio full-length, tra l'altro) non pesano per niente, e scorrono via come una benefica sorsata d'acqua fresca. Una vera gioia incandescente per le orecchie. [7,5 / 10]

Luctus is a vage acquaintance from a few years ago, when I reviewed their split album with Argharus. What I wrote then, and what I hear now, are pretty much similar. In fact, I could just be lazy and copy/paste... nah, just kidding, that wouldn't be fair, either.
Luctus is still a one-man band, run by Kommander L. (and again, he recorded this album with the help of a session drummer). Credit to the promosheet, too: it's not the usual rambling about how great the music is, but it mostly deals with the album's lyrical concept, and the philosophy behind it. Interesting stuff, but a bit too heavy for me to ponder at this time of day.
Musically, of course, things are a bit clearer. Luctus continues in the same vein, i.e. "violent thrashing black metal". A description that's straightforward and pretty much to the point - just like the album. The relentless skinbeating and grinding, all-in-one-breath riffs leave little to the imagination, but they do manage to agitate; I've already caught myself multiple times nodding my head.
There's no peculiarity about this album that would make Luctus stand out in your black metal collection... but there's nothing wrong with it, either. "Jauciant Pabaiga Arti" is a fairly generic take on a tried and tested formula, and it's so plain that it works like a charm.

Il primo a scrivere dei Luctus sulle pagine di Shapeless Zine, e stato il mio collega BRN. Proprio lui ha recensito il penultimo lavoro di questo progetto lituano, quello split con gli Argharus intitolato "Sonitus Caeli Ardentis", pubblicato dalla Ledo Takas Records nel 2007.
"Jaučiant Pabaigą Arti" e il primo full-length targato Luctus, e rappresenta il coronamento di una carriera iniziata nel 2001, e vissuta tra Kaunas e Roma. Infatti Kommander L., il polistrumentista che sta dietro a questo progetto musicale, si e trasferito giovanissimo con la famiglia nella capitale italiana, dove ha vissuto per molti anni. Credo pero che attualmente sia tornato in Lituania, tanto che "Jaučiant Pabaigą Arti" e stato registrato allo studio Phoenix di Gints Lundbergs, e non piu in studi di registrazione italiani.
Nel corso degli anni, Luctus ha pubblicato svariati lavori. Nel 2002 ha esordito con il demo "My Sorrow in the Lifeless Landscapes", seguito l'anno successivo da "The Dawn Ov The Eclipsed Desperation" e "One Hour Ov Mourn...". Nel 2004 e stato il turno del MCD "Ad Arma!", all'interno del quale l'artista ha coverizzato un brano dei conterranei Obtest. Nel 2006, la Bylec-Tum ha pubblicato una raccolta dei migliori brani dei Luctus, intitolata "Warlike Hate And Grief".
Dal 2007, Luctus e passato sotto contratto con l'etichetta lituana Ledo Takas Records, delle cui pubblicazioni ho scritto in precedenza.
Da questi brevi cenni discografici, e facile notare come Kommander L. non sia stato con le mani in mano. Anzi, la discreta mole di lavori mette in mostra il carattere testardo dell'artista, a fianco del quale si sono alternati parecchi musicisti. Tra l'altro, vale la pena notare come sia sempre rimasto legato alla sua terra d'origine, nonostante il lungo periodo passato a Roma. L'utilizzo della sua lingua madre, i continui echi di patriottismo lituano, il fatto stesso di essersi legato alla Ledo Takas, dimostrano quanto siano importanti certe tematiche per Kommander L..
Per la realizzazione di "Jaučiant Pabaigą Arti", titolo che dovrebbe significare "Sentendo La Fine Vicina", Kommander L. si e avvalso dell'aiuto del batterista Gytis Kingas (gia attivo con Angis e Xess).
La copertina del CD, dai colori rugginosi, macchiasti, in un continua confusione di rossi e grigi, e abbastanza anonima. Discorso diverso per le sedici facciate del libretto, realizzate come se fossero vecchi fogli di quaderno. A fianco dei testi, ahime in lituano e quindi per me incomprensibili, si trovano molte immagini di soldati, di filo spinato, di eliche, ed anche varie macchie di sangue.
Da quanto ho potuto leggere nel foglietto di presentazione relativo al CD, Kommander L. ha voluto analizzare, nei suoi testi, le reazioni dell'umanita qualora fosse consapevole che la fine del mondo e ormai alle porte. Il tutto mescolato con forti echi del patriottismo molto personale dell'artista.
Kommander L., nella realizzazione di questo album, si e occupato delle parti vocali, della chitarra e del basso.
Nei 44 minuti dell'album, si susseguono undici tracce dall'alto valore artistico, legate fra di loro da svariati effetti sonori. Che "Jaučiant Pabaigą Arti" sia un concept, lo si capisce sin dal primo ascolto. Cio nonostante, le canzoni funzionano benissimo anche ascoltate singolarmente. Questo mi fa supporre che, molto probabilmente, il concept relativo ai testi sia nato successivamente alla composizione delle singole tracce. E, stando a quanto dichiarato dalla Ledo Takas, le undici tracce dell'album sono state selezionate su ventidue disponibili. Di conseguenza, la selezione operata da Kommander L. si e rivelata severissima. Ma, a parer mio, tanta severita ha pagato. Infatti, questo album e davvero bello! Gia nello split con gli Argharus, Luctus aveva messo in mostra la sua abilita. In questo frangente, il potenziale artistico del progetto appare in tutto il suo splendore. Certo, forse nel corso di undici tracce viene a mancare un po' quel senso di aggressione e di immediatezza, che ha reso cosi irresistibili le sette canzoni presenti nello split. Bisogna pero riconoscere a Kommander L. un talento compositivo agile e divertente, capace di prendere a piene mani dal black metal piu tradizionale, di donare alla sua musica un sincero spirito eroico e battagliero, senza paura di strizzare l'occhio al black/thrash o al pagan. Insomma, anno dopo anno Luctus aggiunge dei tasselli al proprio curriculum musicale, evolvendosi e mutando, pur mantenendo un suono relativamente personale e stuzzicante.
Pur essendo in pratica un progetto solista, Luctus suona come se fosse un gruppo fatto e finito. Sin dalla title-track, che apre l'album dopo una breve introduzione, proseguendo attraverso episodi dal carattere diverso, ma dal valore simile (la lenta e funerea "Tikroves Iliuzija", ma anche "Paskutinį Kartą", "Eilinio Mirtis", "G.Ž.R" e cosi via), Kommander L. da vita a tutta una serie di quadri eroici ed aggressivi, e sembra portarci su campi di battaglia irrigati da sangue, potenziato dall'eroismo dei soldati deceduti. Le varie melodie recano impressa su di esse, una malinconia palpabile, che non se ne va. La violenza esecutiva di Luctus va dritta al sodo, colpisce l'ascoltatore con una rabbia negativa, e lascia il segno. In tre quarti d'ora circa di violenza sonora, Luctus conferma il suo talento, la sua voglia di fare ed anche un potenziale che potra svilupparsi in maniera interessantissima in futuro. Infatti, ogni tanto la musica di Luctus suona derivativa, ridimensionando in parte le intuizioni geniali che, qualche volta, illuminano le sue composizioni. E' chiaro comunque che Luctus non e un nome come tanti. Crescera, ne sono sicuro. Crescera esponenzialmente, portando lustro a quella scena lituana che, negli ultimi anni, si sta mettendo sempre piu in evidenza. [7,5 / 10]

Practicamente dos anos han pasado desde el ultimo trabajo de esta formacion lituana, un compartido con sus coterraneos Argharus de titulo “Sonitus Caeli Ardentis” en el que mostraban buena parte de su potencial. Kommander L., apodo bajo el cual conocemos al unico integrante y alma de Luctus, junto con Kingas tras los parches como musico de sesion, nos ofrece una obra conceptual basada en un final apocaliptico para la humanidad, editado en CD DigiPack lujosamente adornado por dibujos de militares y milicianos, reflejando la tematica de “Jaučiant Pabaigą Arti” o traducido al ingles, “Feeling The End Is Near”.
En cuanto al plano musical, si tuviste ocasion de escuchar “Sonitus Caeli Ardentis”, en esta ocasion no te llevaras excesivas sorpresas salvo una mayor madurez en las composiciones y un trabajo en general mucho mas pretencioso que seguro hara las delicias de todo aquel que disfrute de cualquier genero extremo fuertemente influenciado por el mas clasico y agresivo Thrash Metal. La etiqueta que encontramos sobre la portada nos viene a llamar la atencion sobre el genero que calzan, un trabajo de Black Metal “thrasheado”, aunque desde mi punto de vista el sonido de “Jaučiant Pabaigą Arti” resulta mas cercano al Death Metal o, ya puestos a refinar, a un Death Thrash aplastante y a su vez ultra violento que, en cierta medida y segun el oido y diferentes opiniones, podria estar cercano al mencionado Black Metal. No vamos a encontrar demasiadas novedades compositivas en los 11 cortes salvo en el plano mas melodico por el cual Luctus lleva un sello personal, un sello que podriamos llamar autoctono y con el cual puede venirnos a la cabeza los sonidos mas paganos de sus compatriotas Obtest. Con un poco mas de variedad en cuanto a samples belicos, algun pasaje acustico y pequenas aportaciones corales, Luctus termina de presentarnos un album tanto clasico como ligeramente novedoso en su espontanea melodia. La unica nota negativa podriamos encontrarla en la linealidad del album, con unos temas homogeneos de los cuales solo una mitad sobresalen del resto aunque no desmerezca el trabajo en su totalidad.
Poco mas que anadir, tralla incesante y melodia con sentimiento. No se puede pedir mucho mas. [8 / 10]

Lithuanian blackthrasher Luctus' seventh release is the band's debut full length work. The split album 'Sonitus Caeli Ardentis' (2007) with their countrymen Argharus showed the power that the one-man band Luctus carry, even though its machiney soundscape was not for my liking. So, my expectations were high, and what happened?
In today's metal scene, it is not easy to sound characteristic. Luctus cannot be called as "inventive", but with the vehement alloy of black metal, thrash metal and Lithuanian pagan stylings Luctus carves its own niche. "Terminator" style intro made me think, that "is it machiney again?", but 'Mors Omnia Solvit' proved my fear wrong, thanks to Flesh'n'blood drummer Kingas. Luctus are packed with hellish firepower! Vortex-like black metal, often in truly punky way, together with biting thrash metal is sporadically refined more down-to-earth with pagan metal tendency, and slower groove parts really kick the testicles area. No modern bullshit, that's what Luctus are all about, bringing the fiery balls of steel back to blackthrashing. At times it all gets a bit forseeable and repetitive, but the high level of vitality compensates quite a lot.
Soundwise this is congenial with sharp yet rusty guitars, organic drums and convincingly performed vocals, which are simply fucking aggressive! All but one Latin song are sung, as well as the lyrics printed, in Lithuanian, which proves to be a bit of an obstacle. Surely, it sounds good, but the deeper analysis can't be done by me (been waiting for English translations from Kommander L. for some weeks now...). It is said to be a concept album about various subjects (war, patriotism, material values etc.) of how the world would look like just a few minutes before its end. The cover artwork is like a diary, and even though the drawings are a bit na?ve, it is good enough work.
If blackthrash with some heathen constituents rouses your appetite, then Luctus' debut album is one to check out. The band's development since the previous work has been prompt yet still quite steep.
More than I expected for, actually, so mission accomplished. [7 / 10]

"Nicht ganz zielsicher."
Das ich das einmal sagen würde, hätte ich so bald eigentlich nicht gedacht. Jetzt ist es soweit. Das einzige, was ich auf „Jaučiant pabaigą arti“ verstehen kann, sowohl akustisch als auch ungefähr vom Wortsinn her, ist das Intro „Mors omnia solvit“.
Denn dieses ist in Latein verfasst und nicht, wie der gesamte Rest des Albums, auf Litauisch. Dies ist indes schon der größte Unterschied, der zwischen LUCTUS und einer unüberschaubaren Anzahl skandinavischer Schwarzheimerkapellen greifbar wird. Das seit 2001 aktive Duo aus dem Baltikum, dessen Musik mit dem von der Plattenfirma Ledo Takas recht treffend gewählten Siegel „Violent Thrashing Black Metal“ ziemlich gut charakterisiert ist, bezieht seine musikalischen Einflüsse nämlich ziemlich deutlich von Truppen wie Dark Funeral, Nifelheim und Carpathian Forest. Das muss nicht schlecht sein, und LUCTUS verstehen ihr rasendes, klapperndes und schepperndes Handwerk recht gut. Nach dem bereits erwähnten Intro fräsen sie sich vornehmlich mit Hochgeschwindigkeit und klirrenden Saiten durch ihr Konzeptalbum über das Ende der Welt, kreischen sich eins und vergessen auch die kultigen „UUH“-Laute nicht, die man einfach lieben muss, wenn man Hellhammer und Venom nicht für Salatsoßen hält. Dabei stellt sich relativ schnell heraus, dass trotz jedenfalls vorhandener Fähigkeiten an den Instrumenten auch bei LUCTUS folgender Leitsatz gilt: Stumpf ist Trumpf.
Vieles auf „Jaučiant pabaigą arti“ rauscht ziemlich glatt am Hörer vorbei, gleich einer grimmigen aber leicht schielenden Wildsau, die fies grunzend in die nächste Hecke kracht, statt ihr Gegenüber auf die Hauer zu nehmen. Vieles, aber nicht alles: Mit „G.Ž.R.“, „Tikrovės iliuzija“ und „Eilinio mirtis“ haben LUCTUS ein paar richtig schöne Rotze-Black-Metal-Hymnen und mit dem Rausschmeißer „Žingsniai į begalybę“ ein ziemlich verstörendes, kriechendes Stück Klangmaterial geschaffen. Das macht die Scheibe nicht zum Pflichtkauf, lässt aber auf mehr hoffen. [4,5 / 7]

Nach einigen Demos und Splits können LUCTUS mit dem einzigen Bandmitglied namens Luctus ihre erste Full Lenght „Jauciant Pabaiga Arti“ vorweisen. Nach einem eher unspektakulären Intro legt er mit dem Opener und Titeltrack schon mal ganz gut Kohle ins Feuer, räudiger Black Metal mit einigen Thrash-Einflüssen gibt hier den Ton an. Im zweiten Track wird dies nur umso deutlicher, besonders während den Blastparts werden ein paar wirklich geile Leads aufgefahren. Gegen Ende des Songs gibt es sogar cleane Gitarren zu hören, welche jedoch schon bald wieder durch pures Gebolze zerhackt werden, die den Song, begleitet durch ein weiteres cooles Lead, elegant ins Ziel bringen. So und nicht anders schreibt man geile Songs! Das nun doch ziemlich hohe Niveau kann sogar über die folgenden Stücke gehalten werden, was ich in dieser Stilrichtung wohl zuletzt bei den Herren von Luror gehört habe. Das Tempo wird geschickt zwischen mittel und sehr schnell gewechselt, was jedem einzelnen Track eine eigenständige Note verleiht und die Existenz einer Skiptaste weitgehend unnötig macht. Luctus ist böse, aggressiv, hat ein Gespür für bangtaugliche, eingängige Songs und sollte deswegen von Fans genannter Adjektive unbedingt angecheckt werden! [8 / 10]

Ein etwas seltsamer Titel, den Sänger/Gitarrist/Bassist Kommander L für sein Ein-Mann-Projekt aus Litauen bzw. Italien gewählt hat, der aber mehr Sinn ergibt, wenn man bedenkt, dass alle Texte und auch der Albumtitel ist in der Heimatsprache des Kommander geschrieben sind. Der Titel selbst heißt auf Englisch soviel wie Feeling The End Is Near. Wer sich für die gesungenen Worte näher interessiert, die sich laut Beipackzettel um Krieg und Patriotismus drehen, und des Litauischen nicht mächtig ist, muss sich direkt an den Meister selber wenden, um eine englische Übersetzung zu bekommen.
Ansonsten bekommt der geneigte Fan das zu hören, was ich mir eigentlich von der neuen Dissimulation erwartet hatte. Spritzigen, angethrashten und finsteren Black Metal. Glaubt man dem Review zur Split mit Argharus, waren die dort vertretenen Luctus-Songs nicht gerade das Gelbe vom Ei, hier jedoch muss ich sagen, dass der Gute fast auf ganzer Länge überzeugen kann. Die Songs bewegen sich meist im gemäßigten Uptempo, richtige schwarzmetallische High-Speed-Raserei bekommt man nicht zu hören. Stattdessen geht Luctus hier auch mal gern vom Gas und streut meist zum richtigen Zeit einen langsameren oft heftig groovenden Teil ein, der die Songs wohltuend auflockert. Zudem erweisen sich die insgesamt elf Tracks als recht eingängig, wobei sich vor allem Song Nummer fünf "G.Z.R." als echter Hammer erweist. Zum Schluss steht dann noch ein düsterer langsamer Song mit tiefem bedrohlichem Gesang, der das Album hervorragend abrundet. Bei den Arrangements der Songs legt Luctus ebenfalls viel Wert auf Abwechslung und kann somit auch in diesem Bereich punkten.
Leider schleichen sich hier und da einige Schwächen ein, denn manchmal sind sich die Songs dann doch zu ähnlich. Außerdem wäre es hier und da wünschenswert, wenn man etwas zügiger auf den Punkt kommen würde. Da mir aber der Rest verdammt gut reinläuft und die Aufmachung im hübschen Digi-Pack zudem noch sehr ansprechend ist, gibt's von mir fünf fette Punkte für dieses Debüt. [5 / 6]

Let me get something out in the open first: I may have given a wrong impression of the reviewer's life in one of my earlier reviews, this one, to be precise. With great shame I cite the horrendous words I uttered that unfaithful day: 'the life of a reviewer is glorious and glamorous and full of bedding hot chicks and whatnot.' The truth is, I am one ugly motherfucker, I live in my mother's basement and I have such a severe case of acne that my vision is partly veiled. I hang my head in shame.
And all these damned promos don't make life easier. You know, the glorious and glamorous part only applies when you receive good stuff. But everybody knows that 90% of the metal bands out there are boring, bland, unoriginal, obsolete or mediocre, so guess what? Yeah...
With Jaučiant Pabaigą Arti the Slovanian Luctus is here to join the ranks of the mediocre, skilled yet bland as they are. They're a good example of the average modern metal band: masters of their instrument, knowledgeable concerning their musical heritage and absolutely boring songwriters. They've studied the first wave of Black metal well, they seem to enjoy a good dose of eighties Thrash and they are enthusiastic about what they do. But I'm not. And without wanting to sound arrogant, but to me, that's the only thing that matters.
So no, I don't think Luctus will be the next big thing. They're simply too average and inconspicuous for that. Even if you will enjoy listening to this once, why waste your time on it when you can lisen to Absu, or Carpathian Forest, or Bathory, or...
Hurrah, another mandatory review done. Now the rest of the slaughter cattle, please! [6 / 10]

Krieg und Black Metal passt so gut zusammen, wie Salz und Pfeffer, Bud Spencer und Terence Hill, Schnaps und Nutten, und und und... - diese Liste lässt sich ewig weiterführen. Fakt ist dennoch, dass früher wie heute Bands aus dem schwarzmetallischen Bereich die zerstörerische Wut des Krieges besingen. Die litauische und mittlerweile nach Rom übergesiedelte Ein-Mann-Armee LUCTUS bildet da keine Ausnahme. Seit 2001 bringt der Solokünstler mit Hilfe von Session-Musikern thrashigen Black Metal unters Volk. Dabei gibt er nach diversen Demos und EPs mit dem Album "Jauciant Pabaiga Arti " sein Debüt.
Bei einer Spielzeit von einer knappen dreiviertel Stunde prügelt LUCTUS sich hier durch elf Tracks und bleibt ständig auf höherem Tempo. Dabei steht das fiese Black-Metal-Geschrammel, bei dem man auch hin und wieder etwas Melodie von der Sologitarre zu Gehör bekommt, in Verbindung mit Blasts und schnellen Off- und Onbeats im Vordergrund, wobei man die ruhigeren Stellen mit cleaner Gitarre nicht außen vor lassen sollte. Zuweilen erinnern die Songs ein bisschen an jüngere IMPALED NAZARENE, wobei man hin und wieder aber auch an DESTRÖYER 666 denken muss. Defintiv also aufs Maul-Mucke für Freunde deftiger und schneller Musik.
Freunde von Abwechslung und Originalität werden dies Album aber sicherlich nicht zu ihren Favoriten zählen dürfen. Das liegt einmal daran, dass sich die Songs streckenweise selbst wiederholen und sich im Großen und Ganzen zu sehr ähneln. Zudem hat man des öfteren Momente, in denen einem der Gedanke kommt "Hm, hab ich schonmal irgendwo gehört". Beim ersten Hören machen die Songs schon Laune, aber nachdem man 3-4 Lieder durch hat kennt man die Platte dann schon.
Fazit: Durchaus netter, aber kaum abwechslungsreicher Black/Thrash Metal bietet LUCTUS auf "Jauciant Pabaiga Arti ". Wer nach dem Lesen dieser Rezi dennoch Lust bekommen hat, sich die Platte anzuschaffen, kann dies ruhig tun, für meine Verhältnisse fehlt die jedoch in keinem CD-Schrank. [5,5 / 10]

The promo sheet for this album mentions that this will appeal to fans of early Dark Funeral, Carpathian Forest and Skyforger, among others. I can't say for Skyforger, but the mention of the other two is not far off the mark. On this album, Luctus mix the speedy, blastbeat, destructive style of Dark Funeral (and of course a few other Swedish bands catering to a similar style) with the raw, dirty, Black'n'Roll-ish style of Carpathian Forest, all of this held together with a thrashy vibe. Listening to this album is like going through a sonic war zone; you have a barrage of Dark Funeral-esque speedfest with a more melodic (yet dark and often grim), slower style trying to get through. Add to this some horror/suspense-like moments such as on the first and last tracks, which are more sound effects/atmospheric in style but sounding pretty sick and dark. You do get a couple of very calm moments a couple of places on the album, but these are few and far between and, frankly, listening several times to this metallic onslaught I found I missed them most of the time - that's how short such passages are. The vocals, just like the music, mix a more BM-ish screech style with a raspier, more intelligible style often found in Black/Thrash. Of course, the lyrics being in Lithuanian, that didn't help me much - but it does help vary things a little. Pretty good stuff overall, and rich enough in variety that each listens unearths new stuff not heard on previous listens - so lots of replay value, assuming this is your kind of Black Metal to begin with. Ca faisait longtemps qu'on avait plus eu de nouvelle de Luctus. Apres un split CD en 2007 avec Argharus, "Sonitus Caeli Ardentis" qui nous avait bien plu, l'homme semblait avoir disparu de la circulation. Il est aujourd'hui de retour avec un son premier album "Jauciant Pabaiga Arti" sur le label lithuanien Ledo Takas Records. Le one man band est en grande forme et il tient a nous le faire savoir…
Des les premieres notes de "Mors Omnia Solvit", on est tout de suite happé par l'univers black/thrash de Luctus qui semble reprendre la ou "Sonitus Caeli Ardentis" s'était arreté.
Evoluant dans la meme trame qu'un Impaled Nazarene, Luctus va cependant appuyer ses terribles riffs par des mélodies bien foutues et des atmospheres plus mélancoliques ("GZR", "Paskutini Karta", "Akimirka Pries Mirti"…). Et a la différence de son ainé finlandais, Luctus ne va pas partir dans un bourrinage intensif a chaque étage mais plutot dérouler des compositions aux rythmes changeants sur lesquelles le Kommander L. va moduler ses lignes de chant en oscillant entre le black et le death ("Lapkricio Speigas", "Tarp Dulkiu Ir Netrukus Dulkese").
L'homme prouve par la meme qu'il est un musicien averti et qu'il sait ménager ses effets pour nous servir un black thrash superbement ficelé.
En ce qui concerne les lyrics, je dois avouer que je suis un peu largué car j'ai fait anglais en premiere langue et non pas lithuanien. De ce fait, je ne saurais trop m'étendre sur les textes a teneurs philosophiques (si, si!) traitant des combats épiques des héros lithuaniens qui se dégagent de ce "Jauciant Pabaiga Arti".
Cependant, le chant lithuanien amene a l'ensemble une atmosphere tres personnelle et particuliere qui attire l'oreille ("Eilinio Mirtis", "Tikroves Iliuzija").
Certes, ce disque ne se renouvelle pas trop au fil des morceaux et peut sembler parfois linéaires dans ses approches artistiques, mais force est de constater que Luctus maitrise son sujet de bout en bout.
Le fait que l'homme orchestre joue de tous les instruments et s'occupent aussi du chant donne une parfaite homogénéité a l'ensemble meme si une certaine froideur s'en dégage. En effet, l'apport d'autres musiciens avec leurs propres personnalités aurait peut-etre donné une autre dimension a "Jauciant Pabaiga Arti".
Quoiqu'il en soir Luctus a eu la bonne idée d'agencer intelligemment ses morceaux de facon a leur donner pas mal de relief et beaucoup d'impact. Le résultat n'en est que plus implacable: Luctus réussi a imposer sa musique dans sa langue maternelle sans que l'auditeur métalleux occidental n'en prenne ombrage. On est bien loin du "métal exotique" que certains labels essayent de nous vendre. Non, Luctus fait du métal extreme… et du bon!
Au final, "Jauciant Pabaiga Arti" permet a Luctus de creuser un peu plus son sillon black/thrash et de concrétiser par cet album tous ses précédents efforts (démos, maxis, split). Le one man band réussi haut la main cet épreuve du feu et se positionne clairement comme l'une des valeur sure de l'écurie Ledo Takas et du métal lithuanien. Reste pour Luctus a traverser ses propres frontieres et envahir l'Europe de l'ouest… [14 / 20]

Igazi ude szinfoltnak szamit a death/thrash elemekkel bovitett black metalban utazo Luctus. No, nem a kepviselt zenei stilus, hanem litvan szarmazasa miatt. Az egyszemelyes formaciot meg 2001-ben alapitotta meg Kommander L., akinek munkajat ket session zenesz, a dobos Kingas es a basszer Justinas segiti.
Ilyen lemezt meg kajakra nem pipaltam, hogy egy arva szo, nem sok, annyit nem ertek abbol, ami a CD-n van. Minden, de minden (!) litvanul van rairva… Legalabbis csak sejthetem, hogy litvanul, mert nem beszelem a nyelvet, de valahogy ez tunik logikusnak.:) Mindenestre marha jol szorakoztam, ahogy probaltam kibogozni a dalcimeket, es hogy melyik dalban, mi az extra, de termeszetesen sokra nem mentem vele. Az uriembernek egyebkent nincsen hivatalos honlapja, csak egy MySpace-es oldala, amely ugyan egeszen korrekt, de azert megsem derul ki belole sok minden magaval a lemezzel kapcsolatban, melynek cimere utalo jelzest viszont talaltam: „erezni a halal kozeledtet”, vagy valami ilyesmi.
Pont a nyelvi akadalyok miatt ezuttal sem a szovegekrol, sem a dalcimekrol nem tudok erdemi informacioval szolgalni, emiatt ezt inkabb melloznem is, de a MySpace-en feltuntettek nehany temakort, melyet Kommander L. eloszeretettel boncolgat, ezek pedig (micsoda meglepetes): haboru, hazaszeretet, poganysag, es napjaink romlasba dolt vilaga. Az egesz lemez 11 dalbol all, mely osszesen majdnem haromnegyed orat tesz ki. Semmi extra, semmi flanc, sehol egy korszakalkoto otlet, de azert szeretjuk. Raadasul ha valaki az anyanyelven „enekel”, az szamomra mindig dicseretes.
Egyik kedvencem a Lapkricio Speigas lett, ami kiserteties szelzugassal kezdodik, es ugyanigy er veget, hidegrazos keretet adva az amugy is hangulatos temaknak, melyek egyebkent is jellemzoek az anyagra.
Mindenkeppen fontosnak tartom megemliteni, hogy ugyan sosem hallottam meg a Jauciant Pabaig Arti-t megjelenteto litvan Ledo Takas kiadorol, de regota nem botlottam bele olyan menedzsmentbe, akik ennyire szep es igenyes peldanyt kuldtek volna promo-kent. Ez elkepesztoen nagy plusz pont, plane azok utan, hogy a nagyobb kiadok egyre pofatlanabbul sporolnak rajtunk. Aki szereti a fentebb emlitett stilust, esetleg erdekli, mit tudhat egy litvan black metal formacio, annak rajta, mert megerdemlik a tamogatast! [7 / 10]

Luctus is a Lithuanian one-man-project by Kommander L., supported by session drummer Kingas: ‘Jaučiant Pabaigą Arti’, which is said to mean “feeling the end is near” is the band’s debut after having released several demos and EP’s, of which I have never heard: that usually is not a good omen when it comes down to albums, but let me not spoil your interest by giving the clue right away. In the beginning it is said to have been more pure black/pagan metal, and throughout the years thrash influences entered the band’s music. Those who read my reviews with interest (apart from my girlfriend) and attention know by now that you do not have to expect something epic, yet be calm: you don’t have to expect some hideous ambient monster in the style which has made Striborg famous at Lords of Metal (or is the right word infamous?).
Black metal with some thrash with a heavy old school atmosphere: sure, a good description, yet the thrash is mostly to be pointed at in the chopping riffs, which sometimes do sound remarkably powerful. So that in itself is cool, yet in all honesty I need to say that something technical like thrash does put some power into it, but often also takes away the dark atmosphere in black metal, and Luctus is no exception to that rule. It is not bad what Kommander L. is doing, yet in all fairness I have to say that “not bad” is also the maximum I can say about the band. This ‘Jaučiant Pabaigą Arti’ is such a typical album of which one track at its time does have its charm, yet an entire album becomes a blur which doesn’t have enough impact to last. Regarding this, I get the same feeling like with many Italian black metal bands: nicely performed, yet without any cold or darkness underneath, and dear people, black metal is supposed to scare the shit out of outside listeners. The music is pretty standard and reminds a little bit of the less folkloristic side of neighboring Skyforger, and also of early Heiden, though these two bands are a lot stronger. The East-European language does however work out fine in the intro and outro, but it is a pity that that grim and dark feeling is not conveyed throughout the regular songs.
Once more, not bad, yet very common. There are a few one-man projects very much worth while, and Luctus is, alas, not one of them. [62 / 100]

2007-aisiais leidybos kompanija Ledo Takas pristatė dviejų lietuviškų komandų LUCTUS ir ARGHARUS bendrą darbą „Sonitus Caeli Ardentis“. Simboliška, tačiau praėjus dviems metams abi grupės pateikia debiutinius studijinius albumus. Apie šiauliečių diską „Pleištas“ jau kalbėjome. Atėjo eilė ir Simono projektui.
„Jaučiant Pabaigą Arti“ oficialiai prekyboje pasirodė vasario 16 dieną. Data, žinoma, pasirinkta neatsitiktinai ir nurodo vieną iš albumo idėjinių pusių. Pastarosios, beje, visada buvo aktualios LUCTUS kūryboje – kova, meilė tėvynei, mirtis. Tad šioje vietoje tradicija tęsiama. Kaip ir muzikoje – dominuoja black ir thrash mišinys. Tiesa, lyginant su minėtuoju splitu, jaučiamas didesnis juodojo metalo kiekis, kas man asmeniškai yra malonu.
Dainų pavadinimai, tekstai puikiai atspindi tai, kas užšifruota trijuose disko pavadinimo žodžiuose. Tačiau emociškai reikėtų pastebėti – nors kūriniai tikrai perteikia nerimą, dramatizmą, tragiškumą, kovą, tačiau aš asmeniškai jokios pabaigos nepajaučiau. Atvirkščiai – tai tik pradžia. Pradžia supratimui ir bendrumui. Debiutinis LUCTUS diskas nustebino labai smarkiai. Pirmųjų perklausų metu buvau sužavėtas albumo vientisumu, energija, melodijomis, kokybe, ir t. t. Drąsiai teigiu – nuo pat 2000-ųjų „Jaučiant Pabaigą Arti“ man asmeniškai yra vienas geriausių lietuviško metalo leidinių.
Nežinau, ką reikėtų kaltinti, jog albumas taip smarkiai užkabino. Na, būna, užtaiko į jautrią gyslą, sužadina kažkokius užmirštus jausmus arba atvirkščiai – atsiranda ryšys su nuolatine būsena. Toks tokį sutiko, kitaip tariant.
Neskaitant intro bei outro kūrinių, kurie tinkamai atlieka savo įžangos bei pabaigos funkcijas, likusios devynios dainos yra viena už kitą geresnės. Negaliu išskirti kurios nors vienos iš jų. Visi kūriniai tikrai puikiai subalansuoti (tinka net ir moterims), puiki struktūra, kaip visada labai patrauklios gitarų partijos. Be to, kiekvienas turi tik sau būdingą, pavadinkim, melodingą pragrojimą ar tai labiau akcentuotą šešiastygių „posmelį“, gal įžangą į priedainį. Dėl to šis albumas man ir tapo toks ypatingas. Tai yra būtent tie akcentai, sustatantys viską į savo vietas, palaikantys harmoniją. Vien dėl šių muzikinių sprendimų, skambesio galėčiau albumą vertinti aukščiausiu balu.
Karinę disko pusę sustiprina įvairūs sirenų kaukimai, kiti specialūs efektai. Kaip visada, LUCTUS muzika pakankamai energinga, dinamiška, tačiau turinti ir labiau melancholiškų, bet vis dar piktų ir agresyvių vietų. Man svarbu, jog muzikos pagrindas yra paremtas gitarų partijomis – jos čia ir yra visa muzikinė esmė. Tačiau reikėtų paminėti, jog puikų darbą atliko ir būgnininkas Kingas. Galbūt mušamieji ir nepasižymi dideliu originalumu ar progresyvumu (ar jo čia išvis reikia?!), bet viskas atlikta preciziškai tiksliai ir skoningai. O ir skambesys puikus – ne be reikalo rašyta pas Gintą Lundbergą.
Žinoma, idealių albumų retai pasitaiko (apie vieną tokių pasakosiu netolimoje ateityje), tačiau „Jaučiant Pabaigą Arti“ yra labai netoli to. Vienintelę strėlytę mestelsiu į „G.Ž.R.“ – kaip kažkas jau buvo pastebėjęs, ne, growlinti himną nėra gražu. Aš suprantu mintį, idėją, bet reikiamo efekto tas neduoda.
Beje, negaliu nepaminėti ir disko apipavidalinimo. Bet čia ta pati pasakėlė – nuostabus darbas. Labai gera idėja viską perteikti kareivio dienoraščio pavidalu, puikus atlikimas, pliusai Augustinui „Vandeniui“ Našlėnui.
Viskas, neturiu prie ko prisikabinti. Net ir ta pyla už „G.Ž.R.“ reikalo negadina. Po disko išleidimo praėjo beveik pusmetis, bet net ir šiandien „Jaučiant Pabaigą Arti“ man kelia tokias pačias emocijas, kaip ir klausantis pirmą kartą. Aš negaliu garantuoti, jog ilgalaikėje perspektyvoje šis albumas išlaikys dabartinę savo vertę, bet šiandien mano susižavėjimas neblėsta. [10 / 10]

LUCTUS, das ist ein Ein-Mann-Projekt aus Litauen, welches bereits mit EPs und Demos auf sich aufmerksam gemacht hat - für mich jedoch stellt "Jaučiant pabaigą arti" den ersten Kontakt dar. Schade eigentlich, denn "Jaučiant pabaigą arti" donnert von Beginn an mächtig drauf los, und überzeugt mit seiner Mischung aus brachialem Black Metal der alten Schule und hier und dort feisten Thrash Metal-Elementen, und lässt sich ganz grob als Mischung aus aktuellen Combos wie Necromessiah (nur nicht ganz so thrashig), alten Dark Funeral, Legion auf ihrem faszinierenden "Bloodaeons"-Demo, Suicidal Winds oder auch Carpathian Forest anpeilen. Dennoch haben LUCTUS ihre ganz eigene Atmosphäre, was nicht selten durch die komplett in litauisch verfassten Songtexte bedingt ist. Instrumental geht auch alles in Ordnung, und sogar das programmierte Schlagzeug klingt sehr organisch und wäre mir, wenn's nicht auf dem Infozettel vermerkt gewesen wäre, auf den ersten Lauscher garnicht aufgefallen.
Überhaupt klingt "Jaučiant pabaigą arti" ziemlich fett, die Produktion kann sich absolut sehen lassen. Anspieltipps wären zum einen der Opener und Titeltrack "Jaučiant pabaigą arti", das gegen Ende alles niederwalzende "G.Ž.R.", das doomig einsteigende "Tikrovės iliuzija" oder das treibende "Tarp dulkių ir netrukus dulkėse" (erinnert mich zu Beginn irgendwie an Impaled Nazarene).
LUCTUS legen viel Wert auf Abwechslung, die Arrangements und Tempowechsel sind durchwegs klasse, und auch wenn man sich bis auf "normale" Blastbeats nicht in den extremen Highspeed-Black Metal hinwagt, sondern lieber auf drückende Versatzstücke setzt, kann ich "Jaučiant pabaigą arti" durchaus jedem Black Metal Fan der älteren Schule empfehlen! I gruppi lituani che suonano black metal sono in gran parte affascinati dal tema della guerra; non fanno eccezione i Luctus, solo project portato avanti ormai da diversi anni dal tuttofare e omonimo Luctus, personaggio originario di Kaunas ma che ora si e trasferito nel nostro paese. Dopo tanti demo ed EP e giunto il momento anche per i nostri, supportati dall'etichetta lituana Ledo Takas Records, di esordire con un full length album. "Jauciant Pabaiga Arti" e un album davvero intrigante e piacevole all'ascolto, e a coloro che amano il black metal irrobustito con metallo thrash di ottima fattura diciamo allora: i Luctus dovrebbero prima o poi entrare nel vostro stereo arrugginito! La pruduzione e ottima, graffiante e tagliente, mette in risalto in maniera spettacolare le mitragliate black/thrash che la band e capace di ripresentare in ogni singolo brano. Come accade per la maggior parte dei gruppi baltici, anche i Luctus lasciano emergere quel caratteristico sound e modo di fare metal estremo tipico di quella regione del nord Europa. Prendete i Loits, Skyforger e gli stessi Luctus ad esempio: tre gruppi baltici che suonano un metal estremo diverso ma dei quali appare chiara la provenienza. Magia dei gruppi dell'Est, magia che in Occidente e andata purtroppo perduta molti anni fa. Alcuni di voi ancora non si saranno abituati ad ascoltare un intero album cantato in una lingua particolare come il lituano, ma questo ovviamente non puo essere una barriera capace di impedirvi di ascoltare un gruppo promettente come i Luctus. Anche stavolta l'industriosa Ledo Takas Records ha colto nel segno. Per la gioia di tutti. [7 / 10]

Luctus is a Lithuanian band that has issued its last album “Jauciant Pabagai Arti” on Ledo Takas Records, having signed bands such as Dissimulation, Loits, Obtest or Blutvial.The digipack set a war landscape: soldiers' shadows and scrawled draft pieces tell about the front, strewed with drops of blood, autumnal trees' skeleton surrounded by barbed wire, bending tombstones etc. Most images consist of very expressive drawings. Let's see what's inside what Ledo Takas Rec. advertise as a “groundshaking violent thrash black metal [with] old school spirit and surgical precision”... no less.
The vocals are quite raw, between low and high-pitched. They're sometimes complemented by other clear voices (Jauciant Pabaga Arti, Zalcio Zvilgsnis, Zingsniai I Begalybe). We appreciate it for it is not too loud compared to instruments (e.g. Akimirka Pries Mirti). The phrasing is really well-done on “G.Z.R.” and truly organically fits the rhythm.
Guitar ensemble plays powerful chords (Jauciant Pabaga Arti), consisting of rather simple short riffs (Lapkricio Speigas), or more complex ones (Akimirka Pries Mirti). Apart from black metal riffing, thrash riffing is very present (Akimirka Pries Mirti, Lapkricio Speigas). The guitar sound is massive, its relative loudness supports an unbelievable intensity (Lapkricio Speigas). It rather dwells upon low frequencies chords, not devoid of harmonic fineries (Akimirka Pries Mirti), clear arpeggios (Paskutini Karta), veiled with mystery (Akimirka Pries Mirti), or others discrete melodic incursions (Tarp Dulkiu Ir Netrukus Dulkese). We note tremolo-picked riffs (f.i. Jauciant Pabaga Arti) or the kind of wild heavy/rock solo (Akimirka Pries Mirti).
Epic but dark tunes are omnipresent (Jauciant Pabaga Arti) and create warlike atmosphere (Jauciant Pabaga Arti, Eilinio Mirtis) filled with heroism (Zalcio Zvilgsnis), a bit of sadness (Eilinio Mirtis) or solemnity (Tikroves Iliuzija). They however are not devoid of anguishing and tortured accents (Zalcio Zvilgsnis), dark melodies not that far from Marduk, contrasting with conquerant tunes within the same track (Akimirka Pries Mirti), vaguely reminding some Dissection-likes epic lead vs. rhythmic guitar construction (Tarp Dulkiu Ir Netrukus Dulkese).
These paradoxical mixes, often within the very same track, are the trademark of Luctus' album. From threatening black metal riffs (Tikroves Iliuzija, Eilinio Mirtis) till more relieved “thrash n' roll” escapades (G.Z.R., Tarp Dulkiu Ir Netrukus Dulkese, Eilinio Mirtis), from clumsy irony to morbid havoc filled with perversion (Paskutini Karta), or from harsh aural assaults till depiction of dramatic landscapes (Paskutini Karta): the tunes and riffing are very contrasted, so that atmospheres are original and convincing enough for the listener to submerge oneself into Luctus world.
The bass is not overtly an important ingredient to this album. When it's percievable, its sound is metallic, a bit ? la Marduk (Jauciant Pabaga Arti). In the same fashion, drums are not put forward: their role is clearly to accompany the rest of the music. We note either black metal blast beats, or a thrashier play (f.i. Akimirka Pries Mirti), with some insistent rolls (Tikroves Iliuzija). The tempo is most of the time steady, with a usual pace, but sometimes slower (Tikroves Iliuzija) turning epic into solemnity.
Excellent tunes although not totally original; coherent titles, although some may resemble others; sometimes very expressive atmospheres carrying a very paradoxical but coherent feelings set; evolving between black metal, thrash, not devoid of rock n' roll accents and death features. Quality of sound is very good, as well as production. All elements are mixed together in a balanced way. It's just a bit sad we don't hear the bass guitar much... Well, but it's like 99.9% of black metal bands...
It's loud, intense, dynamic, short but efficient, powerful, it remains straightforward and sometimes simple, but able to adjust fineries and clever transitions and arrangements.
Maybe the bombastic adverstisement is slightly exaggerated: the music is not that violent, not that groundshaking. Nonetheless, this album is a good surprise and keeps most of its promises... And brings even more!
With Luctus, we face another strike of Ledo Takas Rec. giving just a glimpse about Baltic Black Metal scene vitality! Check it out!

Das litauische Projekt namens Luctus veröffentlicht mit "Jauciant Pabaiga Arti" (oder in der englischen Übersetzung: "Feeling The End Is Near") sein erstes komplettes Werk. Was hat sich gegenüber der zwei Jahre alten Split-CD mit Argharus geändert? Nun, Bandleader Luctus nennt sich nun Kommander L. und mit dem Session-Drummer Kingas gibt es nur noch einen statt zwei Aushilfsmusiker. Zudem hat der Kommander seine Texte – auf der Split noch hauptsächlich in Englisch gehalten – nun komplett in seiner Muttersprache verfasst. Das reicht zwar für ein kleines bisschen Originalität aus, im Gegensatz zu anderen – eher folklastigen – baltischen Bands fällt es allerdings gar nicht so großartig auf, da diese Feinheiten im typischen Black Metal-Gesang oftmals untergehen. Ansonsten war, wenn ich mich recht erinnere, auf der Split namens "Sonitus Caeli Ardentis" noch pure Raserei dominant, während Luctus anno 2009/10 auf eine Art thrashingen Black Metal schwören. Während also etwa das Titellied oder "Akimirka Pries Mirti" als reiner Black Metal der alten Schule durchgehen, ist "Paskutini Karta" schon fast unverfälschter Thrash und mit dem Blackened Thrash – oder wahlweise thrashing Black Metal – auf "Lapkricio Speigas" nähert man sich einer Chaos-Combo wie Deströyer 666 an. Hatte ich auf der Split noch den Vergleich zu alten Emperor gezogen, so gilt für "Jauciant Pabaiga Arti" sicherlich eher Carpathian Forest als Referenz. Leider bieten Luctus nicht allzu viel neues, weshalb sich die Scheibe schnell abnutzt, da helfen auch Tempovariationen wie im treibenden "Tarp Dulkiu Ir Netrukus Dulkese" auf Dauer nicht weiter. Sieben kleine Punkte dürften aber dafür auch nicht gar zu viel sein. [7 / 10]

Ik kreeg deze maand een drietal CDs van het Litouwse label Ledo Takas Records opgestuurd. Deze eenmansband Luctus steekt er met kop en schouders bovenuit. Vette black/thrash/death zoals die pok gemaakt wordt door bands als Necrophobic, Tribulation en Destroyer666. Kommander L. heeft niet alleen bijaa alles zelf ingespeeld, maar kan ook sterke nummers schrivjen. Tel daarbij de lekkere, rauwe maar vette productie en dit werkje kan de concurrentie met Westerse gentegenoten met gemak aan. Nummers als "Mors Omnia Solvit" of het Impaled Nazarene achtige "Akimirka Pries Mirti" hakken er lekker op los. Ik heb geen idee of de CDs van het Ledo Takas label makkelijk verkrijgbar zijn, maar check anders even de website: www.ledotakas.net Luctus is namelijk zeker de moelte waard. [80 / 100]

I’d begin with the fact that the ambitious digipak packaging is already a good point even if I completely have not known this Lithuanian (now residing in Italy) band before. Of course, this is not all since I could also imagine albums with nice packaging and weak music, and vice versa. Let’s see then, what’s the situation like in this case.
The militant pictures in the cover already suggest that we’re in for a dose of war-like concept. On such occasions, names such as Canadian Lust, Revenge or Conqueror come to mind, to name just the biggest ones. Based on this, such concepts and adjectives pop up in the listener’s mind like blood, chaos, relentless brutality etc. However, the situation isn’t exactly like that. LUCTUS is more easily digestible and well-structured than the mentioned bands. I could classify them as Militant Black/Thrash Metal, in which they blend the mentioned styles in a ratio of 60/40%. Thus, there are not that surprising things in the music but what they have is quality stuff for the most part. Anyway, the band is no beginner since they walked the usual path with demos and stuff, and after a split CD this is their debut full-length. The themes are good, even memorable at times. And the material isn’t lacking the necessary energetic performance and dynamism either. The tempos are also varied, and the production is alright too, being not too clinical but clean and powerful. Anyway, according to the info-sheet, the tracks of the record have been selected from more than 20 songs and it can be heard on the stuff that leader Kommander L has done a good job with that. There is also a patriotic feeling at the band present which is also reflected in the Lithuanian-written lyrics but I’m sorry they have not included the English versions since it would have been great to know more about this concept they have on the material. All I know of that is the album deals with the last minutes of the world before the apocalypse, what would be possible and worth preserving etc. Anyway, the lyrics are said to be available at the band’s e-mail address (simonasenator@gmail.com).
Since this genre is also relatively saturated and a lot of things have been played by others before, I’m not saying this album world-redeeming stuff but is, by all means, among the better ones, and I admit its virtues and quality. And those who’re really longing for a battlefield-scented Black/Thrash record to bang the heads while listening to it, invest into this album. [7,5 / 10]

Now this is more like it! Finally some black metal that I can really get into. Luctus is raging Lithuanian black metal with three speeds: fast, faster and fastest.
Jauciant Pabaiga Arti is relentless thrashing black metal, equal parts Blood Fire Death and Vobiscum Satanas. Fast, rhythmic riffs anchor each song and while these riffs are not straight up thrash metal, they give the majority of retro thrash retards a run for their hesher monies. "Akimirka pries Mirti," "Zalcio zvilgsnis," and "Lapkricio Speigas" are ripping burners that play like Avenger (Czech) covering early Kreator. There's just enough melody present to keep this from devolving into second tier thrashing, but neither does the melody become the focus to turn this into yet more Gothenburg-influenced puke. Luctus clearly understand the roots of black metal better than most of their peers, without rehashing or just simply reconstituting the sound of those original pioneers.
Luctus belongs on the list of bands that avoid cliches in their black metal and are all the better for it. The production on JPA is solid-heavy, thick and full. They have ignored  the trends of Darkthrone, Mayhem and (old) Ulver so that we can hear individual guitar riffs and drum beats. And despite a few mid-tempo passages, they don't follow the lead of Drudkh and Peordh and other so-called pagan black metal bands and drone their listeners to near boredom (don't get me wrong, I like Drudkh and a few others in this subgenre, but it's reached a point of ridiculousness, and most of it is extraordinarily boring). These songs are brief and fast, and there are actual songs on this album! If it wasn't for the lyrics being in Lithuanian, some of these are catchy in the same vein as old Sodom, Bulldozer, Sarcofago and Bathory. Luctus has also wisely chosen to leave overt modernity to other bands. While this isn't conspicuously retro, its combination of mid-to-late 80s thrash/first wave black metal and mid-to-late 90s second wave black metal is refreshing in this era of hackneyed throwbacks and punk-lite, "authentic" bullshit (hey Black Anvil, how's it goin'?).
If you like fast, thrashing black metal, there's little chance you won't like Luctus'  Jauciant Pabaiga Arti. They strike a favorable balance between their influences, and that makes this a tasty album, and one of the few blackened thrash or thrashy black metal albums that gets repeat play with me. While this is not a great album, its minuses are minor compared to its pluses. If Luctus continues to develop this sound, the next album might be a great album. [7,5 / 10]

Even though the name LUCTUS seemed familiar to me, I later realized that this is the first time I come across this band (LUCTUS really makes you think that you know a Black Metal band by this name). Anyway, the one thing I got right was the Black Metal one. And it has been a while since I listened to a good BM album...
This band, or to be more precise, solo project, hails from Lithuania, a country that has produced some good Black Metal acts. Kommander L (Luctus), who is the man behind the wheel, began this project in 2001. His first steps were not that successful, since his first amateur demo tape that was recorded with an acoustic guitar did not actually reach the underground metalheads. After 8 years and some more releases, LUCTUS returns with a new album.
"Jauciant Pabaiga Arti" (which means "feeling the end is near") is a thrashing Black Metal album full of nice ideas and chaotic melodies. Luctus has gathered his favourite elements and has tried to mix them creating a violent sound. His patriotic and war themed lyrics are nicely presented through his MARDUK meets LOITS music, though there are several times that someone may lose interest, not due to bad music, but due to a little bit of extra work that could be done here and there. The riffing is really good, combining catchy grooves and relentless outbreaks and the sound is heavy and decent (although a little more heaviness would make LUCTUS sound like a tank).
I had some time to listen to anything by Ledo Takas Records (actually some years), but the label tries to recover some of the lost ground with this nice thrashing Black & Roll (?!) album. Fans of the genre should probably check it out. [3,5 / 5]
