Sympaticka litevska petice, jez se probila mezi celoevropsky zname kapely predevšim tri roky starym „Iš kartos į Kartą“, se v tomto mesici rozhodla navazat jeho nasledovnikem. Sadlave, Baalberith a spol. jej pojmenovali „Gyvybės Medis“ a my, koncovi posluchači, mame moznost byt s nim jiz tri tydny v kontaktu.
Prave deskou „Iš kartos į Kartą“ ukazali Obtest svoji ješte melodičtejši stranku plus fakt, ze hudbu delaji hlavne pro radost a novinka na sveho predchudce primo navazuje. „Gyvybės Medis“ disponuje hojne vyuzivanou tri čtvrte hodinou melodickeho pagan/heavy metalu. Oproti minulemu albu tvorba Obtest snad ješte vice zmelodičtela. Skladby sazi predevšim na jednodušši stavbu a strukturu, dobre zapamatovatelne kytarove linky tvori společne s vokalem a často vyuzivanymi soly hlavni poznavaci znameni „Gyvybės Medis“. Celou dobu pak posluchače provazi klasicky Baalberithuv vokal, charakteristicky predevšim svym hlubšim a mirne chraplavym odstinem.
Nova deska prijemne utika od začatku az do konce, a kdo by čekal od Litevcu nejake novatorske postupy, či moznost hlubšiho proniknuti do jejich tvorby, bude zklaman. Uz po prvnim poslechu je zrejme, ze Obtest se prirozene posouvaji k hitovejšim, primočarejšim a stale vice „heavy“ skladbam. Zminovany fakt, ze „Gyvybės Medis“ je slozeny lidmi, kteri tvori hudbu pro zabavu a vlastni potešeni, je vice nez zrejmy. Hudba pusobi vylozene pozitivne, drivejši black metalove prvky dočista vymizely, a pokud se tu a tam v rychlejšich skladbach nejaky objevi, kytarove solo či celkovy zvuk nahravky jej dokonale potre. Co se tempa tyče, neda se vuči desce komplexne určit, skladby jsou tu rychlejši, pomalejši, pozitivnejši i romantičtejši. Pokud však Obtest v nejakem tempu rozehraji prvni tony, vetšinou v tom samem, či hodne podobnem zazni i ty posledni.
Je marne se zbytečne rozepisovat - co je psano, to je take dano. A? jsou litevšti Obtest mysli „pagan“ stejne, nebo mozna i vice jak pred lety, hudebne jsou chte nechte stale vice „heavy“. A o to prijemnejši je, ze jsou takovi hlavne prirozenym nenucenym vyvojem. „Gyvybės Medis“ je poctiva prace s jejich charakteristickym rukopisem. Nic vice, avšak ani o pi? mene.

Fanaticos del pagan metal estais de enhorabuena. Estoy totalmente convencido que con este entretenidisimo nuevo disco de los veteranos guerreros lituanos OBTEST pasareis unos muy buenos ratos. Como viene siendo habitual en ellos, la edicion de nuevo material se ha alargado bastante (3 anos) desde la salida al mercado de su anterior trabajo "Iš Kartos I Karta". Pero, como tambien viene siendo habitual, la espera ha merecido la pena para ahora escuchar un album tan completo como el que nos ocupa. Despues de tantos anos en la escena (mas de 10) parece que por fin salen de la escena local, en la que son unos heroes, para iniciar la conquista de Europa.
Los 9 temas que componen "Gyvybes Medis" son autenticos himnos quererros en forma de pagan metal con ligeros toques black metaleros, bastantes menos que en su anteriores entregas, lo que hace que sea un disco mas accesible para el publico en general. De hecho estoy convencido de que sera del agrado cualquiera que disfrute del metal epico en cualquiera de sus vertientes. La verdad es que en general el album es mas suave que "Iš Kartos I Karta" o "Auka Seniems Dievams" . Las voces rasgadas al estilo black metalero estan cada vez menos presentes, pasando a tomar mayor protagonismo las entonaciones guerreras con coros al estilo vikingo de fondo. El cambio tambien se aprecia musicalmente hablando. La influencia de heavy metal clasico se hace cada vez mas patente de una forma similar a Children Of Bodom (salvando las distancias) pero algo mas "ochentizado". Ademas los blast-beating son mucho menos frecuentes en favor de galopadas trasheras a toda leche, mucho mas efectivas y mas acordes con la particular forma de tocar de OBTEST.
Como se puede deducir claramente de esta primera aproximacion "Gyvybes Medis", las guitarras han adquirido mucho protagonismo en la musica de OBTEST. A traves de ellas el grupo lleva el peso de las melodias, ya sea en temas mas ritmicos y a medio tiempo como el inicial "Apeigos" o en temas mas veloces como "Sakalo Vaikai". Pero lo mejor de todo es que, a pesar de esta nueva importancia adquirida por el instrumento de las 6 cuerdas, la esencia del sonido de OBTEST sigue intacta y el bloque se mantiene.
Lo cierto es que "Gyvybes Medis" me ha traido muy buenos recuerdos, principalmente porque con este nuevo giro de tuerca que han dado a su sonido se acercan un poco mas a mis vanagloriados MITHOTYN. Esos dobles bombos y ritmos de dobles guitarras como en "Sakalo Vaikai" (como me recuerda ese inicio al  maravilloso "On Misty Pathways" de los dioses suecos!!) o los inolvidables estribillos dignos de cualquier cantar vikingo como en "Tai Ne Pabaiga".
Otro de los grandes puntos a favor de esta grabacion es sensacion de naturalidad y sentimiento que poseen todos los temas. El feeling que tiene "Gyvybes Medis" es el que se supone que el pagan metal debe tener. La sensacion de majestuosidad, de acercamiento con la naturaleza y el sonido "organico" que desprende cada nota. Y todo eso a pesar del impedimento que supone para los foraneos como yo el que canten en su lengua madre y no entienda ni papa de lo que dicen. Para intentar paliar la curiosidad que me invadia acerca de sus letras me adentre en la red en busca de traducciones de las letras. Como no podia se de otra forma, sus textos estan totalmente acordes con su concepto y complementan perfectamente todo lo que su musica transmite. He aqui un pequeno ejemplo perteneciente al tema "Šviesa": "El silencio es ensordecedor, los lobos aullan... todos los sonidos arden a su paso y desean ser libres..."
Pero no todo iban a ser cosas buenas. Para mi gusto de lo que adolece "Gyvybes Medis" es de algo mas de agresividad en algunos momentos puntuales. Como buen black metalero que soy echo en falta alguna que otra salida en velocidad, como por ejemplo en la propia "Tai Ne Pabaiga", donde hay un momento previo al estribillo donde un par de trallazos de doble bombo hubiesen quedado que ni pintados. De todas formas hay que reconocer que, en general, el descenso de velocidad ha supuesto un cambio para mejor y ha dotado a la musica de OBTEST una dimension que antes no poseia.
Sin mas recomendar este album a todo el mundo. Todos aquellos que disfruten de bandas como Ensiferum, Mithotyn, Moonsorrow y similares aqui tienen otra banda mas a la que rendir pleitesia. Solo falta que su compania les haga una buena promocion para que se situen al nivel de los anteriormente mencionados. [8,2 / 10]

The Lithuanian stalwarts of Pagan Metal are back with a new effort, titled "Gyvybes Medis", and while it is not a copy of their previous masterpiece "I Kartos I Karta", they have not strayed far from their patented brand of music. If you compare OBTEST of 2008 with my first ever contact with the Lithuanians 11 years ago (their full length debut "Tukstantmetis"), then the evolution in style becomes more evident, though, but more on that in a moment.
One good sign for how much OBTEST's standing has improved, is the fact that they have moved on from domestic Ledo Takas Records to legendary Osmose Productions (at least outside of their home-country), who definitely have made a very good pick with this quartet, because within the ever-growing Pagan/Folk Metal field the Vilnius-based warriors definitely have managed to carve their very own niche, which this time around has been further embellished by an added scoop of Heavy Metal, which comes through in the riffing and especially the solos and adds even more charm to the powerful and unpolished sound of the band.
Now when saying "unpolished" I do not refer to a muddy production or anything, but this is not high gloss material, this is what they could play out on the battlefield, while the folks around smash each other's heads in, if they're not too busy banging them to the music, that is. One of the trademarks has stayed the same, though, which is Baalberith's characteristic rough, but intelligible and even somewhat melodic voice (to call it singing still would be a bold statement, but it is a far cry from the croaks and yells many other bands serve to this music), which adds to the immediate catchiness of the songs.
While "Vedlys" shows how OBTEST can combine aggressive blastbeats with an epic chorus, "Sviesa" is an absolute favourite of mine and should be a great way of convincing almost anybody of the qualities of this band (if you are inclined to listen to this style, of course), full force ahead, with thundering double-bass, cool melodies and crowned by this great harmony solo (one of the mentioned Heavy Metal influences), which further elevates the song, play this one loud while driving the car and a speeding ticket will be almost a guarantee! Other than the melodies, the dynamics and overall creativity, it is also something intangible that endears OBTEST to me so much, I guess it is this somewhat primordial force that lingers just underneath these mentioned melodies, this battle-like wild atmosphere that lurks beneath and lends this odd kind of authenticity to the songs, even though I have no idea what they are singing about (other than the English translations of the titles themselves, which give a hint), such as "Sakalo Vaikai", where the mental image of a horde of riders sweeping over the plains comes to mind, racing through the villages, the fiery "Gelezinis Vilkas" goes one step further, despite the acoustic guitars at the beginning and end, it is a parforce ride through Pagan Metal that should not leave any fan of the style untouched! And at the end I just have to mention the instrumental “Ikaitai”, which has this absolutely irresistible guitar melody that mesmerized me upon first listen and it still has not let go, great way to finish off this album!
So as mentioned before, OBTEST have stayed true to their sound, but still managed to evolve and keep their music fresh and entertaining. It is good to see that despite the rush of new bands playing this style, the Lithuanians are still maintaining a characteristic sound that sets them apart and marks them as none other than OBTEST and as the quality also is outstanding, how could I not call this an absolute winner, I ask you? Album of the month.
By signing Lithuania’s Obtest Osmose Productions has picked up a winner. Previously on the domestic Ledo Takas Records, Obtest has now signed to a major underground label and would surely benefit from this association, as Osmose will from the group’s accomplished music. What is that? Obtest bridges the gap between melody and Impaled Nazarene. With a sound nestled firmly in punk hardcore and Baltic folklore, the quartet-that-occasionally-turns-into-a-quintet adds some gothic melody atop a barrage of speedy metal to create something particularly its own. The Lithuanian lyrics (although all song titles’ English translations are provided) further set the band apart. It is startling how tight and accomplished this band is. Whether in speedy mode, pounding or melodic Obtest rages with power and ferocity. The song Sviesa is a good example given its pounding sound and simultaneously involved guitar melodies. Amazing. The title track is next and beats the listener to a pulp with its speed, although yet again the song is never lost. The band’s guitar solos clearly are held in reserve and are too short in order to keep the listener wanting more.
Obtest has it all. Although a higher snare drum presence in the mix would have been justified. No one would accuse the band of being weak, while the elaborate compositions, self-reliant style and hard-hitting sound complete the package. Obtest passes all tests. Check it out. [80 / 100]

Die Letten sind schon erstaunlich lange im Geschäft. Seit 1992 halten sie mehr oder weniger unbeirrt an ihrem Pagan Black Metal fest und veröffentlichen regelmäßig Alben, die fast durch die Bank gute Kritiken einfahren. "Is Kartos I Karta" war mein erster Kontakt mit OBTEST und auch ich war seinerzeit von dieser Scheibe ziemlich angetan. Nun ist "Gyvyb?s Medis" schon fast ein Jahr draußen und ich muss sagen, dass ich wieder einmal von den Letten begeistert bin. Stilistisch ist alles beim Alten geblieben, jedoch sind die Songs diesel Mal noch ausgereifter, die Melodien noch einprägsamer und die Riffs schlichtweg noch besser geworden. Baalberith charismatische Stimme passt prima zum knackigen, fast launigen Pagan (Black) Metal und ist fast schon mehr klassischer Metal als Pagan. Dazu tragen nicht zuletzt die Gitarristen Evaldas Babenskas und Enrikas Slavinskis bei, die mit ihrem tadellosen Spiel markante Akzente setzen können. "Gyvyb?s Medis" bietet Pagan Metal vom feinsten und kommt gänzlich ohne schmierigen Pathos oder bierseelige Belanglosigkeiten aus. OBTEST sind zu einer Band herangereift, die international ganz vorne mitmischen kann, wenn sie nur richtig promotet werden würde. Bis dahin wird sie wohl leider weiterhin ein Geheimtipp bleiben. Dabei hätten es die Jungs wirklich verdient, zumindest für eine Weile, ganz vorne mitzumischen. Das Zeug dazu haben sie, ganz ohne Frage! [12 / 15]

Bisher kannte ich aus dem Baltikum nur eine Pagan Metal Band, nämlich SKYFORGER aus Lettland. Nun bin ich mit OBTEST aus Litauen in Kontakt gekommen, die ihren Kollegen hinsichtlich der Qualität des Gebotenen kaum nachstehen. Die Fünf sind seit 1992 aktiv, haben seitdem drei Alben und diverse EP’s veröffentlicht, waren dreimal in Europa auf Tournee unterwegs und haben einige grössere Festivals in Osteuropa absolviert. OBTEST gehen auf "Gyvybes Medis" durchgängig straight zu Werke und verzichten im Gegensatz zu anderen Genrekollegen dabei auf traditionelle Folklore-Instrumente. Der Hymnenfaktor der Songs ist zwar nicht so gross wie z.B. bei SKYFORGER, dafür aber können die Jungs mit ihrer Gitarrenarbeit punkten, die von starken Riffs und vielen Soli geprägt ist. Baalberith pendelt in seinen Vocals zwischen cleanem und tiefem Gesang hin und her, gelegentlich ergänzt um chorale Passagen.
Der Opener „Apeigos“ erzeugt durch mehrere Tempowechsel epische Momente, während Songs wie „Vedlys“ und „Azuolas“ fast durchgängig mit voller Geschwindigkeit laufen. Wie schon oben erwähnt, kommt nahezu kein Lied ohne Gitarrensolo-Einlagen aus. Zum Fade Out vom hymnischen Titeltrack „Gyvybes Medis“ solieren sich Sadlave und Enrikas in High Speed-Gefilde. Bei „Sviesa“ lassen sich vereinzelte Thrash Metal-Elemente ausmachen, bei „Gelezinis Vilkas“ braten die Gitarren sogar phasenweise in Rock’n’Roll-Manier. Die Texte sind komplett in der Landessprache gehalten, mit Ausnahme von „Jkaitai“, denn dieses flotte Instrumental beendet eine überzeugende Scheibe, in die Pagan Metal Fans ruhig mal reinhören sollten. Obtest est de retour. 3 ans apres le tres bon "Is Kartos I Karta", de multiples tournées a travers l’Europe et meme les U.S.A. (en oubliant soigneusement la France) et une signature chez Osmose, déboule chez nous "Gyvybes Medis" alors que le style de nos lituaniens préférés, principalement folk/pagan arrosé de sauce viking connait aujourd’hui un essort considérable en Europe.
Un train de retard Obtest? Tout a t-il déja été dit dans le genre? Diable non. Avouons le tout de suite, ce nouvel album du combo balte est une véritable bombe. "Apeigos" ouvre le bal et nous balance des guitares viking facon Amon Amarth sur fond de double-pédale. Et puis ca déroule: 9 titres tous plus variés les uns que les autres, autant sur le rythme que sur le style. Ainsi un "Sviesa" est un pur bijou au riff thrash avec batterie speedé qui infligera de sérieuses douleurs a vos cervicales.
Et puis parlons du chant (en lituanien) de Baalberith. Il est tout simplement magistral, des couplets parfaitement entonnés avec cette voix rauque unique. Un travail particulier a aussi été fourni sur les harmonies de voies durant les refrains, leur conférant un coté magistral, donnant envie de charger face a une armé de viking, seul sur un poney.
Ce qui surprend en fait chez Obtest c’est cette étonnante faculté a créer des morceaux variés, faisant montre d’une sacrée technicité (tu veux du solo ben t’en auras gamin), tout en étant monstrueusement efficace. Pas besoin de 3 ou 4 écoutes d’adaptation, cet album c’est du plaisir immédiat.
On notera aussi une amélioration conséquente sur le rendu de la production. Le groupe est parti enregistrer en Pologne au Hertz Studio, qui a vu défiler du tres lourd comme Hate ou encore Crionics. L’assurance en somme d’avoir un son béton armé triple épaisseur.

Je chercherai bien un défaut a cet album, le probleme c’est que je n’en vois pas réellement. Obtest a repris la recette de son précédent opus, la bonifiant avec l’expérience (15 ans d’existence déja) pour un rendu absolument monstrueux et un album qui a coup sur va marquer 2008 de ses riffs de folie, de son chant magistral et de sa superbe qualité. Pagan Metal aus Litauen; das sieht man auch nicht alle Tage und es genießt so fast schon Exotenstatus. Der Exot hat auch einen Namen, nennt sich Obtest und bringt dieser Tage mit Gyvybes Medis ein neues Album heraus.
Geboten wird epischer Pagan Metal mit einer starken Affinität zum Power Metal. Die Produktion ist gut ausgefallen, aber der Gesang klingt etwas daneben. Exotisch ist auch die Tatsache, dass Obtest ihre Texte in litauisch verfassen und man daher kein einziges Wort versteht. Doch mit dem Titeltrack haben die Herren eine höchst-melodische Nummer auf Plastik gebannt und einen eingängigen Hit geschrieben. Doch wirklich imposant ist das Material auf der Scheibe nicht wirklich und das Meiste plätschert so vor sich hin.
Obtest haben noch einen sehr weiten Weg bis zur Pagan-Spitze. Mit gerade mal einem Hit auf Scheibe kann man einfach nicht viel reißen und so wird diese Platte in der Masse der Veröffentlichungen einfach untergehen. [2 / 6]

Obtest est un groupe lithuanien qui vient de signer chez Osmose Productions. Je ne connais pas le groupe et pourtant le groupe existe depuis 1995. «Gyvybės Medis» est leur dernier album et le style du groupe est du pagan/heavy metal.
Les morceaux sont entrainants, rapides avec des refrains accrocheurs. Les riffs sont lourds, rapides et accrocheurs. Le chant est en lithuanien et il est quelque peu agressif mais va bien avec le style du groupe meme si je trouve la voix quelque peu monocorde.
Les chansons ont des melodies travaillees avec un bon jeu de guitares et les soli donnes par celles-ci sont plutot reussis notamment dans le morceau instrumental «Ikaitai» qui termine l’album.
Un bon album fait par des musiciens qui maitrisent leurs instruments. On accroche facilement aux melodies car elles sont tres entrainantes. Si le cote pagan est effectivement present, chaque chanson est melodique et puissante a la fois avec un travail important fait par le duo de guitares.
A decouvrir sans restriction parce que franchement Obtest en vaut le coup!!!

Obtest is a Lithuanian group which has just sign with Osmose Productions. I do not know the group and however the group exists since 1995. «Gyvybės Medis» is their last album and the style of the group is pagan/heavy metal.
The tracks are lively, fast with catchy refrains. The riffs are heavy, fast and catchy. The vocals are in Lithuanian language and they are somehow aggressive but go pretty well with the style even if I find them a little monotonous.
The songs have worked melodies with a good guitars playing and the soli given by them are rather well done especially in the instrumental track which ends the album «Ikaitai».
A good album done by musicians who control their instruments. We get catch easily with the melodies because they are lively. If the pagan side is of course present, each song is melodic and powerful at the same time with an important work done by the guitars duo.
To discover without any restriction because frankly Obtest is worth it!!!

La via verso la melodia per gli Obtest e sempre piu spianata. Terzo disco, terza evoluzione verso un sound piu cristallino, decisamente piu folk/pagan come genere in quanto tale. Se gli esordi erano comunque inseriti in un contesto black metal progressivamente dimiunuito, con ‘Gyvybes Medis’ e possibile dire che la dimensione degli Obtest e ormai un power estremizzato e dalle tinte epicissime, che li avvicina al sound di gruppi come Enisferum (‘Sakalo Vaikai’ in particolare), Wintersun o i Mythotin dell’ultimo periodo. Pezzi piuttosto veloci, serrati, concepiti ed eseguiti in maniera corale, intervallati da pregevoli tocchi di acustico e di strumentale. Le tessiture delle chitarre sono sempre molto curate e regalano agli Obtest un’identita propria notevole. Capitolo a parte per la voce, ringhio abbastanza simile a quello di Jari Maenpaa ma allo stesso tempo entita piu distesa e narrante che rende i pezzi piuttosto dinamici. Resta inoltre particolare anche l’uso della lingua madre, trattandosi di lituano, visto che i suoni della lingua slava lasciano un effetto prosodico proprio particolare. Avranno perso pur qualcosa a livello di impatto e di violenza, ma hanno guadagnato molto su chorus e intelaiatura folk delle chitarre, gli Obtest, creando un prodotto nel complesso di grande qualita. ‘Gyvybes Medis’ e in definitiva un lavoro proprio riuscito, per gli Obtest, band in grado di creare del buon pagan/folk senza svendersi alle canzoni da birreria che tanto sembrano funzionare di questi tempi. Insomma, ora avrebbero solo bisogno di un push adeguato per farsi notare in giro per l’Europa. Spero proprio arrivi. [75 / 100]

Nedažnai pasitaiko proga apžvelgti albumą netrukus po jo pristatymo. Kol dar „šilti“ įspūdžiai iš smagaus balandžio 11-osios vakarėlio (apie tai atskirai), susipažinkime ir su jo „kaltininku“.
Man dvigubai malonu šnekėti apie „Gyvybės medį“. Viena, tai ilgai lauktas ir brandintas leidinys, kuris, iš karto reikia pasakyti, yra įspūdingas ir patrauklus daugeliu atžvilgių. Kita vertus, OBTEST, mano manymu, yra savotiški „šaukliai“, kurių karingi akordai jau plačiai nuskambėjo ir pasklido, pranešdami apie mūsiškės pagoniško metalo scenos esmę. Taigi...
Naujasis (tiesa, tik pagal išleidimo datą) OBTEST tvarinys, bent jau mano ausims, yra vienas vientisiausių, labiausiai išbaigtų ir, ko gero, techniškiausias grupės darbas. Na, kaip ir anksčiau, daugelis kūrinių yra panašaus tempo, tačiau jie įvairesni, kiekviename skamba stiprios, gerai įkomponuotos, įsimintinos gitarų soluotės. Geras ir ritmo sekcijos darbas. Jei anksčiau teko girdėti priekaištų grupės vokalinei linijai, su kuo aš irgi iš dalies sutikdavau, dabar, sakyčiau, ši vieta taip pat gerokai progresavo gera linkme.
Gal „Gyvybės medis“, kaip ilgai bręsta gerai išlaikytas vynas, taip ilgai „leido šaknis ir kėlė šakas“ ne veltui? Kai kurie gabalai sukurti dar 2002 m., o kiti – prieš gerus du metus. Apskritai albumas patrauklus ne tik pačios muzikos, bet ir įrašo bei apipavidalinimo kokybe. Tai vienas leidinių (digi-pack formato), kurį tikrai malonu laikyti rankose. Viršelis neperkrautas vaizdais ir spalvomis, viduje puikuojasi labai vykusi OBTEST nuotrauka, lietuviški ir angliški tekstai, kurie vėl leidžia tematikos esmę suvokti ir užsieniečiams. Na, jei ne širdimi, tai bent protu. Ir patikėkit, jau pati įsitikinau, kad vis daugiau kitataučių susižavi mūsų grupės kūryba!
Kadangi albumas, kaip minėjau, toks vientisas ir labai gerai sukomponuotas, būtų tikra pagoniška nuodėmė kalbėti apie atskiras jo kompozicijas. Todėl čia paminėsiu tik asmenines „favorites“. Tai titulinis kūrinys „Sakalo vaikai“, „Ąžuolas“ ir labai malonus ausiai instrumentalas „Įkaitai“. Sunku įvardinti ne tik jų, bet ir čia nepaminėtų kompozicijų privalumus ar trūkumus, nes pirmiesiems tiesiog gali pritrūkti epitetų (čia viskas ausims), o antrųjų asmeniškai nerandu. Trumpi, bet taiklūs dainų pavadinimai irgi yra gerai. Prie ko prikibti? Nebent dėl to, kad albumas ilgokai „klaidžiojo“, kol pagaliau pasirodė dienos šviesoje...
Be abejo, būtina paminėti, kad OBTEST pasiekė savotišką pergalę, siekiant lietuviško metalo sceną plačiau išgarsinti užsienyje. Tai sutartis su prancūzų „Osmose Productions“, kurių ženklu ir pažymėtas „Gyvybės medis“. Buvęs gana ilgas rimtesnių leidinių „štilis“ pagaliau baigėsi. Ir drįsiu pareikšti, kad grupė to nusipelnė.
Taigi „Medis“ įsišaknijo ir suformavo tankią lają. Belieka palinkėti, kad jo kūrėjai ir toliau eitų teisingu keliu link muzikinio tobulėjimo, nes juk sakoma, kad tam nėra ribų. Na, o šnekant tekstų žodžiais, kad jis neužstotų šviesos, bet ir sakalai turėtų nuo kur pakilti. Ir nors sostinė jau stovi, kaip išpranašavo geležinio vilko stūgsmas, tebūnie tai dar ne pabaiga... The band from Lithuania has grown quite a lot together with their aims and offers if not the excellent, then at least original and interesting album. Music is different story here, it is playful and melodic, incorporating together folk melodies. You can expect a kind of a mix from black, folk and speed, which in my opinion would please both Running Wild and Korpiklaani fans. Strange?
Of course, the band has their own style, they sing in native tongue, they dig melodies. All of that has pleasantly surprised.

The legendary preacher Bill Hicks once spoke of a true enemy to the establishment. Adamant to the fact that behind every political mind lies the fear of having no control over the populace, Hicks insisted that once such commodities as drugs, violence and rock and roll were acceptable mediums, our next mortal enemy would be pornography. Where am I going with this I hear you screaming and spitting on the page? Well, Hicks, after declaring this fact, described the reason thusly: they don't know what it is. They don't like it, because they don't understand it. Enter Obtest, a long serving metal outfit hailing from Lithuania. And I'll be damned if I can explain this one to y'all...
I have dubbed this Pagan metal, as it is the closest approximation outside of the progressive label. The band's fourth album "Gyvybės Medis" - or "Tree of Life" - is one hell of a style cocktail, but also a very refreshing one. Sung entirely in their native language, "Gyvybės Medis" is a cross between Viking and black metal in essence, but the guitars - particular the solos - have more than a smattering of Dave Murray in them, ergo, the guitar work as a whole on this record is very Maiden-esque. Only sped up. To the max. In fact, such is the ferocity of the whirlwind, you hardly even notice unless you specify, and by then you will probably have figured out the music on this thing has more in common with NWOBHM than black or folk metal, which is only evident in the harsh, throaty vocals. This album is fast, I'm not kidding you, but also very melodic, with hugely catchy choruses, such as the anthemic Vedlys (Guide), the Ensiferum-like Sakalo Vaikai (Children Of The Hawk) or the progressively tinged Ąžuolas (Oak). True, the melodies are little more than punk-esque rambling and gang-shouting warrior chants, but they certainly stick around.
This is a very odd album indeed, but one you could listen to for hours and still find a shred of intransigent purpose with. If our next enemy is going to be Pagan metal, Obtest will certainly raise a few eyebrows. [8 / 10]

Als ich dieses Langeisen so aus dem Stapel fischte, das Cover begutachtete und den Promotext auf dem Backcover zu lesen bekam, dachte ich mir schon: "Au weia, wie kommt der Boss denn auf die Idee, dass ich etwas mit Baumkuschler-Metal anfangen könnte?" - doch statt der üblichen 6/8-Takt-Schunkelmelodien, Viking-/ Heathen-/ Pagan-Standardkost, latenter Bräunelei und Gesang, der zwischen C-Klasse-Black Metal-Shouter und Snorre im Vollsuff variiert, überraschen die bereits 1992 gegründeten, aber mir bis dato aus unerklärlichen Gründen unbekannten Litauer OBTEST mit einem einzigartigen, sonderbaren und faszinierenden Gemisch, das mit dem oldschooligen Black Metal der Anfangstage nicht mehr viel zu tun hat.
Dieses besteht aus thrashigen, deathigen und vor allem blackigen Einflüssen, aber auch an traditionellem Metal, stellenweise sogar 70er-beeinflusstem Hard Rock, findet sich - selbstverständlich in eine musikalisch extremere Hülle verpackt - das ein oder andere Versatzstück. Meist agieren die Balten in hohen Temporegionen, doch stets dominieren wundervolle Melodien, irgendwo zwischen progressiver Traditionsmanufaktur, Folklore, viel Pagan- und latenter Viking-Atmosphäre, schwarzmetallischer Epik und halsbrechericher Virtuosität.
Dank der transparenten, furztrockenen Produktion kommt jede einzelne Note dieser Melodien bestens zur Geltung, aber auch die interessanten Riffs und derbes Gesäge fräsen sich den Weg direkt ins Ohr. Das Schlagzeug tönt warm und relativ organisch, und auch dem Bass hat man viele Freiräume gelassen, so hört man auch im tieffrequenten Bereich oftmals die Finger übers Griffbrett tanzen. Ebenso weiß der kraftvolle, heroische und variable Gesang von Baalberith zu überzeugen und ist im Gegensatz zu vielen anderen tongeworden Peinlichkeiten ein dicker Pluspunkt auf dem komplett in litauisch getexteten Album.
Es ist allerdings nicht die Exotik, die "Gyvybės Medis" so reizvoll macht, nein, es ist die Stimmigkeit des Ganzen. Härte und Drive sorgen für Bewegungsimpulse, göttliche Melodien treiben einem die Tränchen in die Augen und Schauer über den Rücken, das technische Level lässt die Unterkiefer reihenweise gen Boden klappen, und das durchdachte, spannende Songwriting zaubert dem Hörer ein anerkennendes Stirnrunzeln, gepaart mit einem angetanen Lächeln, ins Gesicht. Oder kurz: ein tolles Album, bei dem jede einzelne der 3452 Sekunden (wohl mitgestoppt? - Doc) mehr als hörenswert ist.

I have mixed feelings on this. I don't like the vocals on this much as his voice does nothing for me, however, the music is crushing fast death/black metal that had me playing air drums more than a couple times. Actually his vocals aren't that bad, it is some parts that he sings that I am not too fond of, but at other times he is tolerable. The production is good as everything can be heard and I love the fast speedy parts and they took my head off. The drummer crushes on this puppy.

Richtig, das französische Label Osmose Productions hat sich nun ja die Band Obtest aus Litauen geangelt und das neueste Abum unter seine Fittiche genommen. Für die Band freut mich das ungemein, da man mit ein paar starken Alben im Rücken, wobei besonders der bärenstarke Vorgänger "Is Kartos I Karia" erwähnt werden sollte, schon für Furore sorgen konnte. Auf dem neusten Werk mit dem unaussprechlichen Namen "Gyvybés Medis", welches übersetzt soviel bedeutet wie "Baum des Lebens", wird der eingeschlagene Weg konsequent fortgeführt. Das Tempo ist durchweg flott gehalten, dennoch wird munter variiert. Im Vordergrund steht aber ganz deutlich die Melodie, die stets sehr hymnisch rüberkommt und schnell zum Mitgrölen einlädt. Das Ganze geht etwas in die Ensiferum Richtung, wobei Obtest deutlich eingängiger sind. Das Album wurde im polnischen Hertz Studios aufgenommen und entsprechend fett ist der Sound auch geworden. Ich ziehe den Vorgänger aufgrund seines starken Songmaterials diesem Werk hier noch vor, was aber nicht heissen soll, dass "Gyvybés Medis" schlecht wäre. Nur vermisse ich hier die herausstechenden Tracks, die eben "Is Kartos I Karia" meiner Ansicht auszeichnet.

If, like me, you're getting bored with the constant stream of second-rate folk metal albums produced by lazy musicians jumping on the viking bandwagon, Obtest is here to save your day! Founded in 1992 deep in the dark woods of Lithuania, Obtest evolved through the years from a pure pagan black metal outfit into a quite upbeat pagan/folk entity."Gyvybės Medis" (Tree of Life) is their fourth full-length, the one which hopefully will open the gates of recognition before them.
"Gyvybės Medis" (Tree of Life) is not a real folk metal album per se. The band's music mostly tends towards fast heavy metal, with strong thrash and power metal influences, and still with this pagan touch which sometimes resurfaces at full speed but mostly remains in the background, only to add a welcome epic feel to the songs. The band has now completely shaken off the black metal influences, which were already almost gone on their previous release. The only thing which can still remind of their glorious past is a couple of devastating blastbeats.
Unlike a lot of folk metal bands which rely on the use of non-metal instruments to disguise their relative lack of inspiration (I won't name anyone), Obtest successfully keep the old guitar/bass/drums formula. Actually, although this album is not very complex or multi-layered, although the riffs and structures and rather simple, the songwriting is so brilliant that it seems to be working on many levels, and so the album never gets boring even after repeated listens, in spite of its lack of variation. The guitar work is the major standout point here, with a lot of great, epic, thrashy, memorable riffs and above all a truckload of amazing solos - really, I'm not exaggerating, the solos ARE impressive on this album, there's a lot of them and they just fit. Despite its simplicity, it is obvious that the conception of this album required three long years of hard work.
Since the production is excellent for that type of record and the lyrics in Lithuanian (translations available on their webiste) about Lithuanian legends add a new side to the epic quality of this release, there's not much to say against "Gyvybės Medis". The grimmest metalheads may be annoyed by the upbeat atmospheres, but I defy anyone to find a cheesy passage here (except on the closing track, "Įkaitai", which sounds like a mix between Satriani and the Melrose Place music). Some might be turned off by the very "special" vocals of Baalberith - not really screamed, not really sung, rather monotonous and with a strong punk feel - but once you get used to them, you find yourself taken away in breathtakingly epic soundscapes, into a whirlwind of catchiness and fine melodies.
This is typically the kind of album that could appeal to fans of folk, heavy and thrash, or simply to people who really enjoy epic atmospheres. To sum up, although there's nothing really new here, the sheer quality of the songs and the musicianship make it my favourite folk metal album of 2008 so far. [8,2 / 10]

Kollege Memme hat seinerzeit den Vorgänger von „Gyvybes Medis“, „Is Kartos I Karta“, über den grünen Klee gelobt und den „Heathen War Metal“ der Litauer als gelungene Mischung aus traditionellen und wikingerischen Tönen bezeichnet. Und genau mit dieser Mischung habe ich persönlich hingegen so meine Problemchen. OBTEST sind einfach auf Zack, und „Gyvybes Medis“ ist eine richtig coole Scheibe, aber wenn man einerseits Einflüsse von IRON MAIDEN und RUNNING WILD (die ich hier beide am Stärksten heraushöre, besonders beim Gitarrensound) mit andererseits hymnischen, meist partykompatiblen Nordlichtanleihen der Marke ENSIFERUM, KORPIKLAANI und Co. verbindet, dann besteht die Gefahr, dass das Album weder die eine noch die andere Fraktion ordentlich bedient. OBTEST sind zwar weit überdurchschnittliche Songwriter und haben ihren Bastard ordentlich im Griff, aber auch der sehr gewöhnungsbedürftige, sich ebenfalls aus beiden Lagern gleichzeitig bedienende Gesang (halb gesungen, halb gegrowlt irgendwie) ist schweres Futter, das sicher nicht jedem schmecken wird. Wer aber mit dieser Art von Eigenständigkeit kein Problem hat, wird wirklich gute Stücke wie das sehr flotte „Vedlys“, die stampfende Hymne „Sviesa“ oder das geile, an „The Trooper“ erinnernde Abschluss-Instrumental „Ikaitai“ absolut zu schätzen wissen. Eine schon originelle, aber auch schwierige Platte!

Avec 16 ans d’existence au compteur, Obtest proposait jusqu’a ce jour, trois albums seulement. Mais ce n’est pas pour rien que ces Lituaniens sont amené a faire languir les fans entre chaque sorties avec, en guise d’en-cas, des EP maigrement fourni. Car oui, Obtest tape dans la qualité plus que dans la quantité, ce qui donne généralement naissance a des albums prodigieusement aboutis. Ce "Gyvybes Medis" n’échappe pas a la regle.
A travers un langage musical mélancolique et nostalgique, la formation rend hommage a la nature et aux éléments. Et comme tout bon groupe a tendance pagan, l’émotion qui se dégage des compos est tres intense. Cependant, point d’instruments traditionnels ici, mais un chant particulierement rustique puisque les textes sont scandés en lituanien d’une voix grave et rocailleuse mais jamais vraiment hurlée.
Le coté original du groupe se justifie par de nombreuses rythmiques speed/thrash et des lignes mélodiques accrocheuses sonnant tres heavy, les solos, d’ailleurs, sont d’une qualité exemplaire et donneraient presque un coté "cosmique" aux morceaux. Une richesse de composition donc qui n’en délaisse pas pour autant l’héritage black metal du groupe. Batterie char d’assaut et riffs acérés sont bien sur de la partie sans pour autant rendre le tout spécialement agressif.
Niveau prod, le Hertz Studio (Hate, Kronos, Vader…) rend tout a fait hommage a ce subtile pagan/black, aucun souci de ce coté la donc.
Vous l’aurez compris, tout fan du genre se doit de jeter ne serait-ce qu’une petite oreille sur cette nouvelle offrande d’Obtest. Et si jamais vous tombez sous le charme, il ne faudra pas hésiter a se procurer l’édition limitée qui présente la galette sous un tres joli packaging!
Bon vent de fraicheur sur la vague pagan/folk qui commence méchamment a prendre une tournure surabondante! [8 / 10]

Lithuanian act Obtest have been active since 1992, starting out as a run-of-the-mill black metal group before quickly expanding their ideas in the pagan direction. If 2005's "Is Kartos I Karta" saw black metal slide into the background of the band's stylistic leanings, with its ripping pace and slabs of heavy metal riffage, "Gyvybes Medis" sees the band arrive at their fated destination, and it is here that they may finally find the widespread exposure that has thus far eluded them. Obtest's recent step up to the Osmose roster suggests I'm not alone in this belief; this is one hell of a catchy disc.
Obtest's black metal past occasionally catches the ear on "Gyvybes Medis"; the way the melodies are developed, and the propensity to throw in a really deep, rattling drum roll will remind the listener of countless corpse-painted precursors, whilst vocalist Baalberith can turn on a harsh and hateful throat when it suits him. In the main part, though, only someone who had neglected actually to press the 'play' button would label this black metal. The major-key, folk-inspired beauty of "Ikaitai" has buried the black metal tag for good.
The defining feature of the music on offer here is the joyful, masterful, fluid guitar work. From opener "Apeigos" it is clear this won't be an album that holds back; after a grumbling, moody rock intro, an irrepressible show-off solo emerges (solos before vocals! Excellent stuff), telling you that this journey will be marked as much by power metal, heavy metal and hard rock as by pagan and folk themes. Huge melodies, flourish-filled leads (check out the tapping on "Sviesa" and the shredding delight of "Tai Ne Pabaiga") and some great crunchy riffs which can verge into thrash territory make this an album full of thrills, whilst the rousing, thundering pace will keep your feet tapping for the duration.
The vocal work ranges from the harsh shouts and growls already mentioned to more accessible clean, group choruses, which fit in more with the battle-pagan aura which this album effortlessly creates. The sense of folk pride that Obtest evince never feels anything but genuine; unsurprisingly given the strongly Catholic outlook of their native land, its late conversion to the cross and its formerly mighty political status. One part of me wishes one of our power metal specialists had got to work on this; they could give you a better description than 'a bit Skyforger-ish, with a touch of Ensiferum', but the other part is selfishly glad this addictive, well-constructed album landed with me instead. Powerful, melodic, convincing, pagan and destined to have wide appeal.

Ho particolarmente gradito il nuovo album dei lituani Obtest. Invece di propinarci il solito black metal nordico/falso nordico danno alle stampe un album di sicuro interesse. Gli Obtest suonano pagan metal cantato in lingua lituana. Primo punto di interesse. Il sound che si dipana dai novi brani contenuti in “Gyvybes Medis” e molto personale e originale differenziando la band rispetto ad altre, anche dello stesso filone. Infatti, sviluppano una base ritmica molto veloce e compatta su cui si ergono le chitarre che lavorano su tonalita potenti ed epiche. Su tutto si erge la voce del cantante che sembra recitare antiche preghiere barbare. "Gyvybes Medis" e un ottimo esempio di metal pagano. Inspirato e ben eseguito. Padre Quorthon sarebbe molto felice!

Sudie, black metal, sveikas, tradicinis sunkusis metale. Taip sveikinamės su Vilniaus metalistų epu, kuriam užlipdyta "pagonių karo metalo" etiketė. Pagoniško folko čia mažiau, sunkusis ar net power metalas kartais skamba visai trešovai, o visas albumas (išskyrus paskutiniąją instrumentuotę) yra gėdingas malonumas - melodingas, užkrečiantis ir pompastiškas.

Here it comes, the latest release from the most well-known Lithuanian metal band in the world - Obtest. Er... well, possibly the most well-known Lithuanian band of any genre, in a worldwide scale. Their previous, Is Kartos I Karta, was a Valhalla of an album, so I had great expectations about this one. The first listenings didn't yield euphoric results from my point of view like that album, but subsequent tries have thrown bright light onto this recording, until the point of categorizing it as a quite competent effort, powerful, clean and strong, though a step below their awesome aforementioned opus. It's like some freshness is absent, some originality is lacking. Gyvybės Medis delves into the classic heavy metal focus started in Is Kartos I Karta without leaving the pagan way of metal these guys usually wield. This is a highly effective collection of songs, but less “perfect” than before. It gives me the impression that some compositions here are imbalanced in the songmaking: the choruses are more worked than the rest, the songs are somehow crafted to groove but without a really inspired result on some parts. Still there are some anthemic choruses pushing the tracks to be outstanding and thus easily become live favourites, as in “Vedlys”, so this album stands for a crushing dose of heavy pagan metal in the Baltic way, entertaining and professional. However, I miss the overall bombastic result of the previous album. A good example of what I'm trying to depict is the title track: with an excellent uptempo rise and great guitar leads in the middle, the rest of the phrases of the song are mostly dull and dead easy. In fact this track features an atypical structure where there isn't a distinctive chorus, and this strengthens the verses-that-say-nothing-special feeling left on me. Nevertheless, “Sakalo Vaikai” (Czech organization Sokol came to my mind when I saw this title...) is one of the best Obtest tunes ever and represents the huge potential this band is bestowed by Perkunas. The Running Wild vibe adds a classic touch, too. “Ąžuolas” is also a severe punch in the face of non-metal-believers. Then, other songs are simply good and correct, which by itself is a remarkable fact in these times of crappy bands messing around the scene. Probably now you think I'm being too demanding in this review, but one must be that way with the best bands, and Obtest belong to this category! I regard them capable of doing some great things, and the future will prove me right, hopefully. This time they've performed a bit under (high) expectations. Other bands - most of them - have not so shiny forecasts.... Anyway, Gyvybės Medis will make several pagansters have a good time! [7,5 / 10]

A volte le piu rosee aspettative si schiudono in qualcosa di persino piu grande. Ero sicuro, lo ammetto, che il nuovo disco del gruppo lituano sarebbe stato bello: d’altro canto, perche avrebbe dovuto essere altrimenti dopo la pubblicazione di due dischi di successo come “Is Kartos I Karta” (2005) e “Auka Seniems Dievams” (2001)? Certo, pero, che non mi aspettavo tanto. Il primo dato che emerge prepotente e la grande raffinatezza tecnica e sonora: il suono degli Obtest e limpido e cristallino come manco i Def Leppard, gli assoli e le partiture di lead guitar, in particolare, raggiungono le nostre orecchie in tutta la loro pura bellezza. E cio e bene, perche e proprio nelle partiture di chitarra che si nasconde il segreto di “Gyvybes Medis” (“l’albero della vita”, in lituano): talora meste, talora rabbiose, a volte piu solari (benche il loro astro si mantiene sempre al livello del crepuscolo), ma sempre ed incondizionatamente impavide. A volte si sente la mancanza di una voce realmente melodica, e non solo di quella via di mezzo tra il latrato black e la rozza liricita dei Bathory di Baalberith, ma i ritornelli funzionano comunque egregiamente, talvolta spingendoci a cantare in una lingua di cui non conosciamo nemmeno l’alfabeto (“Vedlys”, “Gelezinis Vilkas”). Ma, ancora una volta, e la lead guitar, tecnica negli assoli e nelle rifiniture, parca ed intensa nelle linee melodiche, a rendere indimenticabili pezzi come “Apeigos”, la title-track, “Sakalo Vaikai” (che nasconde una reprise della sigla di Sandokan, chi lo sa se lo conoscono anche nei paesi baltici?), “Tai Ne Pabaiga” e “Ikaitai”. Proprio quest’ultima, strumentale, dimostra tutta la potenza del loro impianto musicale, un impianto in cui la sezione ritmica raramente raggiunge l’intensita parossistica del black vero e proprio, assumendo per lo piu un ruolo di rincalzo (unica eccezione “Sviesa”); ma, nondimeno, fondamentale. I Bathory lo hanno creato, gli Enslaved lo hanno rifinito: con gli Obtest, il viking/epic metal raggiunge il livello dell’eccellenza. [8,5 / 10]

Lithuanian formation Obtest released a strong album some time ago - it must have been, because I still remember I reviewed it. Now they're back with "Gyvybes Medis", featuring nine hymns with entirely Lithuanian lyrics, although Obtest clearly has international ambitions (with major gigs abroad, as far as the USA, already in 2007).
Both lyrically and musically, the band's main inspirations are heathen, folklore, and mythological themes. Consequently, Obtest is basically pagan metal, with minor but decisive influences from other genres, and with a somewhat distinctive sound. Tracks such as 'Sviesa' imbue the record with faster-paced moments, a little touch of aggressiveness; but that's all relative. No matter how fast or grinding it sometimes gets, "Gyvybes Medis" is almost purely a melodic approach of the genre. The raw, half-sung vocals, and the bare, almost heavy metal leads are an ideal match for rhythm section. More often than not, you'll find one guitar wandering off to the higher octaves in search of that magical series of notes.
All in all, this album listens away like a charm. The constant melodies drench the songs in an atmosphere of perfect harmony and flow; the folkish, sung choruses and the strong, propelling rhythms make "Gyvybes Medis" very catchy on top. Obtest obtains a very fresh sound here; and, in my opinion, deserves the international attention it aims for.

Ils viennent d’Europe de l’Est et font du Pagan Metal… Le nombre de groupes qui pourrait etre ainsi décrit semble en perpétuelle augmentation ces dernieres années. Ce style, a mi chemin entre heavy et black et assez proche du viking sur de nombreux aspects (inspiration traditionnelle et paienne, utilisation de contes et éléments du folklore local, exaltation épique des riffs et des lignes de chant…) fait aujourd’hui rage, et les combos défenseurs des valeurs anciennes se multiplient, et peinent souvent a surprendre ou a exalter nos ames guerrieres, un peu refroidies par la surenchere d’offre dans ce secteur.
En 16 ans d’existence, Obtest nous livre seulement son 4eme album. On peut donc légitimement en déduire que c’est un album mature et abouti qui nous arrive ici, livré par un combo a l’expérience conséquente. Et effectivement, ce « Gyvybės Medis », parfaitement produit et mixé, avec un son puissant et des compositions de qualité nous montre bien que nous avons ici a faire a des soldats aguerris, passés maitres dans le maniement de leurs armes électriques.
L’album commence, et difficile alors de ne pas penser aux lettons de Skyforger. Meme type de chant, un peu thrashisant, rauque, ni purement clair, ni extreme, juste un peu nerveux par moments, quoique généreux en conviction et vigueur épique, meme type de rythmiques, énergiques sans etre trop bourrines. Mais tandis que le son s’avere radicalement différent, celui d’Obtest paraissant plus clair et équilibré, nos lituaniens se séparent aussi de leurs confreres par une absence d’utilisation d’éléments folkloriques. La musique d’Obtest est brute, linéaire, toujours mélodique, mais dépourvue d’arrangements superflus ou artifices. Elle ne repose sur rien d’autre que ces fameux riffs pour faire prévaloir ses arguments. Autant dire tout de suite que les guitaristes ont intéret a etre inspirés…
Et bien oui, ils le sont. Comme pour l’album précédent, si l’on en croit la chronique de l’ami TeRyX, difficile de ne pas etre rebuté aux premieres écoutes par le coté massif et la grande homogénéité de l’ensemble. On se dit au bout de quelques titres que tout cela se ressemble et manque d’accroche, et alors, on pourrait etre tenté de laisser tomber… Ce qui serait vraiment une grave erreur!
Car au fil des écoutes, les riffs se retiennent, les secrets se révelent, et l’on se surprend a chantonner un air de lead guitar au détour d’un solo ou d’un refrain…On se régale particulierement de l’épique « Apeigos », tres bonne ouverture, de l’efficace titre éponyme (quelle intro!) ou de l’instrumentale finale « Ikaitai », a la fluidité parfaite et qui s’écoute avec grand plaisir. Pour le reste, on alterne entre parties plus black, purement heavy ou un peu thrashisante, avec toujours ce souffle épique qui sait se manifester quand il faut. Pour le reste, il semble que la musique du groupe n’ait guere évolué depuis l’album précédent. Pas assez de breaks, des choeurs bien trop discrets et manquant de force, et j’avoue qu’un peu d’acoustique aurait vraiment été bienvenue par instants…
Quoiqu’il en soit, voila un album a découvrir, ne serait-ce que par curiosité, et qui devrait pouvoir séduire les amateurs du genre. Attention, c’est du brut, mais la propreté du son et la qualité des lignes de guitare et chant devrait pouvoir faire passer ca sans probleme. Mention spéciale au jeu du batteur, subtil, fin et racé, qui apporte un peu de personnalité et beaucoup de peche aux compositions. En bref, un album convaincant, qu’on peut se procurer dans une édition limitée au packaging sublime (demandez donc son avis a Spirit of Gaia). On attend simplement plus de variété et d’innovations pour la suite, ou bien il est probable qu’Obtest aura du mal a s’imposer durablement sur cette scene, comme on vous l'a dit, prolifique mais… encombrée, aussi. Obtest er nok Litauens mest annerkjente band innen den ekstreme formen for metal, og fortrinnsvis innen folk/black metal sjangeren. Bandet har holdt på siden 1992, og dette er deres fjerde album, og også det mest gjennomarbeidede ifølge undertegnede. Det forrige albumet var kanskje bedre låtmessig, men her har også produksjonen livnet til.
Men om det helt hjelper vet jeg ikke, da jeg aldri har hatt noe veldig godt forhold til bandet tidligere, mest på grunn av litt spake produksjoner, og også det faktum at vokalen rett og slett er gruelig svak til tider i en slags halvraspende form, naturligvis på litauensk (eller hva pokker man kaller det). Så om jeg skjønner null av det de vil fram til så klarer jeg enkelt og greit ikke å fatte alt av musikken.
Men, det positive på dette albumet er at de har noen veldig gode melodilinjer som faktisk står på egenhånd, også opp imot andre band i folk/metal sjangeren, som ofte blir veldig likt. Og det skal Obtest ha endel kudos for faktisk. Gitaristen gjør en god jobb, spesielt på tittellåta som på engelsk blir noe som "Tree of Life", men spesielt også på den avsluttende "Hostages".
Men skal jeg ta frem denne ved en senere anledning så må det være av ren nyskjerrighet og glemsel, for selv om produksjon og det spillemessige denne gangen er over forventet så skjønner jeg ikke helt tegninga for bandets eksistens, mulig det bare er jeg som er teit. [5 / 10]

The thing I love about Metal is it’s scene of the ancient, timeless or even forgotten lore that is so much apart of the music we love. Coming out of Lithuania is Obtest a Heathen Metal act who through out their 4th album Gyvybes Medis (Tree Of Life) manages to weave all three of said things into their outstanding Metal attack. On top of this Obtest sing totally in Lithuanian giving their Metal an even more authentic touch. Being on French label Osmose Productions I naturally thought that Obtest would be an over the top extreme act, and while Obtest have extremities, they are also a classic sounding band with a lot of sensibilities about them.. If you’re looking for a hot new band then you can not go past Obtest.

Con l'album "Iš Kartos Į Kartą" del 2005, gli Obtest si sono ritagliati uno spazio decisivo nella scena pagan internazionale contemporanea. Il disco, acclamato dalla critica e dai fan, ha fatto da spartiacque nella carriera dei lituani, ora piu forti che mai. Gli Obtest sono con tutta probabilita il gruppo piu rappresentativo dell'intera scena baltica, ed e quindi con piacere che mi ritrovo a recensire il loro ritorno: "Gyvybės Medis". Tra l'album precedente e questo, gli Obtest hanno pubblicato un EP: "Prieš Audrą" ha visto la luce nel 2006. In esso sono state riprese alcune tracce del demo omonimo del 1995, piu due canzoni inedite che, stando a quanto dichiarato dal gruppo in un'intervista a Shapeless, avrebbero dovuto far parte di un 7".
"Gyvybės Medis" vede il passaggio degli Obtest alla storica etichetta francese Osmose Records, molto nota negli anni '90 per il contributo all'allora di successo scena black. La band rimane comunque sotto contratto anche con l'ottima Ledo Takas Records, loro etichetta storica e punto di riferimento inevitabile per il metal baltico.
Messo da parte il senso di mistero derivato dalle origini black metal, gli Obtest ci rivelano ufficialmente la loro formazione: la line-up che ha inciso l'album consiste in Baalberith alla voce, Sadlave ed Enrikas alle chitarre, Demonas al basso e Insmuth alla batteria. Quindi, formazione classicamente metal, senza il facile artificio di tastiere o strumenti tradizionali, come capita sempre piu spesso nell'ambiente pagan.
La copertina di "Gyvybės Medis" e molto evocativa, ed e perfettamente coerente con la musica e l'immaginario della band. Realizzata con tratti professionali e convincenti, essa ci mostra un albero solitario e rigoglioso, carico di foglie e stagliato contro un cielo colorato di nuvole bianche. L'albero occupa meta della copertina. L'altra meta ritrae invece le sue radici, altrettanto estese e rigogliose, che penetrano in profondita nel terreno rossastro.
Passo subito quindi alla recensione del CD, evitando di perdere tempo in inutili notizie biografiche: il lettore potra trovare tutte le informazioni relative alla storia degli Obtest nella recensione di "Iš Kartos Į Kartą", presente negli archivi della nostra zine.
Il disco si apre con "Apeigos", che vuol dire "Riti". Come l'album precedente, anche questa uscita gode di una produzione esplosiva e nitidissima. Pur non essendo velocissima, la canzone ha una ritmica trascinante, grazie all'ottimo lavoro della batteria, che insiste particolarmente con l'uso della grancassa. La melodia, sempre presente, prende forma dal lavoro delle due chitarre, abili ad alternarsi nelle proprie funzioni: una, piu virtuosa, colorisce il tutto; l'altra, si limita a tracciare le linee melodiche con puntualita e gusto. Lo stile e inconfondibile, e la qualita dell'arrangiamento e sempre ad alti livelli. La voce del cantante e rozza, assolutamente non estesa, ma e adattissima al sound del gruppo: il pagan dei lituani non e infatti morbido, evocativo, ripetitivo, atmosferico. Gli Obtest sono sempre stati rabbiosi, e le loro canzoni sono costantemtente pregne di un fortissimo senso epico e guerresco.
"Vedlys" e aperta da una serie di riff melodici serrati e da un potente blastbeat ritmico. La chitarra solista arricchisce il tutto col suo facile virtuosismo. Questa volta il cantante e piu arrabbiato, e "Vedlys" pare rinverdire i fasti di una canzone quale "Paskutinė Akimirka", vero highlight dell'album precedente. Che tiro! E che sonorita, calde e virili! La grandezza di questo gruppo e evidente da tanti particolari, ma uno e piu importante degli altri: il suono e davvero personale! Gli Obtest hanno un suono unico ed inconfondibile: e impossibile confonderli con altri. Non e affatto una cosa da poco! Inoltre, i lituani riescono sempre a stupirci con tanti colpi di genio: si ascolti ad esempio l'assolo di chitarra, spudoratamente heavy metal. Insomma, le influenze del gruppo si ampliano di anno in anno, ed il loro pagan non vuole certo ammorbidirsi, anzi, la componente classicamente metal si fa sempre piu accentuata. Bella strofa e ritornello accattivante: grande canzone.
Ehi, che attacco power! "Šviesa" e, per quanto sembri impossibile, ancora piu serrata ed aggressiva del brano precedente! Il blastbeat e a livelli inumani, la strofa morde e colpisce duro grazie alle bordate delle chitarre, ficcanti come coltellate. Il ritornello enfatizza invece la melodia, che non lascia scampo. L'elemento power metal e presente esclusivamente a livello ritmico, mentre il resto dell'arrangiamento e... indubbiamente alla Obtest. Credetemi ragazzi: in tutta sincerita pensavo che il gruppo non sarebbe mai riuscito a migliorarsi rispetto al bellissimo "Iš Kartos Į Kartą": e invece, eccomi piacevolmente contraddetto! La chitarra solista ha fatto passi da gigante, e la musica si e fatta ancora piu terremotante e trascinante. La tecnica e stupefacente, la professionalita supera di gran lunga quella di gruppi piu quotati. E' un delitto che gli Obtest siano ancora un gruppo underground! Davvero un delitto! Ma il pubblico che li apprezza sta aumentando di giorno in giorno e, per citare Fidel Castro, credo proprio che la storia li assolvera, eheh!
Ecco ora la traccia che da il titolo all'album, la cui traduzione in italiano e "Albero Della Vita". Dopo qualche battuta introduttiva, la canzone entra nel suo vivo mantenendo una ritmica controllata. La strofa e costituita da una melodia semplice, che presto si scontra con un'accelerazione repentina, sulla quale la chitarra solista sembra voler ricreare una melodia popolare. Come al solito pero, gli Obtest non tentano di riproporre musiche popolari in chiave metal, ma utilizzano solo piccoli spunti e suggestioni, che vengono inseriti in un contesto decisamente moderno e metal. Inoltre, il gruppo non ricerca troppi artifici: il lavoro delle due chitarre e del basso e piu che sufficiente per la creazione di sonorita intense e ricche. I volumi sono missati alla perfezione, e non si notano difetti. Questo perché il gruppo ha le idee molto chiare. E, a quanto pare, il gran numero di concerti, tra cui anche un tour negli Stati Uniti, ha permesso al quintetto di incrementare la propria esperienza.
Tanta melodia anche in "Sakalo Vaikai". Pur ricorrendo a figure tipiche del metal, non c'e passaggio nelle composizioni che sia banale. Passaggio dopo passaggio, gli Obtest lasciano a bocca aperta perché le loro idee si rivelano sempre vincenti. I lituani riescono nel difficile compito di dar vita a melodie di facile presa, senza ricorrere a idee trite e ritrite. Ed anche quando un riff e di stampo classico, c'e sempre quel particolare che lo distingue dal resto. Melodia e potenza vanno a braccetto come gia e accaduto in passato. L'ascolto di canzoni come questa e un piacere sia per il cuore, trascinato dalla loro irruenza, sia per il cervello, che si puo godere una raffinatezza dietro all'altra.
"Ąžuolas", ovvero "Quercia", alterna una strofa agile e schizzata con un ritornello cadenzato ed incisivo: la lingua lituana e un piccolo ostacolo, che inibisce la nostra reazione istintiva ad intonare il ritornello insieme alla band. Ma il suono di questa bella lingua e inscindibile dalla musica degli Obtest. Il loro fascino sta anche in questo! Anche la melodia di questa canzone e in minore, e pur essendoci delle ovvie somiglianze tra una composizione e l'altra, non ci troviamo di certo di fronte ad un gruppo che sforni canzoni tutte uguali. Anzi, uno dei (tanti, quanti ne ho gia elencati, eheh?!) punti di forza del quintetto e proprio la creativita esplosiva, unita ad un'ispirazione che sembra non esaurirsi mai.
Indomabile e testarda, "Geležinis Vilkas" ("Il Lupo D'Acciaio"... bel titolo metal!), mantiene elevato il livello del disco. E mi spinge a sottolineare il lavoro del basso, che spesso tende a passare in sordina. Demonas e davvero un virtuoso, che non si limita mai solo ad accompagnare. La padronanza strumentale e notevole per ogni membro del gruppo. Questa e quindi una cosa che fa la differenza. Non ci si puo improvvisare ad essere grandi. Bisogna aver lavorato, sudato ed aver mantenuto la costanza per continuare a farlo. Solo in seguito a tutto questo, si puo allora vedere se si ha talento o meno. Gli Obtest hanno fatto tanta gavetta, e l'umilta non e mai venuta meno. Questa canzone si distingue per alcuni passaggi di chitarra acustica.
"Tai Ne Pabaiga" mi ha fatto sorridere: la strofa e davvero particolare, tanto che si potrebbero quasi avvertire echi di punk/hardcore. Poi la canzone si evolve, e l'elemento metal prende il sopravvento su tutto. Cosa come le classiche melodie distese, sebbene sostenute da ritmi vigorosi, tipiche dei lituani. Pero le canzoni presenti in quest'album non presentano solo miglioramenti, ma un'evoluzione vera e propria: come ho scritto prima, le influenze sono aumentate, e l'elemento heavy metal si e fatto piu presente ed evidente. "Questa Non E' La Fine" recita il titolo della canzone, una volta tradotto: c'e da sperare che il gruppo si evolva ancora, e che ci stupisca sempre di piu in futuro!
La composizione finale del CD si intitola "Įkaitai", "Ostaggi". Si tratta di uno strumentale caratterizzato da belle melodie, suonate da chitarre indomabili, che ci mostra una band che avanza compatta, senza prime donne. Il suono d'assieme, cosa ricco ed energico, e un piacere per le orecchie. Com'e possibile resistere?
Ebbene sa, non ci volevo credere ma gli Obtest si sono superati. Ed hanno sfornato un grande album. Sa, grande, rispetto a tutte le uscite trascurabili che hanno inflazionato di brutto il panorama pagan. Quante uscite sono molto simili fra di loro? Quanti gruppi sono ormai privi di personalita? Il pagan metal e diventato un'accozzaglia crudele di cliché, che rende ormai scontati anche i gruppi piu talentuosi. C'e chi opta per gli strumenti tradizionali, chi invece lascia il metal per dedicarsi al folk, o all'ambient. E la noia prende il sopravvento, perché le idee sembrano ripetersi all'infinito, stancando anche gli ascoltatori piu accaniti. Poi, c'e un gruppo come gli Obtest che suona pagan, e si libera da tutti i vincoli. Suona una musica ben definibile, sa, e legata alla tradizione. Canta inni alla propria terra ed ai tempi pagani. Strizza l'occhio alle usanze della sua terra. Ma lo fa con chitarre elettriche, basso e batteria, come un vero gruppo rock. Lo fa picchiando, e componendo melodie intelligenti. E con un suono unico ed inconfondibile, che non si perde in inutili intellettualismi ma che al tempo stesso non copia e stracopia cia che hanno fatto gli altri. In quest'ottica dev'essere visto il grande lavoro che gli Obtest stanno facendo da anni. Con gli ultimi due album, i lituani hanno dimostrato che il pagan ha molto da dire, e che si puo far rivivere una scena ormai satura... basta pensare con la propria testa!
Davvero, mi sento onorato di aver recensito per la seconda volta gli Obtest. Auguro al gruppo le fortune migliori. [9 / 10]

Since the inception of Obtest in 1992 the band has progressed to being more melodic and dynamic then their original black metal roots. “Gyvybes Medis” (Tree of Life) continue this progression without ignoring their history.
Obtest music is among the heathen/pagan variety. Elements from black, death, folk, doom, thrash and traditional metal are felt throughout their composition. Putting a label on their music proves to be useless due to their variation in arrangements. While hearing all of the previously mentioned metal forms within “Gyvybes Medis,” Obtest is still rather unique. Traditional heavy metal with blackened metal roots would probably be the best interpretation or maybe even Viking metal. They actually remind me of a combination of the bands Slough Feg, Mental Home and Enslaved.
Obtest’s diverse songs structures on “Gyvybes Medis” gives you a different feel on just about every track. The dynamics of the songs changes from the melodic to discordant and are paced from slow to fast. In other words each track carries its own vibe.
The band uses a layering technique to make their music feel rich in sound. There isn’t a dull point in their music where the listener feels that there is something missing. There are several riffs that are appealing to the listener including those that are speed-driven, melancholic, and harmonious, though much of this album stays on the aggressive side. There are quality solos too. Vocals are rough voiced to near black metal grimaces. Lyrical themes seem to be about war, mythology, history, and heathen approaches.
“Gyvybes Medis” has 9 songs and over 43 minutes on it and there is multiple different release versions available for purchase; three in total. The formats include a digipak compact disk, a limited edition picture vinyl record and a limited edition collectors' A5 sized CD book. If you are looking for a unique brand of extreme metal then Obtest’s “Gyvybes Medis” is for you! [83 / 100]

Desde que recibi la promo del anterior trabajo de los lituanos Obtest, "Is Kartos I Karta", he tenido a este quinteto en mi top favorito de Pagan Metal, codeandose con Primordial y Drudkh, representando las tres bandas todo el espectro de diferencias que podemos ver en el estilo. Sin duda su anunciado disco para este ano me tenia muy a la espera de ver como iban a evolucionar, y mis expectativas eran muy altar, aun siendo francamente dificil llegar mas lejos que con el anterior album.
Por esa razon, cuando me puse por primera vez este "Gyvybes Medis" tuve una enorme decepcion, no se porque pero los temas me sabian a poco, como si la frescura y garra de su predecesor ya no estuviesen aqui. Pero menos mal que no suelo apresurarme a la hora de hacer la critica de un disco, y le he dado muchas mas oportunidades a esta grabacion (muchisimas diria yo). No me entendais mal, no es que hayan cambiado radicalmente de estilo, siguen haciendo lo que mejor saben hacer, Pagan Metal melodico y muy reminiscente del Heavy Metal, pero alejados de esa ola de bandas de pseudo-Pagan de tintes powermetaleros, no por introducir melodias se les tiene que entremezclar con esa "escena"; de hecho, en este nuevo trabajo resurgen algo mas que en el anterior las melodias mas blackeras, aunque en lineas generales sea menos directo que "Is Kartos I Karta".
Sin duda el cambio mas significativo es que en realidad han optado algo mas por la variedad, en lugar de centrarse en los ritmos rapidos y guerreros, dando algo mas de cabida a los medios tiempos, a la atmosfera y a la melodia vocal (lo mejor de la banda desde siempre bajo mi punto de vista). No se han olvidado de meter temas en la onda del anterior disco, como "Sviesa", donde las cabalgatas y las melodias a toda velocidad te hacen rememorar batallas ancestrales(y como lo hacen, son francamente alucinantes); pero, por ejemplo, para abrir el disco han usado un tema mas melancolico, y a lo largo del disco ese es el sentimiento que mas se deja percibir, una melancolia bastante profunda. Eso si, una melancolia con fuerza, nada de sentimientos depresivos, si no todo lo contrario, lo suyo es rememorar el pasado como una busqueda positiva de algo mejor, y sin duda ese positivismo lo transportan al oyente como pocas bandas, es dificil no mover la cabeza y cantar sus estribillos.
No han cambiado excesivamente en lo que corresponde a la produccion, siguen usando un sonido de guitarras muy melodico y algo cortante, ligeramente blackero, pero a medio camino entre ambas cosas, y una bateria que suena muy contundente pero no se pasa en el volumen ni en que el bombo parezca una apisonadora, lo cual no convendria a su musica. Eso si, el bajo es practicamente como si no existiese, y le daria un pequeno toque de pesadez que no estaria mal.
De nuevo presentacion de lujo, mas acorde a su estilo imposible, y edicion en tres formatos: CD normal, CD digibook  A5 y vinilo. Que mas quereis? La escena del este esta mas en forma que nunca y es el momento de apoyarla. [9 / 10]

Since I received the promo CD of the previous album of the Lithuanian OBTEST, "Is Kartos I Karta", I've had them in my personal Pagan Metal top favourites, together with Primordial and Drudkh, as the three bands represent all the different spectra we can see in that style. Without any doubt their announced new album for this year made me wait to see how they could evolve, and my expectations were really high, even if it was really hard to go further than the first album. Because of that, when I first put "Gyvybes Medis" in the player it was quite a deception, I don't know why but the songs sounded too poor. The freshness and rage of its predecessor were not there any more. But I didn't want to rush things up when it comes to doing a review of the album so I gave it a lot more opportunities (really a lot I would say). Don't misunderstand me, they haven't changed their style radically, they're still playing what they do best, which is melodic Pagan Metal with a lot of Heavy Metal influences. But away from all that Power Metal influenced pseudo-Pagan bands, and it's not necessary to mix them with that "scene" because of their use of melodies. In fact, on this new album the more blacker melodies are raising again, even if, in general, it is less straight than "Is Kartos I Karta". Without any doubt, the most meaningful change is that they chose to use more variety, instead of focusing on fast and warlike riffs, giving the midpaced parts some more space as well as the atmosphere and vocal melodies (always the best of this band from my point of view). They haven't forgot to include some tracks in the vein of their previous album, like 'Sviesa' in which the fast melodies make you think of ancient battles (and how they do it, frankly astonishing). But, they open the album with a more melancholic song, and throughout the album that's the feeling you will find the most, a quite deep melancholy. But a strong one, no depressive feelings here, but the opposite. They remember the past like a positive search for something better, and without any doubt they transmit that to the listener like few bands I've heard. It's difficult not to bang your head and sing their chorusses. They haven't changed the production too much. They're still using a melodic guitar sound, a bit sharp, slightly blacker, but at a half way of both things, and really heavy drums, even if they don't sound too high nor the bass drum looks like a steamroller, which wouldn't arrange their music. Even though, the bass is more like it didn't exist, and it would add a little bit more heaviness to the sound which wouldn't be bad. Again, they have a luxurous artwork, just great for their style, and three different versions of the album: a jewel case CD, A5 digibook CD and vinyl LP. What else do you want? The Eastern scene is in shape and it's time to support it.

Wer immer noch glaubt, dass es in Ländern wie Estland oder Litauen keine gescheiten Metal-Bands gibt, der irrt sich gewaltig - Combos wie LOITS oder OBTEST zeigen, dass dort sehr wohl professionelle, ausgereifte Musik fabriziert wird, und das nicht erst seit gestern. OBTEST zum Beispiel stammen aus Litauen und wurschteln schon seit Anfang der Neunziger in der heimischen Szene herum, brachten es in diesen über 15 Jahren auf mehrere Demos, EP's sowie drei Full-Length-Alben und haben sicher auch die eine oder andere Live-Show bestritten. Dank Osmose Productions bekommen die Jungs nun die Chance, ihren durchaus ansprechenden Pagan Metal einem breiteren Publikum vorzustellen. Eine sehr gute Entscheidung, wie ich finde, denn sonst wäre man wahrscheinlich niemals in den Genuss solcher Pagan-Perlen wie "Sviesa", dem Titelsong oder dem göttlichen Abschluss-Instrumental "Ikaitai" gekommen. OBTEST sind hörbar um Abwechslung bemüht, schöne Gitarren-Melodien und eingängige Gesangsparts sind den Litauern scheinbar sehr wichtig. Grob gesagt könnte man die Band als Mischung aus FOREFATHER, CATAMENIA und FALCONER sowie einer guten Portion der finnischen Folk-Metal-Schule a la FINNTROLL oder ENSIFERUM beschreiben. Auffallend ist die sehr gute Gitarrenarbeit, was sich vor allem in einigen wirklich starken Leads und Soli äußert (man höre zum Bleistift mal "Azuolas"). Ebenfalls positiv sticht der druckvolle Sound hervor - genauso muss sich Pagan / Heathen Metal anhören, nicht zu klinisch perfekt, aber auch nicht zu dünn und nichtssagend. Etwas störend finde ich, dass die Songs oft einfach ausgeblendet werden, und das nicht selten während den besten Parts (so geschehen beim Titelsong). Ansonsten bin ich aber sehr angetan von "Gyvybes Medis" - OBTEST haben definitiv das Zeug, in der internationelen Pagan-Heathen-Szene kräftig mitzumischen. Am besten wie immer selbst überzeugen... One of the great things about running a metal zine is that you get to hear new bands from all over the world. You get to discover great music and bands from far off countries, countries like Lithuania. You don't hear much about the Lithuanian metal scene but there are some great bands from this little country just north of Poland and bordering the Baltic Sea. Several of these bands like Folkearth, Folkodia, and Obtest play great metal and use their heritage and ancestry as inspiration behind their music and lyrics.
Obtest formed originally as a black metal band back in 1992 but their music has changed over the years into the style of Viking metal with black metal overtones that they play today. "Gyvybės Medis" is Obtest's fourth full-length and was released on Osmose and the Lithuanian label Ledo Takas. It took me a few listens to get into this album for some reason, but once I did I realized that it was actually a great album. The thing I enjoyed most about the band's music was the guitar work of Sadlave and Enrikas Slavinskis. Their furious galloping riffs and endless guitar solos are highly impressive and at times remind me a bit of power metal. Baalberith's gruff vocals sung completely in Lithuanian give the music an epic feel and sound like they carry some power metal influence as well. The rhythm section is made up of bassist Demonas and the drummer Insmuth and their work together is extremely tight and pummeling. The production on "Gyvybės Medis" is excellent and the band has easily gained a new fan in me. Definitely seek this one out if you like Viking/Pagan metal and I don't think you will be disappointed at all!

Obtest ha sido una de las bandas mas representativas e importantes del Este de Europa desde sus comienzos, posteriormente conocida a gran escala por todo el continente tras la gira presentacion de su gran trabajo “Iš Kartos I Kartą”. En el 2007, ofrecen numerosas actuaciones por Estados Unidos -una de ellas el “Heathen Crusade”-, terminando de cubrir la mayor parte del territorio mundial y situandose como una de las bandas mas importantes del llamado Heathen Pagan Metal. Como reconocimiento al trabajo y calidad de los lituanos, el sello frances Osmose Productions los incluye entre sus filas dejando ademas via libre al sello Ledo Takas Records (sello que los ha visto crecer y madurar) una edicion de lujo en Cd Book tamano A5.
Se nota que “Gyvybės Medis” es el trabajo mas ambicioso de los lituanos. Por un lado graban en los Hertz Studio de Polonia superando con creces la produccion de su predecesor, sin alejarse demasiado del sonido de antano pero dotandolo de mas fuerza, de la potencia justa que necesitaban unas guitarras y una bateria con pegada suficiente. Ademas, si observamos el logo de Obtest, vemos ligeras diferencias en cuanto al simbolo central, mostrando lo que podria ser un Yggdrasil con circulo solar anadido, vamos, el arbol de la vida o “Gyvybės Medis” en lituano igualmente representado en la soberbia portada.
Los que pudieron escuchar en su dia “Iš Kartos I Kartą” saben lo alto que dejaron el liston estos nativos del Baltico, ahora la duda puede ser resuelta si le damos varias oportunidades a “Gyvybės Medis” ya que es un trabajo que puede no cubrir todas las expectativas en un principio. Por supuesto la banda sigue con su personal Pagan Metal con el inconfundible registro vocal de Baalberith y sus esporadicos corales epicos que ensalzarian el fervor de una batalla. Atras quedaron las influencias dentro del Black Metal y aunque la banda sigue siendo rapida y agresiva, entre otras progresiones ritmicas calmadas, se entienden mejor como una formacion epica de Thrash, Heavy y Death melodico. Lo primero que se vera al poco de introducir el CD sera la impresionante madurez tecnica de estos musicos, cuyo resultado son largos solos virtuosos de guitarra o melodias impregnadas del folk tradicional de su tierra mucho mas complejas que de costumbre, manteniendo un juego preciso de estados animicos: melancolico, jovial o colerico. Alguno puede que ya se este echando las manos a la cabeza... “otra banda mas que se vende al mainstream epico”. Segun se mire, lo que si es cierto es que ya no son una banda Underground pero entre ese elenco de bandas que con el tiempo evolucionan o buscan otras influencias, Obtest es de las que mas fieles se han mantenido a su estilo, y ante las inquietudes y madurez de unos musicos no se le pueden poner ni peros ni barreras, menos cuando a calidad musical nos referimos se mantienen o incluso se superan. Me remito al caso de Mithotyn en “Gathered Around the Oaken Table”, un disco evolucionado con respecto a “In the Sign of the Ravens”, menos agresivo, mas facil de escuchar, pero mantenia el “feeling” y la grandiosidad de los sonidos epicos y folcloricos, aunque fuera en terrenos de estilo musical relativamente diferentes.
No encontrareis sentimientos gratuitos, ni fortuitas melodias manidas hasta la saciedad, solo encontrareis a Obtest. [8,5 / 10]

Zwei Sachen kann man den Männern von Obtest sicherlich nicht vorwerfen: 1. Dass sie ein paar Jungspunde sind, die auf den erfolgreichen Pagan Metal-Zug aufgesprungen sind, denn mittlerweile kann die litauische Band bereits ihr 16 jähriges Bestehen feiern. Und 2. Dass sie einfach wie die x-te Kopie einer Heidengruppe klingen, schliesslich bringen die fünf – trotz oder eben vielleicht gerade wegen ihres Alters – frischen Wind in die Szene.
Auf Obtest aufmerksam wurde ich durch die Benennung ihres Musikstils: Pagan Heavy Metal. Schon allein das war wie Musik in meinen Ohren. Zwei so tolle Stile zusammen gemischt, das klang für mich nach dem ultimativen, neuen Hörgenuss. Während ich auf die Scheibe wartete, rätselte ich, ob sie nun wie Iron Maiden mit Dudelsack oder vielleicht eher wie Judas Pries mit Humppa-Melodien klingen würde. Als ich mir "Gyvybės Medis" endlich zu Gemüte führen konnte, waren meine übertriebenen Vorstellungen und auch Erwartungen natürlich schnell zerstört. Es ist wiederum auch nicht verwunderlich, dass man sich unter dem Begriff Pagan Heavy Metal vor allem kraftvollen Klargesang und Folk-Rhythmen vorstellt. Aber auf dem ganzen Album ist kein einziges Folk-Instrument zu hören und der Sänger würde bei einer Heavy Metal-Band wohl nie eingestellt werden.
Nun aber genug davon, wie Obtest nicht klingen und dafür etwas zum Thema, wie sie denn klingen. Der Gesang ist rau, meist geschrien oder etwas kratzig gesungen und erinnert an Thrash Metal. Die gesanglichen Qualitäten des Frontmanns lassen aber doch etwas zu wünschen übrig und stellenweise wirkt das ganze so monoton, das sich dieser Eindruck negativ auf das Gesamtbild des Liedes auswirkt. Bei gewissen Stellen hat man sogar das Gefühl, dass der Beitrag von Sänger Baalberith überhaupt nicht zu der Musik passt. Interessanterweise bringt aber gerade der Gesang am meisten Pagan Metal-Atmosphäre und zwar dann, wenn er einen leicht pathetischen und hymnischen Charakter annimmt. Ebenfalls aus dem Heiden-Bereich kommen die Liedtexte, die übrigens ausschliesslich in Litauisch verfasst sind. Sie handeln von historischen und mythologischen Themen.
Das Klanggerüst besteht aus schnellerem, sehr gitarrenlastigem Sound, der eben doch vor allem in Richtung Heavy Metal tendiert. Garniert wird es durch Blastbeats und viele Gitarrensoli. Letztere sind wirklich überzeugend und auch ansonsten ist spieltechnisch alles mehr als in grünen Bereich. Gleiches gilt für die anständige Produktion.
Man kann sich schlussendlich ziemlich gut vorstellen, dass Obtest live sogar vor einem typischen Pagan Metal Publikum gut ankommen. Trotzdem muss man den fünf Litauern in erster Linie zu Gute halten, dass sie schon lange ihren ganz eigenen Sound haben. Das alleine sollte aber schon Grund genug sein, "Gyvybės Medis" anzutesten. Que de chemin parcouru par le groupe Lithuanien en quelques années! Quand on voit le niveau atteint sur "Gyvybes Medis" apres un "Is Kartos Karta" somme toute assez commun, on est impressionné par le travail fourni. Le groupe a su peaufiner au fil des ans son Pagan Metal en s'appuyant sur l'expérience acquise lors de nombreux festivals, dont un aux USA (une premiere pour un groupe Lithuanien). Les compositions sonnent désormais beaucoup plus professionnelles, plus matures, avec toujours ce souci de rechercher la mélodie entrainante, l'ambiance captivante. Si le groupe n'utilise pas de clavier, il n'en perd pas pour autant son pouvoir de fascination par rapport aux groupes de Folk, tant l'accroche des refrains est idéale. En restant critique, on pourrait cependant reprocher au groupe la production parfois en deca de ce qu'il aurait fallu, mais franchement, repousser "Gyvybes Medis" sur cette simple excuse ne serait pas tres avisé. En trouvant en Osmose un label lui permettant de se faire mieux connaitre en Europe de l'Ouest, OBTEST avait fait un grand pas en avant. En sortant "Gyvybes Medis", le groupe commence a vraiment démarrer apres 16 ans d'existence.

OBTEST est une formation etablie de Black Metal Folk nous provenant tout droit de Vilnius en Lituanie (seconde patrie de Bertrand Cantat) et en activite depuis 1992. Si a leurs debuts, le groupe exercait un Death Metal brut de decoffrage, le combo d’Europe du Nord-est a tres vite vire vers du bon vieux Black Paien. En effet, etant donne que leurs themes traitent de guerres ancestrales, de legendes, de mythes et de vieilles croyances lituaniennes, il va de soi que le style convenait mieux a des sonorites Pagan que Death. Dans la lignee du precedent album Iš Kartos I Karta, ce quatrieme volet de la saga OBTEST, Gyvybes Medis, est en plus edite par le tres bon label local Ledo Takas Records proposant toujours des groupes soignes et prometteurs (DISSIMULATION, URSKUMUG, LUCTUS) specialise dans le black Pagan et chroniques sur M-I.
Etendue sur neuf titres pour une duree de quarante-cinq minutes, OBTEST affiche sans vergogne des melodies et des rythmes de bon gout. Ils sont doues les Lituaniens. Ainsi, on decouvre des melodies divertissantes, delicates et recherchees, tandis que les riffs de guitares a la fois mobiles et agites affichent des affinites tantot Heavy tantot Thrash, le tout agremente d’un reel esprit Folk local qui colle parfaitement avec les themes developpes si chers aux musiciens lituaniens qui pour paraitre plus authentiques ont pris le parti de chanter dans leur langue maternelle. Les compositions de OBTEST se definissent ainsi par l’alliance entre melodies lancinantes et incursions diserts et attrayants comme sur des morceaux tels que dans les cavalcades de «Vedlys», dans la vitesse d’execution rythmique de «Sviesa» ou bien avec l’aura folk de «Gyvybes Medis», fort entrainante et dansante. En outre, le combo lituanien parvient en plus a enjoliver ces titres de soli limpides, expeditifs et etincelants. On retiendra egalement des titres tout aussi interessants que «Azuolas» ou OBTEST devoile ses talents de maitres Thrash du fin fond des forets baltiques.
OBTEST ou une nouvelle facon de raconter la Lituanie a travers ces legendes et histoires ancestrales grace au Metal Folk. Un groupe vraiment solide et majestueux dont le talent touchant ne pourra que ravir les amateurs de Pagan Folk. La Lituanie, l’autre pays nordique du Pagan du XXIeme siecle. [3,5 / 5]

Du haut de ses 16 ans d’existence OBTEST nous offre une nouvelle offrande sur un nouveau label. En effet c’est Osmose qui s’occupe de la carriere du groupe. Peut-etre que cela va enfin se stabiliser pour le groupe car les labels il connait ! Enfin cela dépendra des sacro saintes ventes… Osmose faisant une sélection a ce niveau malheureusement (Temple Of Baal ne me contredira pas sur ce coup…).
Rentrons dans le vif du sujet apres cette parenthese. OBTEST nous présente ici 9 nouveaux titres s’inscrivant dans la lignée du précédent. Ces titres sentent bons les années 80s avec une base Heavy Metal tres prononcée et des relents Speed/Thrash du meilleur effet. Le tout est d’une grande musicalité avec les guitares tres affutées, des changements de rythme permanents, une voix entrainante et des refrains bétons. Les titres s’enchainent sans répit, restent en mémoire et me semblent taillés pour le live (dont le groupe est friand). L’album se conclut par une magnifique plage instrumentale qui donne envie de remettre l’album au début. Tous les ingrédients sont réunis pour faire de « Gyvybės Medis » (Arbre de vie) une réussite marquant un nouveau palier dans la progression du groupe. A noter aussi une trace folklorique rattachant le groupe a son identité culturelle, a son passé paien. Je suppose que les paroles sont aussi tres influencées par ces racines paiennes, cela transpire a travers les titres des chansons. Le fait aussi que le chant soit en Lithuanien renforce cette identité.
Cet album dispose d’une production énorme et si OBTEST a quitté le berceau protecteur du label Lithuanien de son manager (qui cependant sort l'album en version picture LP et en cd digibook A5) c’est effectivement pour s’ouvrir un peu plus sur le marché mondial avec une distribution a la hauteur de ses ambitions. Un changement dans la continuité dont tout le monde devrait sortir gagnant: le label, le groupe et le consommateur.

Gli amanti del pagan/folk possono gioire. Gli Obtest sono tornati, e lo fanno come di consueto in grande stile. Difatti dopo sedici anni di carriera e una serie di valide uscite culminate con due ottimi prodotti che hanno catapultato la band tra piu seguite del settore (quali Auka Seniems Dievams del 2001 e Is Kartos I Karta del 2005), i nostri provano la definitiva consacrazione. Per l'occasione li ritroviamo accasati con la prestigiosa Osmose Productions, etichetta francese che sicuramente contribuira alla causa, conferendo maggiore visibilita ai lituani.
Gyvybes Medis, questo il nome del neonato, centra l'obbiettivo non solo confermando il trand positivo, bensi ponendosi come apice discografico del sestetto. Rispetto al recente passato troviamo poche novita: solito groviglio di influenze, le quali svariano dal black sinfonico/melodico, passando per il thrash classico, fino a toccare l'heavy old school. Forse quest'ultima inclinazione sembra aver acquistato maggiore vigore, tant'e che il corposo riffing recupera tutta l'energia e l'ecletticita del metallo tradizionale. Con questo non voglio certo far intendere che il platter suona vetusto; difatti la varianza di suoni profusi, espressi dalla consueta moltitudine di strumenti, accompagnano in modo meraviglioso la potenza delle chitarre. Il tutto viene reso alla perfezione da una produzione a dir poco perfetta, indubbiamente la migliore di sempre per i lituani. Durante le nove tracce proposte non si avverte mai il minimo calo, pur essendo queste cantate in lingua madre: patos alle stelle, ma anche goliardia epica da osteria, atta a ricalcare la tipica atmosfera iconografica fantasy e soprattutto confacente nel smorzare la solennita dei toni meno scanzonati. L'ascoltatore viene catapultato in un mondo perduto nello spazio e nel tempo, coinvolto suo malgrado in un gioco di umori abilmente plasmato tra l'incedere delle tenebre e l'allegria dei canti bardici. C'e da perdersi nella fruibile magniloquenza (permettetemi il gioco di parole) delle note di brani come Apeigos e Sakalo Vaikai, oppure la strumentale Ikaitai cosi come la title-track, tutte dense di spunti e preziosismi stupefacenti.
Proprio a voler essere pignoli, si avverte la mancanza di una voce dalla timbrica un pizzico piu melodica, capace di sposare determinate scelte stilistiche e fronteggiare la natura rude delle altre liriche. Poco male: un dettaglio che non toglie minimo lustro a Gyvybes Medis, album della definitiva consacrazione per Obtest e quindi un must per il genere. [80 / 100]

Créé en 1992 et originaire de la Lituanie, le groupe black/pagan/folk metal Obtest a mis en vente son quatrieme album en avril 2008, "Gyvybes Medis". Plus mélodique et folk que l'album précédent, "Iš Kartos I Karta", Obtest garde tout de meme la rapidité black metal sur la piece "Vedlys". Par contre, la combinaison avec le style folk/pagan se fait encore mieux et la structure sont plus percutantes.
Lors de la sortie du disque précédent, la langue utilisée m'avait surpris. Il chante en Lituanien, ce qui est plutot rare dans la scene metal. Dans les autres langues, nous avons surtout entendu le suédois, le finlandais, l'allemand ou le russe, mais nous explorons encore la finesse des autres pays. Sur cet album, le message passe bien et la langue n'est vraiment pas un obstacle. La meilleure production aide grandement Obtest a faire connaitre sa sonorité festive. Je dois l'avouer, l'impression du ton festif est beaucoup plus présent, puisqu'il s'inspire peut-etre sans le vouloir du mouvement lancé par Eluveitie, Alestorm, Moonsorrow, Ensiferum. Cependant, Obtest n'est pas un nouveau venu sur la scene metal, alors je fais majoritairement référence aux influences de cette nouvelle sortie.
D'ailleurs, vous retrouvez cette ambiance festive pagan/folk metal sur la piece, "Sakalo vaikai", dont le début glorieux est fort efficace. Au vocal, Baalberith apporte son influence black metal qui s'exploite a merveille avec les choeurs. Bref, Obtest ne s'est pas totalement orienté vers des abus de mélodies, mais il utilise beaucoup plus sa fougue épique. La piece instrumentale "Įkaitai" termine le disque en beauté avec un beau travail dans ses mélodies heavy/power metal.
En général, Obtest s'ajoute dans les ligues majeures avec la sortie de "Gyvybes Medis". Il se glisse tres bien dans la vague actuelle du pagan/folk metal, mais il ne néglige pas pour autant ce qui l'a fait connaitre du succes. Une langue différente, un style accrocheur, bref un bon petit album dans le genre. [8,5 / 10]

Der ehemalige Ostblock zeigt immer deutlicher, welche Metalkraft in ihm steckt. Obwohl die fünf Litauer schon seit 1992 unter dem Namen Obtest Musik machen, musste man die ersten Releases eher in die 0815- Black Metal Schublade stecken.
Durch irgendeine unbekannte Inspiration haben sich Obtest nun voll und ganz dem Pagan Metal gewidmet – und das ist auch gut so. Auf ihrem neuen Album performen sie neun eindrucksvolle Songs in ihrer Landesprache. Viel zu mäkeln gibt es eigentlich nicht. Die Band besinnt sich musikalisch auf das Wesentliche: Sänger, Bassist, zwei Gitarristen und Drummer. Trotz Folk-Anleihen wurde auf andere Instrumente oder sonstiges Gedudel, mit dem uns genreähnliche Vertreter oft penetrieren, konsequent verzichtet. Der Musik tut das nur gut. Sänger Baalberith passt sehr gut in seine neue Rolle als heimatverliebter Growler und bringt die Texte mehr als überzeugend rüber - egal ob gegrowlt, clean oder choral performed. Dem ordnen sich die Instrumente ganz klar unter. Das Schlagzeug ist zwar allgegenwärtig, spielt sich aber nicht in der Vordergrund. Die Gitarren brechen häufig zu brutalen Riffs aus, oft gefolgt von dem ein oder anderen Solo. Insgesamt ist "Gyvybės Medis" äußerst abwechslungsreich geworden und bietet dem Hörer auf jeden Fall Unterhaltung. Da die Texte auf litauisch gesungen werden, kann man nur Anhand der englischen Songübersetzungen des Backprints erahnen, über was der Vocalist gerade singt. Das schadet aber der Atmosphäre in keinster Weise. [8,5 / 10]

Ex Eastern Block shows more and more powerful Metal power. Although this five Lithuanian make music since 1992 as Obtest first release is something like standard Black Metal.
We don´t know why, but Obtest applys oneself to Pagan Metal. And it is a good decission. On new album they perform songs in national language. Nothing to bash in generell. Band concentrates on the essence: singer, bassist, two guitars and drums. They use Folk parts but concentrate on their music and do not penetrate with other instruments or jingle-jangle like other bands in this genre. Music profits. Singer Baalberith is the perfect choice as own´s land loving growler. He transports the lycrics convincing - growling, clean or chorus. Instruments are not the focus. Drums are omnipresent, but not in foreground. Guitars play hard riffs - followed by solo. "Gyvybės Medis" varies and offers perfect entertainment. To know what vocalist is singing you need the English translation from song book, but that is no problem to keep the positive atmosphere. [8,5 / 10]

Attivi dal lontano 1992 e con all'attivo diversi album, ecco la nuova fatica dei lituani Obtest, questa volta sotto Osmose Productions e non piu con la loro connazionale Ledo Takas Records, un'occasione quindi per riuscire a farsi conoscere meglio grazie all'ottima distribuzione della storica etichetta transalpina.
Gli Obtest si inseriscono in quel filone, che ora va tanto di moda, del folk pagan metal, logicamente essendo attivi dal 1992 non si puo certo dire che i nostri siano dei novellini, e lo dimostrano con questo buon "Gyvybes Medis".
Nella musica degli Obtest non e presente nessun strumento tradizionale ecc... , il sound della band e un mix di black metal melodico, thrash e classico heavy, proprio da quest'ultimo i nostri sviluppano il loro roccioso riffing, dove non mancano anche degli ottimi solos di tradizione classica.
Il disco suona abbastanza epico e allegro, nel suo complesso risulta gradevole e di facile ascolto, sicuramente tra le molte uscite in questo settore gli Obtest dovrebbero essere giustamente notati, siamo lontani pero dai picchi raggiunti dai Moonsorrow o dagli unici e inimitabili Primordial, la musica degli Obtest per quel che mi riguarda e troppo solare e allegrotta, troppe band poi suonano alla stessa maniera, anche se, ripeto, gli Obtest sono meglio di molti nomi piu famosi, anche grazie all'esperienza maturata in tutti questi anni.
Veramente buona la produzione, cristallina e potente, quanto di meglio si puo pretendere da un disco di questo tipo.
In definitiva gli Obtest si dimostrano una buona band, ma non dei veri fuoriclasse, se siete amanti di queste sonorita date un ascolto a "Gyvybes medis" che e un buon disco. [7 / 10]

The Lithuanian Obtest is one of the most original "pagan black" metal bands. The 17 years old horde has an unique sound that makes them instantly recognizable. And nowadays this is a great virtue, so we should really appreciate such bands. In the course of the long years they released only 3 albums so they aren't amongst the most prolific groups, but at least if they release a new footage it becomes an event. It happened the same way with their fourth album called "Gyvybės Medis". One thing that makes the band unique is that they sing on their own language which gives an unbeliveable atmosphere to the songs, but that's not all since Baalberith's instantly recognizable, characteristic voice is one of the unique style marks. Of course the list's still not empty, because the songs' nature and the guitars are also playing important roles in the unmatched musical world of Obtest.
Those who haven't heard the band's music I may advise (if I'd really force myself to find a similar group) Skyforger. Still it's true that they use more folk influences which is not really true on Obtest. If you like the tone is totally on the stringed instruments. We can hear a so diverse and nimble that is simply awesome, and the guitarists Sadlave and Enrikas Slavinskis are not just exceling at the folk-like harmonies but a whole chapter could be written of their solo-works.
As for the songs there are a lot of significant apices. Like the opening song, a bit sadder, instantly fascinating "Apeigos", the measured fast, also excellently guitarred title giving song or the happy "Sakalo Vaikai", but we can mention here the acoustic starter "Geležinis Vilkas", not to mention the closing instrumental "Įkaitai". Of course there are more brutal songs like the pair of "Vedlys" and "Šviesa". Mostly the first one is the faster but it excellently countered by the melodic solos. These songs are proveing that the guitarists can play the faster parts perfectly too.
I'd mention the cover of the disc that is beautiful beyond others. Which is a worthy one for this magnificent album. But it is also a part of the truth that we aren't talking about a hit-band. Those who expect immedieately learnable songs are searching in the wrong place for a long time. Obtest has got it's own mood, it's own little world, which's sometimes hard to understand but if it grabs you once it will never let you go.
I don't think that I have to say anything else about the newest creation of Obtest. Those who are a bit more opened than others and are interested in a band with an own character and unique feel should start to search and get to know of the best band of the Lithuanians. [9 / 10]

When I would dig deep in my memory, I can vaguely remember having heard this band on a compilation somewhere and that they used to play black metal at that time. The three full-length albums that this band has on its name are unknown to me. But I’ve been told that with each record they more and more put the black metal sound behind and get closer to the pagan heavy metal approach!
While I listen to the fourth album ‘Gyvybes Medis’ (translated: ‘Tree Of Life’), I can agree with in the above-mentioned developments. Although I must say that, especially in the first half of the album, the black metal influences are clearly audible. Especially during the first two tracks I sometimes have to think of a band like Ancient in their early days, which must have something to do with the clean heavy metal solos. When it comes to riffing the black metal sound is clearly present, which also goes for the typical vocals. The vocals vary from black metal screams to powerful Viking-like, somewhat screaming, community singing. All this together makes the album sound highly variable.
Personally I favour the more black/Viking metal oriented songs, simply because the atmosphere appeals to me more. But in the end it doesn’t make any difference what you want to call it or whatever styles the band plays, because the whole is presented so damned convincingly and each song is a complete piece on its own. This band has the gift to balance simple song structures and melodies in a way that they don’t sound simple or complex, and to sound melodic without keyboards without sounding soft at the same time. All the nine track on the record are catchy and you can easily listen to it twice in a row without getting bored! The excellent musical and instrumental skills of the members leave no place for discussion and the clear production sees to it that the details don’t get lost and everything is perfectly balanced. Another important point is definitely that you cannot compare this band directly to others and it’s impossible to out a stamp on their style.
Everything together makes ‘Gyvybes Medis’ and excellent metal album that would surely apply to a broad audience and one that is definitely worth hearing. [82 / 100]

Die litauische Band Obtest wurde 1992 gegründet, zur Zeit des Black Metals in Skandinavien, und Bands wie Enslaved, Mayhem und Darkthrone inspirierten die damals noch jungen Musiker. Doch Obtest waren nie in eine Sparte zu schubladisieren, sie bewegten sich immer zwischen diversen Genres des Metals. Die neuste Scheibe der Litauen ist wohl wieder näher dem Heavy Metal, nicht ohne schnelle Riffs und treibendem Rhythmus. Folk-Instrumente fehlen gänzlich. Die Texte aber, alle auf Litauisch, sind definitiv dem Heidenmetal zuzuordnen. Sie handelten immer schon von Krieg, Heidentum und mythologischen und geschichtlichen Themen. «Gyvybės medis», Titel der aktuellen Platte, bedeutet Lebensbaum, was mit der Weltesche in der germanischen Mythologie gleichzusetzen ist. Auch andere Titel wie «Rites» und «Oak» verdeutlichen dies. Obwohl die CD mit mitreissender Rhythmik und doch melodiösen Parts bestückt ist, wirkt sie im Ganzen leider etwas eintönig, die kratzige Stimme des Sängers monoton. Einzig die fremdländische Sprache versetzt der Band einen eigenen Touch.

Please forgive me for being as enthusiastic as a small kid playing with his new toy but I can’t avoid considering the amount of time that a new record wouldn’t move my ass in such a way like “Gyvybės Medis” is at the moment! To tell the truth this sounds almost as fresh to me as “Extreme Aggression”, “Agent Orange” or “Kings of Metal” back in late 80s, so you can see how deep and entertaining Obtest managed to release a killer album!
Entertaining is most likely the best word to wrap this Lithuanian quintet into a category or one single descriptive word or whatever. The band was formed back in 1992 and after a raw inspired start the group has been evolving into their recent groundbreaking personal form... Imagine a layer of traditional heavy metal blended with a good dose of Lithuanian folklore a hint of death metal and a bit of pagan black metal... thus reaching into what Obtest is! There are two or three things that truly stand out on this band, the first one is the Lithuanian lyrics giving a strong touch of almost exotic raw individuality, the second one the strong guitars with a powerful distortion (some of the leads are so impressive that look from outer of this world) and the third one the catchy song arrangements directed to beer drinkers (laughs). The production courtesy of Hertz Studio in Poland is definitely also a plus since without this songs like ‘Apeigos’, ‘Sviesa’, ‘Sakalo Vaikai’, ‘Azuolas’, ‘Tai Ne Pabaiga’ or the instrumental closing track ‘Ikaitai’ wouldn’t have the same crystal clear yet fearless and raging fury aspect perfectly captured on that famed studio. Its impressive the whole sense of unity that all band members transmit with their playing, I mean there is space
for everything killer guitar solos, chorus, melody, fast raging horse ridding moments, slower parts, acoustic moments, diversified tempo changes, raspy vocals, pure heavy metal, folk
inspired moments... you name it!
Whatever crosses your mind Obtest is playing here! In the end I guess these guys now will have a hard time surpassing this new album which for me is already nominated for my top of best 2008 albums just after the first listening! [9 / 10]

Du XIIIeme siecle a la conversion du prince Jogaila (Jagellon) en 1386, les Lituaniens ont été l'un des peuples les plus puissants en Europe du Nord-Est. Attachés a leur religion traditionnelle, ils régnaient sur d'importantes parties de l'Ukraine ou de la Biélorussie, et résistaient avec entetement aux invasions lancées par l'Ordre Teutonique, congrégation de moine-chevaliers allemands décris comme particulierement machiavéliques...
Ca, c'était le Moyen-Age. Et de nos jours, des groupes comme Obtest reprennent le flambeau, utilisant non plus des chevaux et des armes, mais un pagan metal tout aussi efficace pour revendiquer l'héritage paien de leur pays. Ayant largement convaincu, ils sont meme repérés par le label francais Osmose Productions, sur qui est sortit cet album, Gyvybes Medis (Tree of Life). Passés dans la cour des tres grands du pagan metal, ils devaient confirmer leur efficacité, apres le redoutable Auka Seniems Deviams, considéré comme l'un des chef-d'oeuvre du metal de l'Est. Une fois placés sur le trone, de quoi sont-ils encore capables ?
Premiere constatation, l'or ne les a pas corrompu. Le son est nettement meilleur, plus lourd, plus massif tout en restant clair, il permet de bien mettre en avant la technique de jeu, plus élaborée. La batterie sonne de facon nettement plus naturelle, et les grattes ont une tonalité assez variée: parfois plutot aigues, d'autres fois bien chaleureuses, batailleuses comme dans du death épique. L'essentiel reste dans la tradition obtestienne, c'est a dire qu'on a affaire a un metal assez original: une bonne base heavy, quelques passages plus black (mais beaucoup moins qu'aux débuts du groupe!), 2-3 influences thrash voire oil! (mais c'est moins évident que sur Auka Seniems Dievams), et plusieurs riffs qui rappellent quand meme des mélodies folkloriques nordisantes... la base musicale ressemble a Skyforger, d'autant que la voix se situe aussi dans un registre clairement plus "viking/pagan" que black ou death: elle n'est pas criée, pas claire non plus, mais reste assez profonde. Le rendu est tres bon. On peut aussi penser a des groupes comme l'Ancient Rites de la derniere époque, surtout pour ce type de chant, la musique entre black mélodique et heavy épique, et le concept historique. Par contre attention: Obtest est 100% metal: ne vous attendez pas a entendre une touche de synthé ou de flute chez ces Lituaniens! Toutefois, un peu de guitare acoustique se fait entendre sur "Gelezinis Vilkas", un morceau qui relate la légende voulant que le grand duc Gediminas aurait vu un loup de fer en reve, ce qui le pousse a fonder Vilnius, destinée a régner sur la Lituanie. Un rapprochement peut-etre fait avec les derniers albums d'Absurd, qui lui aussi, privilégie les instruments metal et une musique a la croisée du black, du heavy et de la oil!. Le chant étant toutefois nettement moins dérangé et l'ambiance beaucoup plus sereine que chez ces barbares tudesques...
Voila le décor: les morceaux se font parfois calmes, comme le titre d'ouverture, ou plus guerriers, a l'instar du troisieme titre. On remarque que les guitaristes aiment bien les soli, comme on en entend dans presque chaque morceaux; le titre éponyme en est meme rempli, et avec sa longue intro assez planante, il pourrait etre l'un des meilleurs titres d'Obtest, s'il était vraiment facile de les départager. Car, l'album étant tres homogene, il est difficile de faire ressortir un titre au dessus des autres: tout est bon, mais il n'y a pas de pures perles comme pouvait l'etre "Anapus Nemuno" sur l'album bleu. Qu'a cela ne tienne, puisqu'on s'amuse sur tous les morceaux, qui sont vraiment tres accrocheurs, peut-etre plus mélodiques que purement guerrier ou jouissifs. On est pas chez Dub Buk ou Absurd, donc on reste un peu plus sage: le sabre est plus souvent rangé a la ceinture, et les guerriers lituaniens sont un peu moins remuants que cosaques ou les lansquenets qui tiennent de héros pour les groupes précités...
N'allez pourtant pas croire que ca manque de burnes: les riffs sont acérés, le son est bien costaux, le batteur tape fort et bien, le bassiste aime bien montrer qu'il compte un peu dans la bande, et le chanteur n'en est pas a son premier essai. Simplement que, ayant déja bien bataillé dans le passé, les Lituaniens sont un peu moins enragés que certains de leurs confreres. Leur musique se fait plus épique, plus sereine et mélodique que violente et sanguinaire. Approche qui ne manque pas d'originalité, dans un milieu ou la course a la brutalité est souvent l'unique raison d'etre, meme chez les barbares en armure. Sachant manier les leads, le soli et la mélodie, Obtest préfere nous montrer une face plus calme, plus tournée d'ailleurs vers l'évocation des mythes paiens de leurs ancetres que leurs prouesses militaires... Et pour rassurer ceux qui ne jurent que par les tetes plantées sur des lances, je dirais qu'il est plus aisé de convaincre de cette facon. N'hésitant pas a dégainer quand il le faut, a monter le tempo et passer en mode "charge épique" pour foncer sur l'ennemi, ces guerriers peuvent se faire reconnaitre un peu partout en Europe comme dignes représentants de leurs glorieux ancetres. En attendant, je considere ce Gyvybes Medis comme l'une des meilleures sorties de ces dernieres années, toutes catégories comprises...

I knew very little about this Lithuanian act before I got this promo, besides the fact that I had them listed as friends on Myspace. Signed for a long time to Ledo Takas Records, home of Urskumug, Obtest will be distributed worldwide by French label Osmose Productions.
These guys are known for being veteran Pagan Metal musicians. Cyvybės Medis is their brand new release, and it was completely written in their native tongue. The themes covered are ancient mythologies as well as personal views and reflections on the modern world. Musically, we have a well recorded and produced album of mostly upbeat Viking/Pagan Metal. Their music is kicking, a bit catchy and epic. Although not as intense and dark as what I usually listen to, Gyvybės Medis is far from cheesy. On the other hand, I would have wished for something more varied and less on the fast line. Many of the songs are built on the same frame, and I guess the guys played it safe by using a formula that has worked well for them. Very good guitar work can be heard on this disc, with cool solos on every composition. Opener "Rites" contains all the great ingredients mentioned. One will have to wait up until track #7, "The Wolf of Steel" to hear some pleasant acoustic guitars. Closing track, "Hostages", is the only instrumental here, and is where to look for some thrilling guitar playing.
An epic, melodic and well done piece of Pagan/Viking Metal, but lacking variation. [4 / 5]

Noe litt utenom det vanlige.
Det er svært sjelden at det dumper folkmetal ned i kassen min (Det kan jeg vel takke Yngve for) (Stygt mulig det ja :) Yj) . Sjeldnere er det at bandet jeg skal anmelde er fra osteuropa. Faktisk tror jeg ikke at jeg tidligere har skrevet om noe band fra Litauen.
Ofte er det spennende med band som velger å synge på morsmålet. Hos Obtest kunne det helt sikkert også vært slik, hadde det ikke vært for at stemmen til denne Baalberith er som hore en hvilken som helst europeisk landeveisrover etter mengder med borst. Det er rett og slett skrekkelig å lytte til, og det odelegger svaert mye av den totale opplevelsen.
Nå er ikke musikken så altfor spennende heller; folk og powermetal – av midtempo variant – i stort sett samme takt, som tidvis brytes opp med noen småfriske gitarsoloer. Foruten låten Apeigos er dette direkte kjedelig, og de knappe tre og forti minuttene det varer virker som en evighet. [4 / 10]

Complimenti ai lituani Obtest. Dopo piu di dieci anni di gavetta sono riusciti ad emergere e lo fanno in maniera un po' inaspettata. Si, perché a dare un grosso supporto al gruppo baltico e la Osmose Prod., label che da anni sembrava aver perso interesse nel filone pagan metal, piu interessata com'era ai gruppi marci e brutali di death/black. Gli Obtest, dopo aver pubblicato una corposa discografia principalmente per l'etichetta connazionale Ledo Takas Rec., giungono al grande appuntamento con un album che non stravolge lo stile della band. Gli Obtest hanno nel proprio sound quel fascino un po' retro e un po' grezzo che c'e nel DNA di tutte le band proveniente dall'Europa dell'Est, il loro pagan metal e infatti ancora piuttosto violento, in cui si mescola una buona dose di death e black metal ma anche di thrash, senza dimenticare qualche altra influenza proveniente da vari generi musicali, folk compreso. Al contrario di molte pagan metal band che con il passare degli anni ammorbidiscono il proprio sound per approdare ad uno stile piu lento, solenne ed epico, gli Obtest continuano per la loro strada macinando metallo pesante ed estremo. Il tipo di epicita che incarna la musica degli Obtest e particolare, un tipo di epicita che magari il grande pubblico non e solito ascoltare e assimilare. Per questo motivo l'album potra risultare un po' indigesto a diversi amanti del filone pagan/viking metal. Alfieri della storia dei Paei Baltici assieme ai lettoni Skyforger, gli Obtest oggi come oggi sono tra le band di punta di tutto il movimento pagan metal non solo baltico grazie alla loro costanza negli anni e alla bravura nel saper comporre album piu che discreti. Se pero la Osmose Prod. spera con gli Obtest di aver scovato gli Enslaved degli anni '90, allora i calcoli sono da rifare. [6,5 / 10]

Met voorganger ‘Is Kartos I Karta’ heeft het Lithouwse Obtest geen windeieren gelegd, want ze zijn van het heel kleine Ledo Takas-label naar de al wat grotere stal van Osmose verhuisd. De heathen black war metal heeft op ‘Gyvybes Medis’ (of ‘Tree Of Life’) wat plaats geruimd voor heathen metal met een prograndje aan en de productie is nog beter (Hertz studios in Polen). Hoewel dit voor ondergetekende nooit alledaagse kost zal zijn, bespeur ik vooruitgang in de nummers. Teksten zijn nog steeds in de moedertaal met Engelse vertalingen in het booklet. Voor liefhebbers van pagan/folk/heathen metal.

Obtest continue son bonhomme de chemin, trois ans apres "Is Kartos I Karta" (qui avaient déja fait des émules sur VS, bisous a nos invités disparus). Alors que s'est-il passé chez le groupe lituanien depuis la derniere interview? Ils ont fait résonner leur pagan vitaminé en Europe (mais pas en France, sniff), ont traversé l'Atlantique pour apporter la bonne parole aux US, réédité leurs démos avec le MLP "Pries Audra" en 2006 ainsi que leur premier album "Tukstantmetis" en 2007. Plus impactant pour nos bouilles franchouillardes, le combo est désormais signé chez Osmose Productions pour le monde (hors Etats Baltes, ou Ledo Takas reste leur label). Bref, formé il y a plus de quinze ans, Obtest avance et ce n'est pas le récent enregistrement au Hertz Studio du dernier album qui peut me faire mentir.
Néanmoins le monde du metal européen a un peu changé en trois ans. Le folk/viking/pagan metal connait un effet de mode indéniable et les sorties utiles ou carrément dispensables se bousculent les lecteurs de nos chaines hifi. L'auditorat, désormais plus que jamais habitué aux sonorités pagan et aux langues exotiques, va-t-il encore succomber aux sirenes des vieux de la vieille de Vilnius? Obtest va-t-il résister au virage plus sombre que proposent certains groupes de la grande famille pagan, virage qu'ont pris Moonsorrow ou Thyrfing avec leurs récentes productions, culbutant le coté bon vivant d'un folk trop souvent enclavé dans les morceaux a taper la chopine? L'inflation du prix de la biere dans les salles peut-il etre un frein a la conquete du monde? Que de questions…
J'avais completement craqué pour Obtest a la découverte de "Is Kartos I Karta" et j'appréhendais un prévisible retour de boomerang avec ce nouvel opus. Force est de constater qu'il n'a pas eu lieu. "Gyvybes Medis" utilise les memes recettes qui m'ont fait chuter du tabouret trois ans plus tot, mais en mieux. Maturant encore son pagan melé de speed/thrash/heavy et déroulé a la vitesse de l'éclair, Obtest parvient a garder l'esprit et a modifier la forme pour gagner en efficacité. "Gyvybes Medis" s'avere plus varié dans les tempos que son prédécesseur, en gardant la hargne et la fraicheur ultra Kiss Cool qui donne immédiatement envie de mettre le pied sur le rebord de la fenetre et de croiser les bras face au vent pour narguer les éléments (et le gros voisin tout nu avec qui vous avez un vis-a-vis).
Des "Apeigos" qui ouvre l'album (ca veut dire "Rites" et non apéro), je suis perdu au milieu des arpeges sur fond de double du couplet, du theme mélodique tout en mélancolie du refrain et des rythmiques speed/thrash qui envoient grave le bouzin. Il devient impossible de décrocher jusqu'au bout de l'album et son final instrumental "Ikaitai" superbe et tout en nostalgie. Alors certes, tout cela ne va pas changer l'avis négatif de ceux qui avaient détesté "Is Kartos I Karta", ceux qui entendaient du métal naif porté sur les génériques de dessins animés (et qui généralement n'écoutent pas de folk, sans aucune critique). Mais pour ceux qui sont tombés dans la marmite avec le précédent opus, c'est feu vert assuré avec celui-ci. Ce nouvel album garde la meme saveur et les memes atouts "en mieux" que son prédécesseur, en proposant un pas de plus autant conceptuellement que musicalement. Je précise que les compos ont été maturées entre 2002 et 2007, Obtest prenant largement son temps avant de pondre un titre, ce qui ajoute une homogénéité notable dans la discographie du groupe sur sa derniere période.
Il reste un écueil dans ce tableau lumineux: le titre "Sakalo Vaikai" qui avait créé des frayeurs en tant qu'extrait. Il est clairement le plus faible de l'album et fait pale figure a coté des autres brulots avec son solo de guitar hero et son lead mélo en continu qui fait meme plus penser au générique de Melrose Place qu'a autre chose (c'est pas moi qui regardait cette série!!). Mais ne vous arretez pas a cela, le reste de l'opus est plus sombre et dans la lignée de ce a quoi le groupe nous a habitués: enjoué, tonique, porté par la voix déchirée de Baalberith.
L'enregistrement au polonais Hertz Studio a également eu un impact plus que positif sur le groupe, lui permettant d'améliorer grandement sa production, tout en conservant la clarté nécessaire a l'écoute de morceaux tres dynamiques. Les références du studio (Abused Majesty, Crionics, Hate, Vesania) sont a meme de vous laisser imaginer la puissance de feu finale, le tout restant proche des sonorités du métal traditionnel qu'Obtest affectionne. Le son de batterie a notamment gagné en naturel, faisant oublier le coté un peu synthétique du précédent forfait. En clair, ca poutre sévere.
Le biscuit chocolaté s'est également payé l'édition limitée chez Ledo Takas. Outre le poster A2 dédicacé, l'édition se présente sous la forme d'un livre A5. Apres la présentation paysage et orangé de "Is Kartos I Karta", "Gyvybes Medis" est plus sobre (et mis en page en portrait). L'ensemble des photos et des textes sont en noir et blanc, avec une qualité de papier similaire au "Othodoxyn" d'Arkhon Infaustus (pour vous donner un ordre d'idée). Mais le contenu ne fait pas dans la folie et s'oriente clairement vers une présentation "livre", entre une dizaine de pages de textes en lituanien puis les textes de l'album. Sans etre indispensable, voila une maniere agréable et sympathique de feuilleter les paroles en lituanien et leurs traductions en anglais tout en écoutant l'album.
Alternant entre titres plus mid tempo et morceaux de bravoure portés par des leads ou des solos tres mélodiques, Obtest chante son amour de la nature et sa perception de l'Arbre-Monde. L'arbre grandit, y compris dans leur logo, car le groupe évolue au fil des ans et se bonifie. Hormis un titre plutot moyen qui gache un peu la fete, Obtest livre un opus intense et ravageur qui fait fierement suite a "Is Kartos I Karta" et qui démontre encore la personnalité unique du groupe lituanien sur la scene pagan/folk. Plus qu'a espérer qu'on les voit un jour sur scene, nom di diou!!! [17,5 / 20]

Es hat wohl mal eine Zeit gegeben, als OBTEST richtig finsteren Black Metal spielten. Auch wenn ich mir das schwer vorstellen kann, wenn ich dem durchdachten, melodischen, temporeichen und erfreulich eigenwilligen Pagan Metal der Litauer lausche. Das muss wohl in den frühen 90ern gewesen sein, was vom heutigen Standpunkt aus in der schnelllebigen Musikgeschichte schon eine Weile her ist. Fast ebenso weit sind OBTEST von dem Stil entfernt, mit dem sie einst ihre Karriere begannen.
Von finsterer Stimmung ist hier keine Spur und Monotonie ist auch nicht angesagt. "Gyvybes Medis" ist unglaublich abwechslungsreich, mit guten Idee gespickt und strotzt nur so vor Spielfreude. In den Riffs bieten OBTEST erstaunlich oft Anlehnungen an klassischen Heavy Metal und tummeln sich dabei mit Vorliebe im hohen Geschwindigkeitsbereich. Damit bringen sie ein Fundament zusammen, das es ihnen erlaubt, fast alles zu machen. Erstaunlich ist dabei vor allem, dass man die Musik noch immer zweifelsfrei als heidnischen Metal identifizieren kann.
Vielleicht kommt mir die Musik auch nur deshalb so großartig vor, weil sich in diesem Genre zu viele Bands herumtreiben, deren Keyboard-Geschnörkel und kitschige Ohrwurm-Melodien nach Plastik klingen? Nein, obwohl OBTEST im krassen Gegensatz zu solchen Vertretern stehen, ist das nicht der Grund. Sie sind einfach verdammt gut, in dem was sie machen. Dass es schwer fällt Bands zu finden, die Ähnliches zusammenbauen, unterstreicht die Leistung lediglich.
OBTEST schreiben Hymnen ohne Pathos, machen gute Laune, ohne betont fröhlich zu klingen und sind eingängig, ohne dass man mitgrölen könnte. Diese Litauer sind einfach pausenlos interessant und vermeiden dabei auch noch alles, woran ich persönlich mich bei Pagan Metal stören kann. Wer sich ein Bild von den Qualitäten des Albums machen möchte, hört sich am besten gleich den Titeltrack an und lässt sich einfach überzeugen. Selbst an den Klang der ausschließlich litauischen Lyrics habe ich mich schnell gewöhnen können. [9 / 10]

Veel bekende bands komen er niet uit de Baltische staten, bij mij houdt het met Skyforger, Manatark en Neglected Fields al op wat betreft namen die in me op komen. Maar ik kan er weer eentje aan toevoegen: Obtest is de naam en is afkomstig uit Vilnius, Litouwen. Gyvybes Medis is zelfs al hun vierde langspeler, maar de band kan nu eindelijk ook in de rest van Europa een bekende naam worden, aangezien het gerenommeerde Osmose de band onlangs getekend heeft.
Ooit begonnen als rauwe black metal band zijn de heren langzaam opgeschoven richting een wat toegankelijker, meer folk-geinspireerd pagan metal geluid. De songs hebben een duidelijke kop en staart en staan bol van de melodieuze riffs en stoere, heroieke uitspattingen, waarbij vaak het refrein centraal staat. Overigens is het refrein in het openingsnummer Apeigos (Rites) zelfs een van de betere die ik ooit in dit genre gehoord heb! Maar ook kan de band in een nummer als Sviesa (Het Licht) zelfs behoorlijk stevig uit de hoek komen middels een bijna Testament-achtige openingsriff, iets wat wat mij betreft erg mooi aansluit op het geheel. Maar de typische melodie blijft de gehele plaat aanwezig, is het niet op de voorgrond, dan wel verstopt in de diepere onderlagen.
Zanger Baalberith zit qua stem in dat typische Oost-Europa straatje en klinkt een beetje als een kruising tussen Skyforger's Latvian Riflemen en Iuvenes' album Riddle of Steel, een rauw schreeuwende manier van zingen, maar met een randje melodie, waardoor de kracht en de pakkendheid intact blijft. Dit wordt overigens afgewisseld met stoere, meerstemmige zangpartijen. Echte mannenmuziek dus dit Obtest. Voor mij in ieder geval een aangename verrassing en ik weet zeker dat veel liefhebbers van pagan- en folk metal best in hun nopjes zullen zijn met deze uitstekende release. [78 / 100]

Another new signing on the prestigious Osmose label. However, this is not exactly a new band. The group was established in 1992 and at that point in time they were playing raw black metal. Throughout the years their sound naturally evolved in a more folk/pagan approach. Recently Obtest released their fourth album 'Gyvybes Medis.' Compared to their previous releases, this one is yet a bit more accessible. The album is full of catchy pagan music with special attention for the melodies and refrains. The music is really diverse and the quality remains the entire album. Especially the songs 'Tree of life,' 'Children of the hawk' and 'The light' are very addictive. I can strongly recommend this album to any enthusiast of the pagan genre. Great album! [75 / 100]

Während die Band in heimischen Gefilden weiterhin über das für seine Qualität berühmte baltische Label Ledo Takas veröffentlicht, wird der europäische und sonstige internationale Markt nun über das renommierte französische Label Osmose bedient, was der Popularität der litauischen Metaller möglicherweise noch einen kleinen Schub verpassen könnte. Das wäre ihnen zu gönnen, haben sie doch spätestens seit dem Vorgängeralbum "Is Kartos I Karta" ihren sehr prägnanten eigenen Stil gefunden, der das regelmäßig verwendete Label "Pagan Metal" eigentlich nur der Texte wegen verdient hat, die sich vornehmlich mit Themen aus der vorchristlichen litauischen Mythologie befassen. Und vielleicht auch wegen der einen oder anderen folkig anmutenden Melodie, die jedoch nie zu sehr in den Vordergrund drängt.
Entsprechend nennt die Band selbst ihren Stil auch lieber "Heathen War Heavy Metal", was zwar komisch klingt, aber so falsch nicht ist, denn im Wesentlichen haben wir es bei OBTEST mit einer Gruppe zu tun, die auf sehr eigene und dynamische Weise Elemente aus Thrash Metal und traditionellem Heavy Metal verbindet und dazu mit Leadmelodien arbeitet, die mich - wie schon auf dem Vorgänger - noch immer des Öfteren an diejenigen eines Herrn Kasparek aus Hamburg erinnern, wobei Letzterer leider seit gut zehn Jahren nicht mehr so frisch und dynamisch aus der Hüfte kommt wie die Litauer. Gerade ein speediger und melodischer Hammer wie 'Sakalo Vaikai' zeigt das sehr gelungen.
Der Gesang Baalberiths geht als sehr raue Heavy-Metal-Stimme durch, die sich jedoch nicht in Growl-Bereiche verirrt und stets verständlich(in litauischer Sprache) die heidnischen Botschaften unter das Volk bringt. Die Gitarristen Enrikas und Evaldas brennen ein irrsinniges Feuerwerk ab, das vor effektiven Soli wie beim Titelstück und innovativen Leads, Licks und Riffs wie im Intro zu 'Ąžuolas' nur so strotzt. Auch der Abwechslungsreichtum innerhalb der Platte wurde gegenüber dem Vorgänger nochmals deutlich erhöht, so dass eine ziemlich mitreißende und dynamische Scheibe übrig bleibt, die Pagan Metaller ebenso ansprechen sollte wie Fans von RUNNING WILD, ARIA oder den schnellen Sachen von GRAVE DIGGER.

Since I heard the great "Is Kartos I Karta" in 2005, OBTEST has become one of my favorite pagan metal band. That's the reason why I was very excited to hear this new opus. Gyvybės Medis" (Tree of Life) isn't a revolution in the band's style. It contains the same kind of ingredients, that is excellent boosted heavy metal songs with lots of melodies, nervous and rough vocals, and a pagan/viking identity. The talent of these guys is the way they are able to create those pagan atmospheres without using folk instruments or even keyboards. Everything lays on the talent contained in each composition. The guitarist is absolutely impressive and delivers numerous beautiful leads and splendid melodies almost everywhere, giving to the band a very catchy personnality. Personnaly, I found this opus even better than the previous because it appears to be more varied than before. Maybe it's a subjective feeling of mine... but what's sure is that this album is a masterpiece. [6 / 6]

Suhteellisesta tuntemattomuudestaan huolimatta liettulainen Obtest on ehtinyt vääntää uraansa jo reilun puolentoista vuosikymmenen verran. Bändi on ehkä jopa ansaitsemattomasti jäänyt isompiensa jalkoihin, ainakin mitä tulee orkesterin omaleimaiseen musikaaliseen ilmeeseen ja pitkähköön uraan.
Gyvybės medis on järjestyksessään porukan neljäs studiotäyspitkä ja vieläpä varsin onnistunut sellainen. Pakanametalliksi bändi oikeastaan välttelee black metal -sävyistä leimaa yllättävän tehokkaasti yhdistäessään kappaleissaan runsaasti perinteistä hevimelodiaa ja reipassävyistä folkahtavuutta - nopeastakin temposta huolimatta.
Jos jotain vertailukohtia pitäisi heitellä ilmaan, niin lähimmäksi nousisi ehdottomasti naapurimaan oma Skyforger. Vaan selkeitä erojakin on ja näistä kenties merkittävimmät ovat perinteisen hevin kaavaa noudattavat kitaramelodiat. Näistä kun voi löytää viitteitä vaikka Therioniin tai Running Wildiin ja niitä yhdistämällä muuten bm-vivahteiseen pakanametalliin saadaan valmiiksi melkoisen mielenkiintoinen ja omalaatuinen sekoitus.
Parhaimmillaan levyn biisit ovat yksittäisten voimariffien ja melodioiden kohdalla, joista ei ole saatu kokonaisuutena aivan huippuhetkiensä luokkaa yrityksestä huolimatta. Plussan puolelle jäädään sen verran hyvin, että kaikkiaan levytystä voi pitää varsin malliikkaana tekeleenä. Oman osansa tähän toki kantavat myös selkeän kirkkaat ja yleisesti hyvät soundit, sekä puolikarhea karjuntaa ja rääkynää yhdistelevä laulanta.
Viimeistään tämän levyn myötä on syytä antaa Obtestille mahdollisuus, etenkin jos melodisempi pakanametalli on edes jollain tasolla sydäntä lähellä. Levy ei kenties ole mikään mestariteos tai pajan komein säilä, mutta se puolustaa paikkaansa omanlaisen voimailmaisun karsinassa puutteistaankin huolimatta. [7,5 / 10]

Auch im Baltikum gibt es eine wachsende Pagan-Metal-Szene. Eine der bekanntesten baltischen Pagan-Bands - in diesem Fall aus Litauen – nennt sich OBTEST und wurde 1992 gegründet, also relativ kurz, nachdem aus ihrem Heimatland ein selbstständiger Staat wurde. "Gyvybės Medis" ist der vierte Longplayer des Quintetts und wird von Osmose Productions veröffentlicht.
Dass die ehemaligen Sowjetrepubliken in Sachen Metal keine Entwicklungsländer mehr sind, beweisen inzwischen etliche Bands. Auch OBTEST können sich dazuzählen. Beeinflusst wurden sie ursprünglich von der skandinavischen Black-Metal-Szene. Anfangs war auch OBTESTs Stil mehr dem Black Metal zuzurechnen, doch mit zunehmender Band-Existenz entwickelten sie sich in die Richtung Pagan Black Metal. Sie selbst bezeichenen ihren Stil als Heathen War Metal, was natürlich nicht viel mehr als eine Fantasy-Wortschöpfung ist.
Die fünf Litauer geben sich auf "Gyvybės Medis" ziemlich professionell. Da ist nichts holprig oder unausgegoren. Für die Stilrichtung kommt der Sound fast ein bisschen zu glatt. Für traditionelle Instrumente haben OBTEST nichts übrig. Die episch-folkloristischen Anreicherungen, die natürlich auch auf diesem Album ein Bestandteil sind, werden alleine durch die Gitarren erzeugt.
Instrumental gibt es keinerlei Mängel, das starke Riffing muss ich sogar hervorheben. Auch der Gesang ist äußerst variabel. Es wird zwischen Growls, rauhem Clean-Gesang und epischen Chorpassagen gewechselt. Dabei wird ausschließlich auf die Landessprache zurückgegriffen, obwohl die Songtitel auch in englisch abgedruckt sind.
Die Songstruktur ist großteils sehr druckvoll. Vorantreibende Double-Bass-Attacken gehören zum Grundsound. Aufgelockert wird diese Dynamik dann durch die Gitarren-Virtuositäten mit folkloristischem Touch und durch die epischen Gesangspassagen.
"Gyvybės Medis" präsentiert sich als eine grundsolide Pagan-Black-Metal-Einheit, sodass die Nennung von Anspieltipps reine Zeitverschwendung wäre. Der geneigte Hörer führt sich das Album ohnehin von Anfang bis Ende zu Gemüte, und dann vielleicht gleich nochmal. Das geniale Intstrumental zum Abschluss lässt den Zeigefinger unwillkürlich in Richtung Replay zucken...
OBTEST liefern mit "Gyvybės Medis" ein starkes Pagan-Black-Metal-Album ab, dass sowohl im Lager der Pagan-Anhänger wie auch bei den Black-Puristen seine Anhänger finden wird. An die litauischen Lyrics gewöhnt man sich. Sie klingen auch nicht wundersamer als beispielsweise norwegisch. [6 / 7]

Für den “Baum des Lebens” – so die deutsche Übersetzung des litauischen Albumtitels „Gyvybes Medis“ – könnte ich prinzipiell meine Review zum Vorgänger „Is Kartos I Karta“ wiederholen. Denn auch wenn die Litauer mit dem Wechsel vom litauischen Ledo Takas zum französischen Osmose Label größentechnisch einen Schritt nach vorne gemacht haben und man nach dem Release von eben „Is Kartos…“ viel auf Tour war (u.a. als erste litauische Band auf dem „Heathen Crusade“ Festival in Minnesota oder gar einen Gig im Indianer Reservat in South Dakota gespielt hat), so hat sich musikalisch nicht viel verändert. Die Produktion – dieses Mal in den Hertz Studios in Polen erfolgt – mag etwas transparenter gelungen sein, aber der Heathen War Metal, der letztlich nichts anderes als Pagan Metal ist, schlägt noch in die gleiche Kerbe. Traditioneller Metal, gepaart mit schwarzmetallischem Liedgut und gewürzt mit folkigen Elementen mit dem man sich hinter der internationalen Konkurrenz nicht zu verstecken braucht. Dabei wird erneut darauf geachtet, dass das Klangbild nicht durch Tasteninstrumente versüßt wird, denn für den Transport der teilweise erstklassigen Melodien werden nur die Gitarren herangezogen. Der Gesang dazu – ganz in der Heimatsprache der Truppe – ist heiser-grimmig und wechselt zwischen Growls, rauem klaren Gesang und vereinzelten epischen Momenten. Zwar hat man gerade zu Beginn der Scheibe das Gefühl mit der englischen Sprache würde das Ganze flüssiger vonstatten gehen können, aber letztlich ist die Verwendung der Heimatsprache auch ein weiteres Alleinstellungsmerkmal. Obtest are a band I really should know a lot more about. I first started discovering the joys of Lithuanian Metal about a decade ago when I unearthed Ha Lela and Zpoan Vtenz, and I've discovered a few other bands from the area through the likes of Nailboard Records and Ledo Takas, but it seems Obtest have managed to have remained undetected by me, until now that is.
Opening number Apeigos, wasn't really what I was expecting, with the guitars in particular, sounding very melodic and clean. I was ready for a piece of unruly Pagan/Heathen Metal, and this was, despite its driving rhythm, quite catchy and melodic. Fear not, as the heads down and create hell, feel of Vedlys was exactly what I wanted to hear and I was immediately hooked by this rousing anthem. Things get heavier still on Šviesa and Obtest have already gained themselves a new fan. The title track is slower in pace until someone decides to make a break for it and the guitars once again let rip from a standing start. The lead guitars shine throughout the album, but they don't seem to dominate, in spite of their high profile. It's not just the guitars that warrant mentioning as I love everything about this album. Despite the very majestic Pagan nature of their sound, there is a huge melodic feel to every song, not in the Power Metal way that Ensiferum do things, but in a heavier, thrashier direction. The marriage of the styles fits perfectly, none more so than on the gloriously anthemic Sakalo Vaikai. And I think I'd better stop there as I'm fast running out of superlatives for this album.
Having been to the Paganfest gig in Dudley last week, I'd wager that Obtest would give any band on that bill a run for their money, this really is of the highest quality.

Ah, Lithuanian pagan metal! Don't you just love it. Obtest first appeared with a debut demo way back in 1994, and have been slowly plodding their way through the pagan metal underground ever since, singing in their native tongue of 'Vedlys', 'Sakalo Vaikai' and 'Geležinis Vilkas'. Yup, that 'Geležinis Vilkas'.
It's certainly interesting as they put their own spin on a sound rooted in Primordial. There is a good deal of excellent riffing going on, although it's a million miles away from their Black Metal roots. These days they're trading in a dark form of Folk Metal, although don't go thinking it's going to be the hey diddly diddly style of Korpiklaani. Nope, it's still hard and brutal round here.
Vocalist Baalberith is more of a shouter than anything else as he he bangs on about the tree of life (that's 'Gyvybes Medis' for all you Lithuanians out there), and the guitars sometimes end up a bit close to Iron Maiden for comefort, but that's a risk you run when you go for the twin axe approach undertaken by Messrs Evaldas and Enrikas.
An album that has a multitude of pleasure tucked away, it does take a couple of spins before things really hit you. Stick with it, it's worth it. [3,5 / 5]

Weg vom norwegischen Black Metal und hin zum Heidenstahl der NWOBHM!!!!
Endlich ist es mal wieder soweit – eine Heidenstahlplatte aus den osteuropäischen Gefilden! Vor allem Bands wie Trollech, Hromovlad, Arkona oder Negura Bunget haben es mir in den letzten Jahren angetan und die Ungarn von Sear Bliss verstanden es in naher Vergangenheit mich auf den Brettern zu berühren und hinter den Kulissen zum weinen zu bringen – vor lachen!
Nun hat mich vom französischen Laben Osmose Productions eine Band erreicht, die zuvor leider noch keinen Zugang zu meinem Gehör gefunden hat – OBTEST aus Litauen! Bei Litauen fangen selbstverständlich die Augen das Strahlen an, denn es ist immerhin auch das Ursprungsland meiner Freunde von Skyforger. Werden sie in eben dieser Liga spielen, oder müssen sie sich weiter unten einordnen?
Auf keinen Fall, denn die Mischung aus litauischer Sprache, rock´n rolligen Gitarren und folkigen Elementen besticht zu jeder Hörsekunde von „Gyvybės Medis“. Wer die Band jedoch schon seit einem längeren Zeitpunkt als ich verfolgt wird feststellen, dass dieses Album der nahtlose Nachfolger von „Is Kartos I Karta“ darstellt – vor allem auch inhaltlich! Symbolisiert wird dies durch den vom Leben durchzogenen, kraftvollen Baum auf dem Cover!
Vor allem die Melodieführung der einzelnen Songs ist grandios und trotz der Sprachbarrieren reißt es einem bei Refrains von Songs wie „Vedlys“ einfach bedingungslos mit, die heavy Gitarrensounds bringen ordentlich Schwung rein und die tiefe, kriegerisch-raue Stimme verbreitet trotz allem gute Laune und untermauert die Musik bärenstark. Ebenso werden traditionelle Akustikgitarren zum Einleiten verwendet, wie bei „Tai Ne Pabaiga’“ gehört. Das Drumming geht treibend voran, bestimmt des Öfteren das Tempo und man prescht auf wilden Präriepferden über die litauischen Hügel.
Die Balten sind abwechslungsreich, ideenreich und sprühen nur so vor Lebensfreude und genialen Rhythmen, sowie faszinierenden Melodien. Man ist gedanklich einfach sofort in dem osteuropäischen Land angekommen, taucht tief in die Musik ein und lässt sich von ihr lenken! Extrem ausdrucksstark und jeder Song eine Perle für sich!
Das OBTEST neben ihrem Heimatlabel Ledo Takas nun auch bei Osmose unterzeichnet haben, dürfte mit Sicherheit nicht die schlechteste Alternative gewesen sein, um der Welt ihre ganz eigenen, besonderen Paganklänge näher zu bringen.
Jeder der sich in dieser Musiksparte zu Hause fühlt, sollte diesen Litauen mal höchste Aufmerksamkeit schenken! Ich persönlich bin mehr als angetan von OBTEST! [9 / 10]

Now I’m all for giving the ethnically (and geographically) challenged metal-bands a fair shot but why does 90% of y’all suck? Then again, that goes for 90% of all the bands in US and mainland Europe as well… So what we got here are five merry minstrels from Lithuania (quick everyone, run to a map!) who propose to play “heathen war heavy metal”. Now, I don’t know about you guys but that’s just two increments less gay then Turisas’ “Battle metal” or Theatre of midnattsols nightwish within the sirenia temptation’s “ethereal gothic metal”. And it’s about as nondescript.
In reality Obtest sound like they wish they were Primordial and the entire Napalm-rosters lovechild, but instead end up as Rancor and the Stay-puft marshmallow man from “Ghostbusters” hideously deformed mutant offspring; both slimy and disgusting and still very fluffy and completely harmless. I don’t know about you but that’s not the image I want to have if I were to go into a heathen war wearing heavy metal. I’d probably just think about petting slimy-yet-harmless mutant babies and get a huge axe planted in my distracted skull in no time. The real problem with Obtest (except for the inherit gayness of all things folk/pagan/viking metal) is that there’s nothing to hang on to on “Gyvybes medis” unless you count the really-trying-too-hard vocals. The riffs are… there, the solos are sloppy and the rhythm section are… there, and sloppy.
I think the only interesting thing about Obtest is that they sing in their native Lithuanian which means that if you listen to this album 20 times you’ll probably get a good grasp of Lithuanian. Of course, there’s also a risk you’d start despising all things Lithuania and want to set the country on fire. Go ahead, Germany, Soviet and Poland (yay, you actually got to turn the invasion-tables!) already have, you wouldn’t be the first… [4 / 10]

Obtest kommen aus Litauen und sind seit 1992 aktiv. Litauische Texte sind angesagt, was die besondere Note darstellen könnte. Die Themen drehen sich um historisches und mythology, oft in Kombination mit persönlichen Eindruecken. Die Musik ist ziemlich weitläufig. Thrashige Riffs, Heavy Metal, Melodie, BM/Pagan machen die Band mit ihrer perfekten und professionellen Umsetzung zu mehr als irgendwen.Mehr als ok das Teil... achso und schweinemässig interessant noch dazu...weiss gar nicht so recht, was mich vom Highlight abhält... achja...die etwas lustig klingenden litauisch vorgetragen Texte... vielleicht? Avec la signature toute fraiche chez Osmose Productions, les Lithuaniens d’Obtest marque un grand pas en avant dans une carriere longue de 15 ans et parsemée de sorties d’albums, e.p. et autres démos avec une cadence presque métronomique!
Ce nouvel album donc, intitulé « Gyvybės Medis » (Arbre de vie), nous propose de plonger a travers ses 9 titres, dans un Pagan /Heavy Black Metal qui, je dois dire, m’a agréablement surpris! C’est avec une connaissance du style qui équivaut a un gamin de 9 ans essayant de réciter le nombre Pie, que je me jette sur ce skeud! Et oh surprise! C’est franchement du bon boulot que le groupe nous a pondu la!!
Est-ce l’effet des tournées et autres festivals de 2007 qui les auraient inspirés a ce point la? Car sur pratiquement toute la durée du cd l’on y trouve matiere a accrocher a cette musique faite de gros riffs accrocheurs avec une coloration plus proche d’un Heavy / Black que d’un Black Metal pur souche, et c’est tant mieux!! Flanquer de titres chanter exclusivement en Lithuaniens, Baalberith nous pond des lignes de chant tres intéressantes, malgré peut etre une voix un peu trop monocorde, mais qui additionné aux superbes mélodies qui ponctues cet album, vont indéniablement de pairs. Justement, la musique parlons en un peu : entres titres mi tempo Heavy Metal et blast Black, titres accrocheurs tel une cavalerie qui déferle sur la plaine morne, pour passer par la suite sur des ambiances plus sombres mais toujours emprunt d’une aura d’un autre temps a grands coups de riffs plus légers mais o combien ultra travaillé , la finesse des mélodies et (de vrai) solos sont assurément la marque de fabrique d’Obtest, spécialement sur l'instrumental "Ikaitai" et me font comprendre ce que la dénomination de « Pagan » veut dire: c’est un voyage dans le temps que l’on fait avec le groupe grace aux themes historiques et mythologiques évoqués ici meme!!
Donc, album qui tiens ses promesses, avec des musiciens talentueux et qui ont des idées a revendre, supporté par une production tres correct (Hertz Studio) je ne pouvais que mettre un 5/5 !
Tres bonne découverte pour moi que la musique de ce groupe Lithuanien et surtout de son univers dont je vous invite a les écouter, si cela n’était déja fait!! [5 / 5]

Sokkal inkabb komor es heroikus hangvetelu anyag ez, annak ellenere, hogy folkos temak is felutik benne kopasz kis kobakjukat. Nem egyszeru eset, az teny.
Affele pogany mocsari mutans, amelybol minden szinten hianyoznak a nepi hangszerek, ugyanakkor az enekdallamok – errol kesobb – es a gitarok egyes megoldasai megiscsak az osi tradiciokbol epitkezo dallammeneteket idezik. Egyaltalan nem konnyen emesztheto darab ez, es korantsem azert, mert ocskasag. Teljes mertekben zsigeri es osztonos – annak ellenere, hogy nagyszeruen felepitett – es emiatt jelentosen elter az atlagban megszokott nepzenes metaltol. Semmi mesterkeltseg, csak durr a kozepebe, aztan mindenki probalja meg osszerakni, hogy mirol van szo.

Kepzeljetek el valami minimalis dallammal atitatott torokhangu erolkodest, ami korulbelul konstans egyetlen hangon ordibalja vegig az egesz lemezt. Fincsi, mi? Nem, kifejezetten nem az, es ezt csak az olykor becsatlakozo csordavokalok oldjak fel: ekkor egyszerre tobb hangsavbol erkezik ez a rettenet. En alairom, hogy pogany, meg hogy csatakialtas, tudom, hogy meg szamtalan falvat nem gyujtottak fel, sot egyes asszonyok es kecskek meg nemi eroszaktol erintetlenul grasszalnak pajkosan a tavoli legelokon, de ennyire nem kell raijeszteni senkire. Ezek mellett pedig tokeletesen megfernek a himnikus refrenek, amelyek termeszetesen csataknak, illetve mindenfele termeszetbarat temaknak allitanak emleket. Kemeny sracok ezek, azt meg kell hagyni. Raadasul legalabb ugy kezdenek valamit ezzel a pogany/folkos megfejtessel, ahogyan masok nem nagyon – ez maximalisan oromteli es tamogatando. Sajat stilusuk van, mely egybol felismerheto, bar van mit csiszolni rajta.
Aki tehat befizet erre az albumra – es az emlitett stilusok kedveloinek halmozottan ajanlom – az szamitson arra, hogy nem lesz a letezo legkonnyebb feladat megkuzdeni vele. Vannak ertekei, nem is keves, de ne is remeljetek, hogy azok a felszinen vannak – egeszen mas szferakban gondolkoznak pogany cimboraink, mint azt barki is gondolna. Ha nem igy lenne, akkor ok lennenek a litvan Ensiferum, es kisgyermekek fulebe illo zenet jatszananak. Ok viszont az Obtest, akik a sajat utjukat jarjak, mely bar lehet, hogy rogos, megiscsak egyedul az ovek. Amit csinalnak, az becsulendo es ahogy csinaljak, az kirivoan egyedi. Chroniquer un groupe lituanien en ces pages n’est pas vraiment chose courante, avouons-le, encore plus quand le dit groupe chante dans sa langue maternelle. Obtest oeuvre dans le Pagan Black Metal et comme d’hab’ dans pareille aventure, le chant, c’est tout ou rien… Mais on y reviendra. Obtest existe depuis 1992 quand meme, a sorti 3 albums et plusieurs MCD sur un label lituano-bielorusse et cette signature internationale chez Osmose, qui se pose donc toujours la comme decouvreur de talents, vient donc recompenser plusieurs annees d’abnegation.
Cote musique, c’est du pur pagan black, tres entrainant au niveau des riffs, presentant de nombreux gimmicks melodiques mais Obtest, notamment sur certains choeurs, propose un style plus «exotique», on dira, ou on ressent des influences slaves certaines. C’est ce qui rend le groupe un peu unique a vrai dire car pour le reste, c’est du classique sauf que c’est tres bien execute, le tout sur fonds de blasts et de passages plus mid tempo. Les soli sont de tres bonne facture, carrement heavy metal dans l’ame et ajoutent encore un peu plus a un album qui presente vraiment des morceaux de bravoure, qui donnent envie de monter a cheval et d’aller tout defoncer a coups de hache! Seule faiblesse de cet album en ce qui nous concerne, bien que ce ne soit qu’une affaire de gout, c’est le chant beaucoup trop «guerrier», auquel il faudra vous habituer: on aurait aime plus d’agressivite, de noirceur et peut-etre moins de poils de torse coinces dans la cotte de maille, bien que ce soit un peu la regle du jeu en matiere de pagan!
Bref, on arrive un peu apres la tempete grace a Osmose qui nous permet de découvrir la un groupe pret a défricher de nouvelles et froides contrées meme si l’album est a réserver aux fans de pagan, qui trouveront la matiere a s’enthousiasmer… Du bon! [7 / 10]
